RE: Weight estimation before purchase

Hey Flapper, I don't have a fifth wheel and tow vehicle yet. I just cannot seem to pull the switch and retire. I like working too much. But, I own heavy trucks. If I build a truck with a 58,000 pound GVWR and load it to 58,000 pounds, it is not fun to drive. Legal, yes, safe, probably. Joy to drive? Hell no. Another truck I built to 83,000 pound GVWR and it legally can weigh up to 64,000 pounds (bridge law, another topic). Driving that truck is a cinch. Rides great, more power, much more powerful brakes - and the maintenance is a lot less since I am not working it so hard. And I do not tire so quickly driving it.
When my wife finally convinces me to retire, I expect to order a 5500 series Dodge cab and chassis, put on a Highway Products Outlaw fifth wheel body, and a full time rated 36 foot RV. I know I will be overbuilding, but it should be a joy to drive, and with a greater margin of safety.
My two cents.

RE: Cat Mechanic says to buy Cummins (!)

I have owned many heavy trucks with Cats, Cummins, and Detroits. They all have worked out well. Don't worry about the motor, look at the rest of the coach. The motor will outlast the box.

RE: Bears in Hyder?

I get daily emails from a photographer friend. Mira and her cub are seen almost daily, sometimes for a couple hours, and put on quite a show. The star of the last several years, Monica, has not been seen this year and we are worried. Her female cub from three years ago, Catchup (as always trying to catch up to her brothers) had a cub of her own and has been spotted. Dog Bear and Jaws have been spotted, and wolves are sometimes seen as well. Several black bears hanging around as well. As of yesterday the Bear River had overflowed highway 37a but was still passable. Mosquitoes not as bad now as they were a month ago. The road through Hyder is very rough, out to the observatory. Lots of mining activity. They are supposedly going to pave the road next year but I sure hope not.

Al, wow, I am so sorry. Puts my problems, which we PM'ed about, in perspective. I just talked to my wife and we will not give up on our dream. Time is short no matter how much time we have. Our thoughts and prayers, my friend.
