The 6.0 lives on

And at it's Powerstroke power levels, hitched up to a 6-speed Allison.

RE: F-250 Truck with 5.4L gas engine

We have literally hundreds of F-350 Crew cab 4x4 long bed trucks powered by the 5.4 engine, from 2004 onward. They are equipped with snow plows in the winter and tow 27 foot box trailers set up to carry landscaping equipment in the summer, usually weighed down quite heavily. These trucks are utterly reliable. They may not be climbing big hills at 70mph but then again they are fine for our needs. They will be replaced as they hit time/mileage life limits with F-350 6.2 gas engine trucks.

RE: Ford owns it's logo again!

Boy, now there is a dream. Competition in the rv market from Japan and Germany. Among other things, Flex-n-snap Lippert frames would be a long gone memory, stapled construction, luan and thin fiberglass panel sidewalls history. On and on. A RV built with the engineering and quality of a Camry, Accord or Civic. Ford is churning out some great products, I am so looking forward to the completely new SuperDutys.

RE: HPFP ??

That seems to be quite the problem on Fords.
I am trying to track down a suspect now --- and the simpler solution may be to just replace the whole lot.
What?????? Are you trying to say?

RE: HPFP ??

Coming from an actual owner of a Job 1 2008 6.4PSD powered Ford truck. A common problem with job1 6.4PSD and the only time my truck quit running. Chaffed wiring harness on the high pressure fuel pump. Here is an article that discusses it: http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/articles/article-07-09.php. My truck did not fail to crank over but the batteries were quickly depleted after only one or two cranks. If your batteries are factory originals they may have little reserve cranking power. My local Ford technicians was able to pull the turbos and HPFP without raising the cab. I had the truck back in two days, also with two gallons of fresh coolant installed. You can check the mentioned fuse to pinpoint if indeed the chaffed harness could be a factor.

RE: Thinking of downgrading

Depreciation will kill any anticipated savings. My diesel slurping paid for F-450 sits in the garage, saved for it's towing/hauling ability. Honda Civic (actual 38mpg highway) is my grocery getter/commuter car. Pay the truck off, with maintenance it will last you for years.

RE: Help me narrow down from 3 choices...

While certainly not glamorous or easy to park in some lots, nothing else can carry and tow a big load like a 350/3500 series full size van. Room to spare, strong drivetrain. The big vans(not those overloaded 1500/150 conversion vans) will handle an internal load and still have carrying capacity for a pretty decent size trailer.

RE: Buying a 2011 or 2012 ford F250 Gasser - advice?

I have to laugh when I hear people complain that their gas engine is "screaming" while climbing up a hill. Sterndrive gasoline engines in boats are almost all GM supplied, ancient 5.0, 5.7, 6.2, 8.1's. They spin at 4,000++ RPM's happily, WOT on my 350MAG is close to 5,000RPM. WHile I don't keep it there for long, it is probably about the same length as if I was climbing a hill in a truck. Nothing breaks, nothing falls apart. But... it is getting about 4mpg if I am lucky.

RE: Fiat to Offer Lifestyle Truck

Nice, but I think for it to be successful here it will have to be able to carry four adults. Thinking along the lines of the Subaru Baja. I read that Subaru made a error shutting down the Baja production line. Sales of the little pickup were increasing but they had contracted with Toyota to build Camrys at that factory.

RE: Transmission oil change

On your model Torqueshift, I just drove the truck until I knew the fluid was warm. Park on level surface, drain the sump using the drain plug, remove the pan, clean it out, check the magnet for debris, clean it. Reinstall the pan reusing the original gasket, carefully torque the fastners. Crawl up under the right side of the radiator, locate the filter bowl sitting next to the radiator. Use a air impact wrench to "blip" the filter bowl loose, remove it, drain it out, replace the filter (looks like a tightly wound roll of TP), install new O-ring, lightly lube it with clean tranny fluid and reinstall (Do not overtorque the bowl). Now refill through the dipstick. I think the Torqueshift refills with 8 quarts of Mercon SP or LV. I drain and refill about every 20-30k miles. On the 2003-2007 I would change that little TP roll filter every oil change (5k miles) it is simple and cheap. I too, am not a fan of the flushers. Seeing how the flushers are handled, how many vehicles are hooked up to them, how many different fluid types are used, too great a chance for contamination.

RE: first tow - 2005 F250 Powerstroke impressions

I bought a 2004 F-250 diesel and it was great, sold it for good money and ordered a 2008 F-450 6.4 diesel. Both have been great trucks, 6.0 had a wiring harness chaff and the 6.4 had a radiator replaced. I am diligent with scheduled maintenance (bit of a hobby), don't drive like a damn fool, very happy with my selection. Next truck I buy will more than likely be a Ford.

I think this is the first time I have read of a failure of the torqueshift transmission (either the 5R110 or the 6R140) in normal service.

RE: Help with new truck.

I don't know about KBB guestimations on prices but that sounds way over priced to me. A 5.3 and 3.42 axles sounds like more a grocery getter than a towing vehicle, especially with the 4-speed. Like another poster, I think you could do far better than that deal, few bucks more you could buy a brand new truck. Especially if you are looking at financing, probably better off with what credit unions are offering for new car financing.

RE: F250 vs F350

How much does your fully loaded trailer weigh? Are you exceeding the Gross Combined Weight Rating of your truck with the trailer hitched up? $5000.00? Mighty nice of your dealer, ha. Five grand sure will buy a lot of fuel even now. The F-250 and F-350 in same configuration(wheelbase, cab size, etc..) are not that much different. Big difference is going from Single rear wheel to Dual rear wheels, that is where a big gain in axle carrying capacity and stability come in.

RE: High Idle on 6.4 PSD

Here is the SVE Bulletin that covers this subject from Ford. I hooked up both the 1200 RPM idle for PTO operation and the 900 RPM idle for battery charging back in 2007. Took all of 30 minutes to complete, nice on a cold day.

Also here are a few pictures looking up under the dash at the wires needed. A good light source is handy to find the wires that are bundled up.

RE: New Guy

You may grow to wish that rv's were built as good as boats, depending on what brand of boat you have. 7 year warranty? On what part? frame? I have found that an rv needs much more TLC than a boat, if you do not want your rv sitting for weeks at the dealer waiting repairs you will need to be a jack of all trades. I enjoy rv'ing, great to get away, but still not near as a fun as taking the boat out on the bay for a nice cruise. Just wish I was in one of those states where I could tow both the boat and camper behind my truck, a perfect world.

RE: Chrysler's earnings quadruple

One of my co-workers showed up today in his new Challenger. Not sure what trim but it has the hemi with 6 speed, 3.92 gears, leather interior, dark blue. with some kind of lowering kit from the factory. While I think the Challenger is a bit bloated compared to the Pony car competition, this is one great looking, tire smoking beast. Maybe not what the majority of car buyers want but I sure am glad that it is available, much like the others. I think Chrysler will be around for a long time. I think there is a real awareness now of the importance of buying American made products(or at least what people think an American product is). This new car joins his two other Challengers, a 68 and 72 model year cars.

Am I crazy, or....

Is this a very poorly researched story?
http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2012/04/we-drive-an-f-250-bi-fuel-cng-trubodiesel.html
Am I really off questioning a CNG conversion of a "diesel" engine? Could this instead actually be a 6.2 "gas" engine with a CNG conversion kit? I see not 6.7 badges on the doors, no twin tip exhaust pipe, and looking under the hood no dual batteries. Pickuptruck.com has really taken a nose dive since Mike Levine left but to get the story this wrong? We have CNG powered vehicles at work, even Cummins CNG, but they have spark ignition and are CNG only. Hmmm
