RE: over heated & Broke down, update now in Flagstaff

I hope you find a way as I would not recommend a scoot on 89. Be safe and check out Flagstaff.

RE: over heated & Broke down, update now in Flagstaff

Wiz,
Good thought above about seeing some of the area. We enjoyed the parks and Indian ruins just N of town on 89. Take the loop starting with Sunset Crater. Also try the Flagstaff Brewery.
I'm just suggesting that you take some time off from your troubles. You guys deserve it.

RE: Can I Add A 2nd Battery and/or LP Tank?

I have a friend with 4 batteries right in front of the house and propane in front of that. Looks like you could do the same. Refabricate the spare as required or move it to the rear for better weight distribution.

RE: over heated & Broke down, update now in Flagstaff

Could this be something not so bad like a broken timing chain? There would be compression on some cylinders. But may not explain the cooling tank leak or black smoke.

What is wrong with the engine? Do they know are just recommending a replacement?
Glad to hear about your new plans.

RE: over heated & Broke down, update now in Flagstaff

For those of you who have experienced a small crack in the expansion tank, JB Weld is a good fix. But, you have to use the long drying stuff and let it sit overnight to cure correctly. Will last forever.....Dennis
Hope the Wizard gets some "good" news today.....DI to wish them some "good" news. Since the engine won't start the problem is a little more than a simple leak.

RE: Bone Head Move of the Day

BTW There is a recent thread of someone with a brand new rig plugging their 120V brand new rig in 240V plug on their own pole. Ouch!

RE: Bone Head Move of the Day

OP,
One very hot day with our new rig in Arizona a sawed off tree stump jumped up and wacked the side of the rig when I couldn't wait for the DW to help.
For the next 4 days while in the very hot Arizona desert the temperature inside the rig was ice cold. Did I say it was 110 degrees outside?
Take care.
PS In 2004 that was $1600 of repairs.

RE: I Don't Think I Am Thick...

Be aware that running household appliances on an inverter can place a heavy drain on a battery. An 8A 120V AC coffee pot for example would cause a draw of about 88A from the 12V batteries.
Many rigs are better suited for lighter loads like watching a TV for a few hours.

RE: I Don't Think I Am Thick...

Can I run things like our coffee maker while we are in motion? Yes, however the safety aspects of hot water and a vehicle in motion should be considered.
Do all household items like laptops, hair blowers etc work off all outlets?Yes when on shore power or a generator. An inverter may only power some plugs. It all depends upon how your rig is wired.
We have a cigarette lighter outlet by our dining table. I assume that's what you mentioned for charging cells etc when there is no shore line. Yes, just like your car it can be used to charger or power various devices like a cell phone, rechargeable flashlight, etc.

RE: Parallel or Series Solar?

I was between the 600w & 800w Morningstar controllers and decided on the 800w. In hindsight I think I could have saved the $110 and gone with the smaller controller for my 675w panels. Understandably (I think) there is not a lot of information on what happens when mfg specs are exceeded. Although it's not hard to imagine that the warranty would be void.
You may be right that the smaller controller would have served you well especially in warmer areas. But one cold morning in the mountains could have a different result???

RE: accidentally plugged in 240v to 120v camper....Help!!!

The old 3 wire 240V dryer plug is not physically compatible with the 30A RV plug. It's similar and could maybe be forced.
OP, Any equipment that was turned on is likely toast. What about the converter? It's likely toast as well. Do you have electric HW? Repairs (replacement boards) might be possible.
"Turned on" includes standby, clocks, remotes, etc.

RE: Need Advice on Generator

Are you really going to charge 2 non deep cycle 12V 235AH batteries at 80A? That is a lot - have you every charged at that rate?
Is the PF 0.7 for that charger? My charger is 0.95.
On my last rig the default bulk charge was 80A for 4 GCs (464AH) - these are deep cycle batteries. Occassionally when on the gen I would kick it up to 100A, the max.
Find a way to measure the AC draw, ammeter, kill a watt, etc. Deeply discharge those batteries and see what you get. And if by any chance you would exceed the gen spec can you just scale back the bulk charge a bit?

Call Cummins, perhaps there is some reset procedure. Maybe disconnect the engine battery cable for a few minutes???

RE: over heated & Broke down, update now in Flagstaff

I'd be tempted to patch the tank, fill with water just to determine the engine status. I'm not suggesting highway driving.

Consider a metal replacement tank if available. Hopefully the engine is OK.
