RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

One of those rigs at Whitsett is Bob & Nancy Woods, who are just coming off a gate and getting ready to leave for the summer. They plan on returning the end of August, as they realize in this economy a winter job must start early, if you want one. Several of the folks that jumped ship to what they thought was a better company and more money, have come back here, looking for their job back. Welcome Chaos Agent and hopefully you will be on a gate soon. If you are still waiting, stop out and see us, just south of Three Rivers. Thanks for the invite. We'll see how it goes.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Noticed 4 RV's in Whitsett today, just not sure if they are leaving for the summer or starting a gig. Is anyone doing a job in Poth for Hunt on the Bar None ranch? have a good one We're one of the 4 rigs at Whitsett. We got here last Thursday and there was already 4 rigs here. We had to park over at the side for a couple of days with just 50 amps. On Sunday one rig left for a gate and we moved to the full hookup area. Then yesterday two more rigs headed out, leaving only us and another rig, who I think is just parking here. I've never seen a vehicle or anybody around. Today, Tuesday, we drove down to Corpus to finish up our paperwork and take our test. When we got home, there were two rigs parked beside us. Then later in the afternoon, another rig came in and parked over at the side like we did originally. Supposedly we'll have a gate in the next couple of days.

RE: Possible Causes of Coolant in Oil on ISC 350 - Updated

Thanks to everyone for all the great info. Pretty sure there has been no overheating. The coolant temp was running its standard 175 degrees right up until the engine quit. Here's hoping for something cheap, though cheap is usually relative working on a diesel.

Possible Causes of Coolant in Oil on ISC 350 - Updated

Coming into Las Cruces yesterday, my Cummins 350 ISC quit like it was out of fuel, with no Check Engine light. After being towed in to the shop last night, they found coolant in the engine oil this morning. Everything was fine 1800 miles ago when I had all filters and fluids changed. Also have seen no problems or funny readings on my Siverleaf. Service Manager said it could not-too-bad to really bad. Anyone have any ideas on what the possible causes could be? Thanks for any help. StuckInLasCruces -------------------------------------------------------- UPDATED 3/27 Well, we know a little more after today. They removed the oil pan and found about two quarts of coolant in the oil. They then over-pressurized the cooling system and except for a couple of very small external leaks around hose connections, no coolant showed up anywhere. The Tech even joked he wondered if someone just poured coolant in the oil. He also said they found no sign of oil in the coolant. So whatever's leaking is only going in one direction. So tomorrow they're going to put the pan back on, fill it with oil, get it running, and see what happens. Anyone have any other ideas?

RE: What model residential refrigerator replaces Norcold 1200

This is a great thread. My Norcold is still working, although I just had the front circuit board replaced, as it would shut down periodically without notice. If I have any further problems I plan to go to a residential frig. I certainly will not purchase a Norcold product again. Can't say much for Dometic, which was in my last MH. Never could get the door seal replaced properly, and the company was never any help. Anyone know what refrigerator Fleetwood is using in their high-end all electric coaches? That might be a place to start.

RE: Two Questions about Gate Guarding

We have been gate guards with GGS since December and we are really enjoying it. Sometimes you will be very busy... other times you will be pretty slow. We have been at our current location for almost three months and the last month has been pretty slow. It is picking up sporadically now. I just went to visit our grandkids for a week and Bob did the gate since we had no night traffic. Now that I'm back we have night traffic, not much but enough to warrant two shifts again. I enjoy being up at night so it's no big deal... just don't see Bob much. One of us is asleep much of the time, or getting ready to take over. The drilling company has supplied us with a light plant (I love it) and drinking water for the whole three months. GGS supplies us with and maintains the generator, sewer, 550 gals of water and diesel for the gen set. I like their sewer set up, we never need a pump out and I do laundry every day! Thanks for the great info. It's always interesting to see how people are handling this job.

RE: Two Questions about Gate Guarding

I guess I am the lone wolf when it comes to drinking the company furnished water, always have since we started in 2007 and always will. We have 3 filters on our coach that the water passes through before it gets to the drinking stage and IMO, that is clean enough for me....:B..Right now, all of the companies are starting to hurt for gate guards as the winter Texans are leaving and they still have the same gates to cover. You will have no problem starting with any company now. If you have time to get the stuff to you and back to the office, then that is the way to go, if not, just show up and they will get you done and working just the same. GGS test everyday, some companies test on a set schedule and you may end up waiting till the next test day with them. Thanks for the info. We'll probably start out with GGS and go from there. We expect to be in Whitsett on the 28th and give it a go.Click on the "where the wheels are stopped" in my signature and when you get to Whitsett, come on down and visit our gate. We're just about 20 miles from the yard, south of Three Rivers. Thanks. We'll look you up when we get to the area.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Yesterday about 6PM driving along the back road of our ranch I found this guy sleeping in the sun. Our company man that reads the pressures called his friend a game warden out of Laredo and he said they have had several reports of black cats north of Laredo. He also said they have 19 radio collard cougars between Freer and Cotulla. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u189/smithster_photos/blackcat.jpg height=250 width=450 Are sure this cat didn't escaped from a zoo or wildlife park somewhere? According to Texas Parks & Wildlife, there are no black cougars in Texas and never have been. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/wild/species/mlion/ Plus with the rounded ears that looks more like black leopard. Cougars have sharp, pointy ears.

Two Questions about Gate Guarding

My wife and I would like to start Gate Guarding in the next several weeks as soon as we get back to Texas. (Presently we're in Tucson) Question one is what is the best way to start? I've seen some posts where couples showed up cold at Whitsett and a few days later were on a gate. I've seen other posts where people received packets from GGS and sent in stuff ahead of time. So what's the best way to go? Question two concerns the supplied water. Does this tank have its own pumping system, or do you just use it to fill your coach tank? Also it sounds like some people don't drink from the tank, but use bottled water. Is this necessary? Thanks for any info.

RE: State of Residency

To the OP: Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) is your friend. Find a place that rents mailboxes AND is a CMRA (likea UPS Store). Only the post office has P.O. Boxes. A P.O. Box doesn't have a physical street address, but a PMB does have a physical street address. Since a physical address for a domicile, a private mailbox can be used as the domicile for fulltimers. The USPS refers to them as "private mail boxes" (PMB). The CMRA will provide you with USPS forms to fill out. USPS FAQ for CMRAs I chose a package shipping store in Aberdeen because it's close to where I RV and they only charge $144/year for a box that has 24 hour access - which means I can check my mail in person on my schedule. CMRAs are all over the country. Even GoodSam is a CMRA (if you want your domicile to be Florida). I stayed in WA because I did not want to pay the expense of re-registering, re-titling, re-insuring the MH and toad in another state. It is my understanding that it order to be considered a resident in most states one must at the very least: - establish a domicile at a physical address - register to vote - get a local library card This is what I did: 1) rented a mailbox 2) changed on cell phone bill, credit card, etc. selected option to receive paper billing 3) Once a bill was received at my PMB (with my new address) I took it to the Dept of Licensing - I changed my drivers license, MH and toad addresses to the PMB - for free. I paid the $10 for a new drivers license (instead of the free address change sticker). The DOL clerk said the computer system didn't like "9999 Main St PMB xxx" so she changed it to "9999 Main St # xxx" after I told her that it was a private mailbox and that the USPS says that the # and "PMB" can be used iterchangeably. She used the # sign. I took a new picture and was issued a new license. She also registered me to vote. Apparently the DOL in WA can do that. I went to the public library and got a library card using my new address. Now I'm a resident of Aberdeen. I've since voted in a special election. Don't think a library card has anything to do with it ... at least not in South Dakota. 1. While still in Texas, registered my rig and toad in South Dakota. They sent the tags to me in Texas. 2. Got to SD within 90 days and got our DL's in Sturgis. 3. Five months later, coming back from Alaska and passing thru SD, registered to vote and got CCW with no problems. 4. That was 2008 and no problems since.

RE: Time for tires, Firestone or Sumitomo? Update

FWIW, I've got 48,000 miles and 4 years on a set of Sumitomos. Still plenty of tread and no cracking.

RE: Winegard Satellite Antenna

I've had one since last July and it's worked very well for me, and we've used it as far west as Seattle, as far north as North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, and as far south as Houston. About a week ago I did have to put a new 12 volt plug on the end of the power cable, but other than that, it's worked great.

RE: Fuse location for Generator Slide Out Pump Motor?

No clue for your rig. My high current fuse was mounted just above the pump. I now know more that I want about a leaking pump. What's your situation? I was remounting the IN/OUT switch and it slipped and shorted the 12 volts feeding it. But to follow up, after I posted this, I found the fuse in the drop-down panel above the generator. It's an in-line fuseholder that was hidden behind a wire bundle.

Fuse location for Generator Slide Out Pump Motor?

I've got a '99 American Eagle NS and I'm looking for the location of the fuse that feeds the hydraulic pump motor for the Generator Slide Out. Any one have any idea before American Coach Support opens on Monday? Thanks.

RE: Best ERS in Alaska, Yukon & B.C.

I had Good Sam ERS in 2008 and was towed twice for short distances in Canada and had no problems. One thing to remember Good Sam, Coach-Net, AAA, etc., do not have their own towing services around the country. In most areas of the US there are dispatching services that coordinate with the ERS companies. They all pull from the same pool of wreckers. As far as Canada and Alaska, once you're out of the few big towns, there may be only one wrecker for several humdred miles anyway, so it won't make any difference who you have.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Do not go to Corpus, go to the Whitsett yard at exit #83 off I-37. There are FHU sites for the gate guards and they can get your paper work started, plus get your prints done before you drive down to corpus for the final paper work. That way Jamie will know you are there ready to work and in line for a position from the time you get there. Yes, they are still hiring and I doubt you will set in the yard more than a few days waiting for a gate. Do we need to call ahead, or can we just show up out of the blue?

RE: Let Me Know if You Have Allison Transmission Fluid Questions

Thanks for your advice and help here on the forum, hzjcm8. I had my Allison 4 speed back flushed and filled with Transyd at 136,000 miles back in '07 at a bus repair shop that was just getting into RV's. They used a big fancy machine and told me they flushed it until the fluid was the right color, 3-4 times if I remember. At that time they told me there was no need to replace the tranni filters as the back flush would clean them like new. Is that true? At 142K miles, I developed a hydraulic leak in the boondocks of Canada. I had a couple quarts of Transyd that I used up along with a couple pints of ATF stop leak I bought as I limped several hundred miles to Prince George. Also added regular ATF as needed along the way (small stores don't usually carry transyd). Had a leaking hose replaced and the tranni topped off with more transyd. The mechanic told me it was OK to mix the standard ATF, Stop Leak, and the Transyd but I would like to hear that from you. Should I have it re-flushed, or is it OK with those other fluids in there? Thanks! Just a question. Was this a 'hydraulic' leak or a transmission leak. In most cases, there's a difference. Hmm. I'm not a mechanic but it was tranni fluid leaking from a hose near the back & under the engine (but not FROM the engine). Three or four feet from the tranni. I think the hose was attached to the rad cooler. I let the mechanic take care of it and he had a devil of a time getting the bad hose out of there because of frozen connections. The only fluid I was loosing on the trip was tranni fluid...which I kept topping off. It was at the beginning a slow drip I could see under the rear of the RV, just a small 2-3" diameter puddle after each time we stopped (every 4 hours or so). Sorry. The reason I was asking is that my rig has 3 different hydraulic systems besides the transmission, two of them back in the engine area. I have the hydraulic system for the power steering and ISC 350's radiator fan. It uses AW32 clear hydraulic fluid. I also have the hydraulic resevoir for the PowerGear levelers. It uses ATF. And up in front I have the resevoir for the hydraulic system that extends and retracts the Onan Generator. Had a friend that saw leaking hydraulic fluid and was almost sold a tranny rebuild before he figured out it was his levelers.
