RE: Pics of new rims and tires!

Yes and no. Google Hunter Road Force balancing equipment. CT51

RE: Before I buy a TT, can I tow it with . . .

On the subject of weight, you don't have to take any water if you're not dry camping. My trailer has the water tank slightly behind the rear axle, and I don't want to do anything to reduce tongue weight, or add weight while towing. If you have to use the toilet while traveling, leave a one gallon jug of water in the bathroom, and just pour it in with whatever else you put in there. Water is the heaviest thing you carry, and the easiest to do without. My trailer ready to go is only 300lbs heavier than the dry weight on the yellow sticker. CT51

RE: Pics of new rims and tires!

That wheel on the right looks like it has a large amount of balance weights on it. Makes me think the wheel balance machine did not have load force capability. On my new Puma 25RL, I swapped the factory tires with new Maxxi's. On the Hunter balancing machine with road force capability, every tire was improved markedly, cutting needed weights by half on most, and to none on one tire. CT51

RE: Well we went and did it..

I had a 2009 RAM 1500 with a hemi, and when I got a bigger trailer, I traded it for a 2011 2500 Crew Cab hemi. I don't have any evidence of it, but I can't help but think you're better off without all that additional complexity just for a tiny improvment in mileage. It still takes the same amount of horsepower to go a given speed, and you still have the frictional losses of all eight cylinders, so all the deactivation gains is the reduction of pumping losses on four cylinders, and maybe the frictional loss of four sets of valves. To me, the smoothness and consistency of power in the 2500 is noticeable. CT51

RE: Well we went and did it..

The new RAM 2500's with Hemi's do not have cylinder deactivation-only 1500's have it. Just go to the website, click on either vehicle, then "powertrain", then "specs". Horsepower and torque are different also. And, the new six speed transmissions are different as well. CT51

RE: Dometic T-Stat AC Control Question

I have that thermostat. The A/C fan will run all the time unless you select "Auto" at the fan setting. This is in the owners manual. Push the "fan" button, then press the + or - until you get "auto". (there are only three choices-low, high, auto). On the auto mode for fan, the fan will turn off with the compressor, and will not run with the furnace. CT51

RE: Best way to lift a trailer for bigger tires?

Before I did all that work, I would measure the diameter of your existing tires, and compare that to the 16" tires you want. Two more inches of clearance, as you want, would equate to 4 more inches of tire diameter, which is unlikely. Also, verify what your axle rating is. If it is 4,400 instead of 5,200, you can easily change the springs (also, they are very inexpensive). This won't change the axle rating, but the stiffer spring will deflect less giving more clearance. Possibly changing the springs might be all you need to do, and that is the easiest thing to do. CT51

RE: How tall is my coachmen travel trailer?

It's probably about 11' to 11'6", but if you're going to build a garage for it I would make it 14'. You or the next owner might have a 5th wheel or a DP MH in the future and they are usually over 13'. I have a garage for my TT, but I originally built it for a MH. Garage door opening is 14'. After the MH, I bought a 5th wheel that was 13'4". Even with 8" clearance, it looked mighty close backing it in. CT51

RE: Suburban 2500 and Montana Mountaineer 30PRS

JBarca, When I had a 30' Puma, the actual tongue weight was 1,190 lbs. However, after hooking up the trailer to the tow vehicle, the tow vehicles weight only went up 977 lbs, indicating that 213 lbs of the tongue weight was transferred to the trailers axles by the hitch. I would expect similar results for the OP, which would provide a little more leeway. CT51

RE: Gas engine revs ?

The average boat owner thinks nothing of running his 5.7 or 8.1 powered stern drive or inboard at 4-5000 RPM's for hours at a time. This is just like pulling a trailer up a mountain for several hours. CT51

RE: Puma 20QB

Just took delivery of my second Puma-25RS. It's a 2012 with the new Nutmeg interior, and wood plank linolium. I have had zero issues with this one or the 2011 it replaced. The Puma's are similar to all the other Forest River stick and tin trailers, but I feel the interiors are the best looking of all of them (and the exterior graphics! who could not like the Puma Cubs on the front)? Looked at the 20QB both times, but just liked the big back window and permanent bed of the 25RS. The 20QB does have a high tongue weight for a 20 footer, which is one reason it tows so well. No issue for a 1/2 ton pickup. CT51

RE: 1 link or 2 that is the question

If you lower the hitch height and do not change the angle, you will get a very small additional amount of weight distribution due to the fact that the tongue is pointing a little more down at the hitch, but the WD bar's angle has not changed. It will probably be something like adding 1/4 inch more distance from tongue to bar. It may tow somewhat better though, just having the front lower instead of higher. After thinking about it, it sounds like lower the hitch one hole, and leaving the angle the same, and staying with 1 link might be just right. CT51

RE: WC OK ?

You're going to have most replies saying you should use the WD. I would take it for a tow. If the trailer is not noticeably affected by wind gusts and passing trucks, and the ride is reasonably smooth, I think you're better off without WD. I towed a 26RLS Laredo, similar size and weight with an F350 Crew Cab. It was one of the best towing rigs I've ever had-just hook up and go. No hitch noise, and no worry about traversing steep dips or odd angles that can put tremendous stress on a WD system. The one thing I made sure of was that the hitch shank was the shortest available so there was no undue stress applied to the hitch. CT51

RE: Trailer repair

Beautiful... skilled labor and shop charges of $110.00 per hour...:S I wouldn't let that place touch my trailer... Back them out and replace them with a little shorter stainless through bolts and nuts with washers. I agree. There's no way I would want this dealership touching my RV for any reason. When I put an awning on my daughter's horse trailer, I used stainless bolts, washers, and acorn nuts on the inside. Of course, this was because the entire inside of the trailer is aluminum finished, and the nuts look normal there. Since you now have the holes in your inside walls, I don't think the acorn nuts will look any worse than attempting to match the wall finish, and at least you will know for sure that you have the strongest attachment possible. Just do one bolt at a time. It will only take you a few minutes, and this problem will be behind you. CT

RE: Do the 2011 trucks ride better

I have a 2011 RAM 2500 Crew Cab Laramie 2WD with the Hemi. People who ride in my truck say it is the quietest, best riding truck they have ever been in. Two things that contribute to this are, one,it is 2WD, so it has independent front suspension, and two, RAM's have a "light load" setting for the TPMS that allows you to run 45PSI front and rear when unloaded. 2500 2WD RAMs also come standard with Michelin LTX tires, which add to the ride and quiet. If you don't have to have 4WD, take one for a test drive for yourself and see. CT51

RE: Should Trailer tires be set cold at less than max press?

I bought one of the hand held digital thermometers from Harbor Freight. It is a fact that the more air you have in your tires, the less the temperature (and pressure) will increase as you drive. It's not the pressure that blows tires out, it's the heat that comes from the flexing of the tire every revolution. I have a boat trailer with load range C tires that is a little over capacity. I run these tires at 55 PSI (which is 5 over max sidewall). At this pressure, they run cool and have never given trouble. At 50 PSI, they will continue to get hotter and hotter as I drive. These themometers are down in the $30 range now. I would never tow a trailer without one after using it. I pull over after the first 50 miles or so, and aim at the hubs to check for bearing problems, then the tire. Obviously, you aim at the exact same spot on each wheel and tire, from the same distance. You will quickly know if a problem is developing. CT51

RE: Which Tow Vehicle - Need your help fast.

Happy for you that you made a good choice. A few years ago I bought a Montana 3465-similar weight to yours. Ordered a new 2008 F-350 SRW Crew Cab V10 with 4.3 rear end. The trailer weights were below all the F350 capacities, but it still felt like the trailer was crushing the truck. Plus, on the slightest hills it would downshift to 4th, on a little bigger hill, it would downshift to 3rd, and turn 4,000 RPM. Now I really dislike diesels, so the cure for me wasn't a bigger truck, but a smaller trailer. But if you want that size trailer, the DRW and diesel is the only way to go. BTW, the Montana was a fabulous trailer. I spent many nights in it out in the RV barn just because it was so nice. Recliner chairs, big screen TV, fireplace, king bed etc. Hope you enjoy yours. CT51

RE: 1st bad thing I can say about my new Ram

When I ordered my 2011 RAM 2500 I did not order the towing mirrors, because I thought they were standard. On the RAM website where you can spec your vehicle, it showed the towing mirrors as: $0. What it actually meant was that towing mirrors were a no cost option. (not true on a 1500, only a Heavy Duty). So, the truck came in with the standard mirrors (Chrome, with turn signals and puddle lights, since it's a Laramie). I was crushed, since it was my fault. (dealer ordered exactly from the spec sheet I handed them). The dealer just ordered the correct mirrors (regular part, no VIN required), and installed them. They cost over $500.00, but the dealer ate the cost as goodwill to me. Everything works the same, installation was just remove door panels, three bolts and harness connector, and reinstall new mirrors. I see that your mirrors are all black, without turn signal markers. Is your truck an ST? Just imagine your truck came with the mirrors, and you knocked one off. They are definitely available at a price. CT51

RE: Electric Tounge Jack

The prices are so close that it's always a better idea to order a 3,500lb jack, which will be 2 1/4 diameter. Plus, you can transfer it to your next trailer if you upgrade. CT51
