RE: Honda 2000i Carb Job With Photos Must Read!!!!!

For the record, my 2000I got difficult to start, then started surging on eco thottle. I didn't feel good about cleaning it myself so I took it to local authorized shop - quoted $85, two weeks later after the trip without it, picked it up - bill $185. Ran ragged - two months later now surging on eco and normal. Never again - letter to Honda to follow! Gonna run the seafoam first after cleaning up fuel, then she comes apart on my bench if not better. Want it done right - well you know!! Great little machine but one really must watch the clean/stale fuel issue. Thanks for great post !

RE: How to make a small septic tank.

NormK is correct, there is more to a septic system than just a tank in the ground with a hole in the bottom. You could be creating a significant biohazard that rain or ground water could deliver to your front door. Yes bears do it in the woods - which is just fine - the sun and wind will return it to nature, but putting it in a plastic drum in the ground is the most unnatural thing you can do. There are better solutions including a macerator pumping into a true system or a simple dry composting system for which you can find diy designs on the web. One last point, when you sell your property, most state laws will require the disclosure of any dry wells on the property. If discovered later you or your estate could wind up in litigation over it and in some states the fines are stiff. That sh&t can come back to haunt you!!

RE: Help from anyone who can think like a thief

Use a very large chain to attach the genset to a very large Doberman. Do not feed the Doberman until you leave NO. (just kidding and all you dobe fans - please don't write ..our dobe's wouldn't hurt a flea, on the other hand our Poodle will take your head off if you mess with anything he considers his!) Stop at the local "rent all" and let the insurance guys deal with it.

RE: BANG

I usually drive 5 to 10 mph below the limit so anyone who wants around .. can, gives me a little more time to react too. If I see a close merge coming and i can not clear left quickly, I'm immediately on the horn and flashing lights - so they have time to hang up the phone ... before we collide! Those who force me to accelerate ... get what they deserve ... thick black diesel ... she needs blowing out every now and again anyway! You cannot fix stupid!! Merge is an oxymoron ... unfortunately means to join together! Glad no one was hurt ... the coach can be fixed! Yes I get a lot of NY salutes ... just take it as an indication of their IQ, wave and smile and keep on truckin!

RE: Do you leave your space heater ON over night?

We leave our electric "oil filled" on over night all the time just to help with condensation and to knock the chill off. I think it's the safest option. The propane is so noisy no one can sleep with it cycling. We also have a couple of electric blankets when it gets really cold.

RE: Cobra Inverter

Don't waste your money! Do the math ... 50 watts is almost useless. Losses in the inverter will eat up anything your solar panels produce. Out the 100 bucks towards a little honda genset. You will be much happier.

RE: Need recommendations for camping resorts open during winter

There are a number of state and local parks open in VA and NC along the coast - not crowded.

RE: Occasional water pump turn-ons?

You likely have a leak - its a must find - water and wood to not mix! Could be the pump check valve - easy enough to isolate. If you have a selector valve to select city water vs local (tank) just put it on city and turn the pump on -see if it cycles. (check you plumbing diagram they don't all work the same) If you don't have cut off valves on everything now will be a good time to add them! In the mean time turn the pump off until you find it to prevent water damage.

RE: Modern travel trailers that will not break the bank?

There is no such thing as a cheap, modern, well built TT. There are many examples of expensive, poorly designed and built TT's! Every design is a trade off of cost, quality, and application. My Avion is one of the best built 5th on the road (mho), but it weighs tons (literally) and cost a young fortune when new. There is only one truism - the minute you drive off the lot with your prize in tow - you will meet a new design you will like better!!

RE: Locking up brakes on ice

I made the mistake of driving over the mountains from the coast into Portland at night in what was light rain at sea level - a snow storm above 3000 ft. Two lane, winding mountain road with few guard rails. At close to 8 tons of rig, the "pucker factor" was off the charts. The wheels never broke into a slide - but at 5 mph, the 25 mi trip took all night - pity the poor soul who was behind me. My advice --- stay out of icing conditions with your TT ... AT ALL COST ... there is noting more dangerous. The only solution is to park it. Or maybe - put your head between your knees, press gently on the back of your neck ... and kiss your "trailer" goodbye!

RE: Running A Generator Question?

First, I don't consider Walmart boon docking - first sign of civilization according to my daughter - urban decay ... if you ask me! I don't like to sleep with the genset running ... carbon monoxide is ordorless and tasteless but will help you sleep - forever! Even a good genset installation could put co in the rig after bouncing down the road all day! And when its cold outside, closing up ... can be a death trap! I have a Honda Portable that I use when DW wants to use the hair dryer! Other than that we run off the batteries. The Honda is very quiet so running it in the econo mode to charge the batteries is no louder than the water heater burners! Run it as needed ... but don't forget its pumping out pollution every minutes its running ... be very very careful.

RE: Billowing rubber roof

If air is getting under it, so can the rain .... the rotten roof structure will get his attention sooner or later!

RE: Tool Box in Bed While towing 5th wheel

I picked up a couple of heavy black plastic tool boxes at Lowes that fit like saddle bags - even with the top of bed rails - in the bed just behind the back doors. I can get it them with the rig on the hitch. lockable and look good after 6 years in the sun. Big enough for all the hand tools you can carry. Stay with the truck when we leave camp site. <$50 each.

RE: Cleaning front cap

I carry a 6 ft step ladder to reach the top of the cap - in the bed if necessary. The real trick is to get the bugs off before they dry. I like to wipe down the cap, front grill, plastic headlights, hood and fender edges with Meguiars quick detail while DW puts on some soup. The anti static wipes work - as does a tennis ball on a broom handle. Yearly - I use Poliglow (http://www.poliglow-int.com) products to seal the fiberglass and keep it shining (follow instructions to the letter!). The bugs don't stick as bad with the poliglow coating. On new fiberglass the Meguiars is enough to seal it and keep it slick as glass after 7 or 8 cleanings - and your headlight lens will last 2x. the ladder comes in handy to clean off the slides too!

RE: Charging question

Scout, GFI'S decay with age ... and get sensitive to leakage. Your trailer frame is a big capacitor against the ground and will some times trip even brand new GFIs. Talk to an electrician, likely eliminate the GFI. There are some code issues to address but a good electrician will know how to set it up. Common problem when you plug into a standard household 30 amp circuit.

RE: Rest Stops

My experience - rest stops are good for 6 to 8 hours unmolested. But Frankly "rest Area" is an oxymoron. Trucks coming and going will wake up the dead! Walmart the same way. Smaller city parks (some with advertised camping) are usually pretty good quickie stops -

RE: Charging an Uneven System

Unmatched multi cell batteries in both parallel and series configurations can be difficult to optimize and manage. It is possible for "circulating currents" or "pumping" to set up and discharge the batteries or cause them to mysteriously over heat. While many folks get away with similar set ups, unless you have only a few very high current devices requiring all those batteries, splitting up the batteries to power individual 12 vdc loops and charging them thru a good isolator will likely improve over all performance. (battery life, charging loads, reliability etc.) If you go solar, you will likely have to do something like that anyway. I have reduced the load in my 5th wheel substantially by going to LED lighting and high efficiency entertainment systems. Two big 6 volts in series work just fine. http://www.victronenergy.com/battery-isolators-and-combiners/argo-diode-battery-isolators/

RE: How many batteries do I need?

Get some 12 VDC LED party lights and get ride of the inverter. Adding batteries is not as simple as you might think. I have two large Trojan 6 volts in series (to make it easy to charge them). All my internal & external lights are LED's and we can run for a week without firing up the genset.
