Our new Motorhome

We just got home from picking up our new 2012 Tiffin Pheaton after spending a week trying things out. WOW, how nice it is! BIG change from our 2006 Fleetwood Southwind gasser. Only one minor problem and it was taken care of after a call to Tiffin. We traveled 600 miles and so far things are great! Hope they stay that way!:)

RE: tire gauges

Stick gauges can give faulty readings depending on their quality and how they are kept. I bought a digital gauge for about $50. at NAPA. Supposed to be accurate to +or - 1 lb. I only check the tires in the morning when cold. If I check them in the afternoon there will be a 5 lb difference between the sunny side and the shady side!

RE: Going from gas to diesel

"Diesel engines have a power to RPM curve that goes up quickly, then levels off, and then drops. Ideally, you try to keep the engine in that level area. On my coach, the ideal RPM is between 1500 and 2000 RPM. So, I try to keep the engine in that range and let the Allison change gears to match the speed I want. Most of the time, the engine and transmission work together without having to manually change gears." Don't know how to put the box around this like others do...... OK....my stupid question of the day.....how do you keep the RPM where you need it? Gas pedal? Not sure I follow how to let the engine and transmission work and keep the "sweet spot" RPM. Again, sorry for the stupid question. First question: simply hit the quote button above the person you are quoting. This will put their message in yours with a box around it. You are cutting and pasting which is not necessary. Second question: As your engine begins to struggle, usually going uphill, the power curve drops, (rpm drops)...you then need to increase those rpms back into your sweet spot. You can either press the accelerator, which usually doesn't work very well, or downshift. Learning how to downshift your tranny to achieve the desired rpms is a learning curve you develop over time. Some engines have high torque/hp and the allison does the shifting for you. For instance, my Dynasty had the Cummins B 300HP engine. Pretty gutless. I had to manually shift the tranny to keep the engine purring. With the Executive and it's ISM 525 HP Cummins the Allison automatically shifts for me and I rarely have to manually do it. Each coach is different and only by practice can you learn how to find and keep that sweet spot so your engine is working at optimal performance.. Finally, never apologize for asking a question. There are no stupid questions..some answers on the other hand, well......:B:B...Dennis Nicely said, Dennis. I too am following this thread and learning, we trade in our gasser on Monday for a 2012 Tiffin Phaeton!!:B

RE: Anyone to report on the tampa RV show?

We went on opening day, hurt so bad can't walk today!:) We traded our Fleetwood Southwind gasser in on a new 2012 Tiffin Phaeton the day BEFORE the show! We've been contacting and visiting North Trail RV since last year and stopped in there on the way to the show. They made us a great deal on a new rig on their lot. The salesman (Gater) was great as was the owner and the financial guy that puts the deal together. I've applied lots of Ben Gay to sore legs, planning on going back to the show today and look at goodies for our new rig!

RE: slide will not close

When this happened to me I put a jack under the outside of the slide, used a piece of 2x6x 2' long to spread out the weight, jacked the slide up just a bit to help the motor get the slide "over the hump" and it worked. Even though your rack and slide parts look clean they should still be lubricated with slide spray. I did this and have not had this problem again. And yes, mine acted like it was a weak motor. That was two years ago! Still have the same motor!

RE: slide will not close

I've had the same problem with my electric slides. Twice each year I make sure the slide rails and gears, (rack and pinion) are clean, than I use slide spray to keep them lubed,,,no more problems.

RE: 8.1 Workhorse - what brands came with NON-rubber roofs?

Our 2006 Fleetwood Southwind has a TPO Roof.

RE: Tampa RV Show

I am planning to attend... A good bit of the show is outdoors so those attending might want to shoot for a non rain day:) Traffic can get congested in the morning. Also depending on when you get there it can be a bit of a hike from where you park to the entrance. As was already mentioned I am thinking that the entrance fee is good for two days. Johnny We hope to see you there! We are going Wednesday and Thursday, Figure the crowds won't be to bad. Not sure where we are staying yet.

Tampa RV Show

The Tampa RV Show is coming up, Jan 11. We really look forward to this show, some say it's the largest in the country. Anyone going? We are looking real hard at trading in on a Tiffin 40' Phaeton. We've had great times in our Fleetwood Southwind, and it's been a great motorhome for us, and there is nothing wrong with it,, but it's time to move up,,,,I think...not sure,,,guess I'll figure it out at the show, depends on trade in value of our unit.

RE: Florida SunPass

We have the removable transponders, one in the motorhome and one in the car. Our transponders came with a special bag that we put the car transponder in when towing the car. The bag prevents being double charged.

RE: (Me again) LP usage with furnace???

When I was in 10F for a week I was also concerned about my water heater. To me it seems that the water tank is exposed to outside air just by the fact that the combustion chamber is exposed. I wouild make sure the water was at least warm all the time. I actually got a ticket for going across something in Baltimore. Apparently I was passing a truck when there was a sign prohibiting propane and when I stopped to pay the toll they had a category for me and then after I paid the police pulled me over. The cop was pretty dumb. He misspelled my name, put me in the wrong state, and even transposed the license numbers. I never did pay that and they never came after me. Some of the tunnels would not allow propane tanks on RVs to go through them, I think you just need to turn your propane off now, not sure but I would check into it.

RE: backup camera

I would run the cable underneath the coach staying away from exhaust pipe of course!

RE: Starter Won't Engage

Is it doing anything when you try to start it,,Like spinning, or clicking, any noise at all?? Start with the easy things first, check your battery cables, take them off, make sure they are clean. Check all connections, batteries and connections at starter. (remove battery ground cables before you check starter connections. I just replaced the starter on my 2006 8.1 vortec. It has only 25,000 but the starter started acting up. It's about $175.00 at NAPPA, easy to install yourself. Hope this helps

RE: Easy in Easy out fuel without GPS

I consider GPS to be a "tool" that makes RVing easier. No, it won't find easy in and out gas stations, and it won't do everything for you, and sometimes it is wrong! You still have to use your brain!!! It's just another tool to make traveling a little easier, an aid to navigation, and I wouldn't be without one in my travels. I can remember my father complaining about automatic transmissions when they came out,,,,"They want to make it so anyone can drive, well hell,,,pretty soon all you will have to do is just sit there and steer, the damn car will just go by itself!"

RE: Easy in Easy out fuel without GPS

If I may make a suggestion,,,get a Garmon GPS. They are an invaluable tool when traveling. They are so easy to use, so much information, the nearest gas stations, truck stops, hospitals, police, shopping, etc.

RE: car dolly eating tires

Think of it as an isosceles triangle, if the hitch is not square to the back of the motorhome, the sides of the triangle will not be equal. It will have the same effect as having one side of the axle closer to the hitch, therefore wearing out one side of a tire more than the other. It will cause tire scrubbing, all too often this condition exists and is diagnosed as an alignment problem of the trailer, when in actual reality it was a poorly installed hitch. That is why it is important for hitches to be centered and square to the rig it is being installed on. When I was in business, we were just down the street from a UHAUL center, corrected many improperly installed hitches. The customers main complaints was the fact that the trailer did not appear to be tracking straight while towing and that the tire(s) were wearing off one side or the other. The trailer (dolly) is going to track directly in back of the hitch ball - no matter where you mount it. If the hitch is offset to one side or the other, the trailer is going to track to one side the same amount. If taken to the extreme, guessing the offset might cause some wierdness as far as tow vehicle handling - but the trailer isn't going to care one bit. The triangle to be concerned with would be formed by the coupler, and it's distance to each tire. If those didn't match, THEN you'd have issues. That is absolutely correct!
