RE: Border Changes Coming

Works fine for me...New Hampshire has no sales tax and I shop there regularly when I am passing by. Wines are 50% cheaper down there too than in QC.:)

RE: Driving around the Gaspe Peninsula

The Rt. 132, like Jack said, is not wide. One place where you can park and sleep free with plenty of space is at Pointe-au-Père, just east of Rimouski at the lighthouse. There is a Maritime Museum there and a landed submarine, Onandaga. There are signs on the 132 roadside. However if you are on the A-20 which by passes Rimouski ad takes you to Mont-Joli where you will have to go down onthe 132 anyway, take the exit at St-Anaclet for P-à-P. There should be indications ATTENTION: This is a locally known secret...When you leave Trois-Pistoles heading east the next town is St-Simon. The speed limit is 50 km/hr.....DON'T do 60!Better'n that..do 50.

RE: Ontario hwy410 to Quebec AutoRoute20 to New Brunswick Route2

BTW, at those W-Ms I mentioned by the bridge and in Lévis, you can unhook and go into town. If that is on your agenda then go to Lévis. From there you can drive down to the ferry, park and take the boat across and you'll be in the area of the Château Frontenac. There is a dumping station in St-David, Route des Îles the next exit after 318 at St-Jean-Chrysostome, just as you exit at the light right in front of you across the road. That exit is next to the Ultramar Refinery. If you are not taking the 20-East and prefer the 132..send me a PM.

RE: Ontario hwy410 to Quebec AutoRoute20 to New Brunswick Route2

Hi, Québec freebies...Ifyou're coming in on the south shore via the A-20,after you pass the Chaudière River, (big waterfalls on the right), exit on ''Rue du Sault'' turn right, left at the next light, there is a W-M there. Coming in from the 40, cross the Laporte Bridge take the same exit, Rue du Sault. At Lévis (watch the photo radars there on Kennedy Blvd)there is a W-M on the left There is the Transit CG, exit at ''Route Allemande'', turn left at the stop sign, it is a few km from there onthe left. At St-Jean-Port-Joli there is a truck stop. W-M at Rivière-du-Loup but my favourite is at the lighthouse at Pointe-au-Père, just east of Rimouski. Take the P-A-P exit. Really a great place. If you take the 185 from Rivière-du-Loup, there is a W-M in Edmundston, NB. There are CGs around Cabano. Then you can stay also at the Regent Mall in Fredericton, NB too and there are two W-M in Moncton. As for French here....my tip: Do not take for granted that the person with whom you are speaking speaks English. ''Pardon, do you speak English?'' is a door opener. Merci, bonjour are good ones too. Most everyone here speaks English, but it is nice to be asked first. Bon voyage.... Gas up before crossing over to Québec! (That's an order LOL).

RE: madeleine island

LK, T'wouldn't be big deal, but if yiu type in Magdelan Islands + YouTube, you'll find quite a few. Gas on I.M. is about a dime a litre higher than in Souris .. or it was when I was there. OK for the pics..j

RE: madeleine island

Gaetan, You won't be disappointed! What I did was to reserve on the 1:00AM boat, that way you'll make Cap-aux-Meules early and have the whole day to set up etc. After the boat before that leaves, you can line up on the pier. On the way back I took the 8:00PM boat and arrived in Souris ~ 1:00AM ,and spent the night at the tourist office or you could turn tight off of the pier and stay in the arena parking lot. Camped out at Barachois, neat cg. Sometimes folks will divide their stay and spend half there and the other half at the Havre Aubert cg. Neat place for bikes too. Even neater palce to eat! The Factory is one good place as is the bakery in Cap-aux-Meules. there is a micro brasserie there which pushes I.M. beers (they can be bought here in Québec City at the Marché du Vieux Port). The best time, IMO is August as the water is warmer and the weather is nice. Lots to see and do and hang out too. Le Pied du Vent, cheese factory, the smoke house, clam digging, beaches are cool, les Dunes du Sud in particular. A week there is not too long. BUY GAS BEFORE CROSSING! $$$ there If you're not into boondocking, right near there a bit on from Souris is a Provincial Park...(LK, what's the name of that, Red Pines?) Let me know if you want pics or more info. If you want it en français, send me a PM

RE: Places to Visit in the Fall

Kay-Zee, thanx for the pics, That park seems like a real nice place. Have never been to Ontario on a camping trip, looks like a neat detour to spend a few days. Here is one from Grand Manan N.B. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9QfZqTmmgk

RE: Places to Visit in the Fall

Hey LK... That one trail there in Bellechasse County is ~80km long with not many climbs because it is built on old RR beds, hence no more than 4%. Nex summer this trail will be connected tothe main trail in Lévis, which also goes to Québec City. What is neat is that along these trails there are stops, some with tables, blue plastic rest rooms sans mirrors and occasionally a hot dog stand or restaurant nearby and unless noted by a sign, we can overnight there. Some places have a sign which reads, No parking between midnight and 7:00AM, BETWEEN DEC 15 to MAR. 15, meaning outside of those dates, no problems. If you are wary, you can always stretch out a length of chain and a bowl of water, which lets people know that you have a dog or you can do like I, a sign in the windshield, ''Forget the Dog, Beware of the Wife'' .....................

Excellent post. Know the area fairly well, but not the trail........Shoot, guess I'll just have to return when the leaves are in colour.

RE: New Quebec Road Signs Popping Up

At least bike trails do not go under many bridges Actually we have great dirt roads up here. Maybe we need a new tourist draw, something like, ''Boondocking is best where the roads are not paved'' ''Dirt roads always go somewhere'' Or maybe a booklet on how to cross Québec on dirt. ''Snow is like a good shoe shine, it hides a multitude of sins. See Québec in the winter!''

RE: New Quebec Road Signs Popping Up

This is so politically uncorrect that it is a HOOT! Did you forward it to Sam? Wonder if they will make snow tires a year round thing...so as to get through the débris.

RE: Montreal and Quebec

Ok....thought about it. If you have bicycles, set yout GPS up for Champlain Boulevard and go out towards the bridges, park there, it is free parking too. There are literally hundreds of kilometers of paved bike trails around here. Down there on the river there is a loop you can do which takes you to the ferry landing, below the Château, and then cross the river and tur nright on that trail which will take you to the bridge. It is ~ 42 km ride. This you could do the day before leaving for the Peninsula, the ncross the river to St-Romuald next to the Hwy 20 and spend the night in the W-M there and leave out the next morning. Being a local, I rarely use the Hwy 20 when heading down east, I use the 132, but pick it up at the Beaumont Exit, 337 I think. You'll see a sign for Massif du Sud, St-Damien and Beaumont, take the exit and turn left and go on down to the end. It's a great ride that way as there is nothing to see on the 20 anyway. If you have the time, you might even make it to Gaspé within a week LOL. What our problem is here is that ....well not to be pretentious in any way at all, but the 138 on the North Shore is as beautiful, if not more than the 132, and from St-Siméon you can take the ferry to Rivière-du-Loup, which is about a two hour drive on the 20 from the Québec Bridge. Highly suggested...as you go into Baie-st-Paul, atthe bottom of the hill, take a right and at the light in front of the church, turn right and take the 362 (I think) towards l'Île-aux-Coudres and Les Éboulements. If you reach St-Irenée in late afternoon, go reserve a supper at the Flacatoune at the beach there. You won't regret. The138 comes out at La Malbaie and at the bridge turn right and head on. A picnic at Port-au-Persil will need your camera. Back to the South Shore.....sorry about the detour. At Rimouski-Est, as you leave you'll see a stop light, St-anaclet totheright, Pointe-au-Père to the left on Rue Père Nouvelle. Let me tell you, from St-Michel-de-Bellechasse on down the coast, sunsets are remarkable and the Rimouski area is in the heart of it. Stay on the old road through Ste-Luce-sur-Mer and on to Ste-Flavie...Check out Capitaine Homard for good eats, but a local secret, across the road from Capt. Homard is a little stand that sells out of the world lobster rolls. That 132 is a beauty of a ride. Luckily, if you are in a hurry, the 20 ends east of Rivière-du-Loup and you will get to see some good stuff anyway, but definitely not as much. Probably the best way to see the peninsula is to do the trip in second gear. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxSrp39AEPE

RE: Montreal and Quebec

Mexicokid....... Free overnights at the Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse at P-a-P just east or Rimouski. At the marina in Rimouski-Est you cna use the laundry and showers Also the marina at l'Anse-à-Valleau, a small park, free overnights at St-Ulric, 15 km west of Matane, really neat place, on grass, picnic tables and legal. l'Anse-à-Beau-Fils 9 km west of Perçe in the w marina there next to the white building across from the marina. Laundry & showers and a cool bar. Nice campground, Beaubassin, at Bonaventure.
