RE: Picture posting thread...anyone into it?

Thanks for the compliment Barbara. Here's a shot of the power plant there at Calaveras Lake. CPS built the dam so they could have lake water in order to cool the generators and motors(and whatever):

RE: Picture posting thread...anyone into it?

Calaveras Lake (San Antonio) is loaded with 2 & 3 lb channel catfish. We like to eat them, so my wife catches them.
I go after the double-digit redfish (there's a few of here as well):

I was expecting something better. Sure, she's always looked good, but now she's a tad too old for today's routine. And, the voices were weak.

RE: Camping Too Much Trouble?.......How Sad

I agree. It's a whole lot easier to sit on the couch and run the remote controller.
Yes, RVing takes a lot of time, and a lot of money. Sure, you could spend this time/money on other acttivities which might produce some profit.
Yes, bass fishing is a lot of trouble, and takes time and money.
Auto racing, and recreational flying,.....there's no comparison in time and money spent.
At my age, I suppose I could go into 'regret mode'. But, I don't feel like doing that. Perhaps, if you could explain what life is all about I might change my mind.

RE: Do you suppose that RV manufactures...

Reading the forums takes a lot of TIME,....I should know. TIME is MONEY.
I certainly don't expect any manufacturer to pay someone to read the RV forums.
I know I wouldn't.
They listen to nobody. THEY are the deciders, THEY are the experts.
The manufcturers ALREADY where all the cut corners exist. Heck, they're the ones who are there, every day. They're the ones who decided which corners to cut.
I decided a long time ago that "very good quality" DOES exist. I just can't afford it.

RE: Was not aware that RV factory workers paid piecemeal v. hourly

At the Newmar factory, I found out some interesting facts regarding how the "Amish" play into the construction of Newmar products. They are just human beings. Some of them very good at what they do, some of them,....not so much. Some of them are not "allowed" to stop production in order to "do it right". And, they have to always hurry, and do the work as instructed.
Newmars methods of running their business has allowed them to stay in business, while still making a profit.
When I left there with my new special-ordered Dutch Star, I recall wishing that I could afford a Newell. I have never been able to buy "the best of the best". Therefore, I'm still fixing stuff that the factory should've done better. If there had been a better deal, I would've gone for it. But, there wasn't (I did a lot of research). I just had to buy a nice big(full of desirable features) diesel pusher, it was on my bucket list.

RE: General Motors issue

We've owned lots of Cadillacs. We even owned several of the good ones, from "back in the day". The one we had previous to our current SRX, they replaced the engine(under warranty). I took it in for a slight tappet noise, on first start-up. Later, the self-leveling suspension system went on the blink. It would cost more than the car was worth to fix it.
This SRX has suspension that is too stiff, and I knew about it prior to buying it. BUT, my wife insisted on buying it (for her). If the computer systems go out, I guess I'll have to park it 'cause I'm sure it'll be out of warranty.
I love my GMC Envoy.
Why did you let them go ahead with the expensive shock absorber job? I'm curious to know what were the symptoms.

RE: Lets start a positive topic!

I'm a senior citizen, BUT it's so GREAT to be in good-enough health to allow me to keep working on my motorhome. AND, my friend owns a RV park right on the Colorado River(TX), and he welcomes me to plug into 50 amp box next to his house. He has a bassboat and launch ramp that I can use. I can also use one of his new Ford pickups. NOW, THAT'S affordable RVing.

RE: Thinking About Calling It Quits

One of the reasons we quit fulltiming is because we discovered that the way WE were doing it was going to run us out of money. It was too boring to hang out at the RV parks, so we ended up doing expensive touristy stuff everywhere we went. The total expense rose to an alarming amount, and we were NOT getting THAT much in return. So, our exit plan was the answer. Now, from a central TX base, contolling the amount of time and money in our RVing activities, is easy to manage. Much of time is taken up on our affordable hobbies, which require the space and features of a house and yard. Most of our motorhome trips are short. In fact, we're down to only two long trips per year. This is fine with me 'cause I really enjoy fishing the nearby lakes. I went yesterday, and going again tomorrow.

RE: I like to dream

So far, it appears that I'm a bigger dreamer than all of you put together.
My dreams start at about $200 MILLION(net). Then, I wake up.
I got up early this morning,....to do something I can afford,.......go fishing.

RE: End of fulltimming

I can assure you, if either my wife or myself had been forced to go kicking and screaming back to a brick house it would NOT have happened (not for both of us). The fact is that BOTH of us, after sampling the fulltiming lifestyle, agreed that there were way too many features about living in a brick house that we preferred over living in a tiny house on wheels. Motorhomes were basically designed for mobility (take your little house with you), and it works GREAT for that. But, for us, spending one week in the motorhome is close to the limit of what we want to do with it. Consequently, it sits in the backyard most of the time. We're more the city dweller type, but we're happy to have experienced more than one lifestyle. We love RVing (short term). We have hobbies which are better served from a homebase with ample space, much more than what was available to us when fulltiming. We're grateful that we had a choice.
But, we have friends who are still fulltiming. Living the lifestyle that suits you, that's what's important.

RE: Walmart in Wilston, ND - Oil Field Parking

Sounds like a bunch of honest people enduring the elements in order to have a decent-paying job. It'd be too cold for me up there, I would go to south Texas oil patch. It ain't easy, nowhere.

RE: Is your Dash A/C enough in the summer while driving?

If it's above 94F outside, and driving towards the sun, I run the genset and both roof airs. It burns about 3/4 gal of diesel per hour, but it's worth it.

RE: Rolex Daytona 24 Hour Race

I normally don't watch, except that I saw where 'the Dinger' was running up front. So, I'm watching the race now, with a couple of hours to go. It sure looks like it'll get exciting at the end.
GO DINGER!

RE: RV Show today....Where is the creativity and innovation?

There are many of us who do NOT like the way everything has to 'change'. If it's not broken, DON'T mess with it!
"Change" is very expensive, and the worst part is that EVERYONE has to pay for it, even those of us who did not want the 'change'.
Sure, I understand improvements. For example, Newmar improved their Dutch Star significantly from 1999 to 2003 (I was on top of it). But, I can tell you that the 2003 needed a few more improvements, which IMO they were able to accomplish in the 2004 and 2005 models. But, the cost of manufacturing also increased significantly. They could've frozen the design in 2005, and still have a very good product. But, we know it doesn't work that way. The market demands "change". But, perhaps the manufacturers have "run the gamut" on innovations. The "Amercain way" is screwed up, in many ways. There's nothing we can do about it, so DEAL WITH IT!
