RE: Fifth Wheels

Does he want a bed cap? That would be the biggest deal breaker. The hitch thing is a non-issue to me but it all depends on how he want to use his truck. I take my hitch out whenever necessary and have a smooth bed and I can also fit a lot of camping stuff around it when the hitch and 5er are on. Craig

RE: Lube on Lug Studs

I replaced a lot of messed up lug bolt when I had a repair garage, in the LH lugnut days. I lube mine, they pull done better. I put on new wheels last year, made a 250 mile trip and checked the tq and none of them budged. Craig

RE: 5th Wheel Tripod Stabalizers?

Yeh, there's slop between the landing gear tubes. If there wasn't... JT's wouldn't be necessary either. I had the idea of building something like the JT's long before they were on the market. I hesitated cuz I knew that some day I would forget to loosen the pinch screws before running the landing gear... get the picture! I imagined being hundreds of miles from home with bent landing gear that I couldn't retract. The JT's form a triangle(s) and so does a tripod. If a triangle isn't solid enough, something else is wrong! The tripod that doesn't make sense to me is the one with the vertical adjusting screw at the top. Here you go and make the strongest geometric figure there is (the triangle) and then put a flexible member on top of it. Craig

RE: Which shocks?

About 15 yrs ago and before I knew there were rv shock kits, I used front end P/U gas magnums. I went to a Checker and looked thru their catalog til I found the P/U shocks that were short enough to work. They had a stud at the top and cross-tee at the bottom. I also needed an eye so I hacksawed off one end of the tee so I could pull the rest of it out... then I had an eye. The rv 555001s are puny and not even half the shock that those full size P/U shocks were but they will still make a big difference if you don't have any. By hook or by crook, it's worth putting them on but I won't use the tiny rv shocks again. Craig

RE: Full hookup at home

My bro does his that way. I buried mine cuz it has to cross under the 5er to get to the septic. I also put in water and enough future pipes for elec. and satelite. I will complete everything next winter. Craig

RE: 5th Wheel Tripod Stabalizers?

I found a OSHA tripod in a scrap pile. It's for pulling a person out of a manhole. It has alum. telescoping legs and I built a new head to encircle the pin so the legs butt up against the plate. It's rated 5k lbs so I put nearly all the front weight on the tripod and just enough on the front gear to stabilize those corners. The bottom of each leg has a hook for a chain to adjust the leg angle and spread. It's rock solid. It would be a breeze to build something similar. Craig

RE: Air Conditioning

I clean my cond. coil often. The dirt builds up on the inside surface where it can't be seen w/o taking the cover off. I had a 5er that was 2 yrs old and didn't use the AC much. I thought there was no way it could be very dirty but it was actually pretty bad. We camped in eastern Co. at 108 degrees and the compressor was cycling on the internal protection. I had to run the fan on high and block off some return air to reduce the load to get thru the weekend. Craig

RE: Traded Trucks

Early or late 05? Auto or manual? Early 05 had NV5600 6 spd (~400lb cast iron case trans). Late 05 had aluminum G56 6spd and dual mass clutch that a lot of people swear at. Some 05s (maybe all of them) had plastic intercooler tanks. I don't think they are a problem unless the fuel and boost are turned up. I'm an old trucker. The 2 stroke DDs ran like a streak empty and died when loaded. The Cummins ran OK empty and blew away the DDs loaded. At least that's the way it was with my NTC 280 and my bros 318. You will be amazed when you see how that 6 popper flattens hills! My first was a 97 CTD and it scared the bajezzers out of me the first time I went up mtns. along side the cars. Craig

RE: Firestone Airbg has a leak somewhere.

I found a pinhole in the side of one bag by dunking it in a bucket of water and adding a little pressure. FS woudn't just sell me a bag(s) but I got the entire kit warrantied, instead, by the dealer I got the truck from. I've had zero problems with the new set. I also had zero problems with Air Lift bags about 15 yrs ago. Craig

RE: Killer Dowel Pin in 5.9 12v

I tabbed my 97 when it had 70k on it and it had only moved about .050". I'm glad I did it. A friends 95 had the pin go thru the case and wrecked the gears. Craig

RE: Ticks!

They can be tough to get rid of. I think we brought ticks home in some nursery trees/shrubs. I had to spray all the backyard plants for several months before they were gone. Craig

RE: Interested in diesel truck for camper -

I love my 03 5.9 CR - no emmissions. I haven't priced diesel P/Us for 7 yrs. I would think you might find 05 or newer for that money. 06-07.4 CTD autos is the best Dodge autos. A later 7.3 PS 6spd manual would be great or nv5600 6spd Dodge 03-05.5. I'm biased about the NV rather than a G56. I don't know much about Duramax but my friends with them haven't had problems. Craig

I built my previous hauler bed with 11" and that wasn't enough. I built this one with 14" and have only come close to kissing it with the 5er. Craig

RE: A/C Issues With Dodge Ram?

The engine fan engages too late when the AC is on, so head pressure goes way up and pushes some refrigerant out the PR valve on the compressor. I (and many others) have added electric fans to help the condenser air flow. I also insulated the bare section of suction line under the hood, between the orifice tube and the firewall. I get cold air FAST and it does fine around town at 110+ degrees. I know I have some broken dampers but I still have good AC so I don't really need defrost or floor air in these parts and it's been that way for 2 yrs. Craig

RE: Rewiring brake system

You might need to adjust the control if the brakes work too good. I didn't have to worry about that cuz mine still aren't very good. I've thought about increasing the wire size thru my truck but I'm not nearly that ambitious. I get 12.0 to the j-box and 11.5 to the magnets. I think I'm to the point of diminishing return as far as increasing any other wire sizes. Craig

RE: Rewiring brake system

Mine had a 14ga pair running down the lt. side and I added another 14ga pair down the rt. side cuz the rt. shoes showed much less wear than the lt. from the vdc drop of the tiny ga wire running thru the axle. I think 2 - 14s would be close to the same capacity as 1 - 10ga. I only get .5 vdc drop from the front j-box to the magnets. Craig

RE: Adding an RV dump to my septic system

I put in full hookups last fall and I got advice from a GC friend who's done several dumps at his own properties. I remembered the code being 1/8 to 1/4"/ft pitch but he said it changed to 1/4" about 10 yrs ago. Too much pitch and solids get left behind so I'd be careful about having so much change in elevation. I wonder if it would be better to stair-step it and stay with 1/4" pitch on the horizontals. I would find a pro plumber for advise and be sure to do it right the first time. I T'd into the cleanout riser closest to the house so that long sweep san-tee, in the main line, will direct waste towards the tank and not the house. I haven't used it yet but I plan to pull the slip cap off the top of the cleanout riser when I dump. I want to make sure that 50' dirty-arm doesn't siphon traps in the house. Craig

RE: How do I connect portable grill to 5ver's LPG tanks?

The 11" WC from the rv was barely enough to get into the med. temp range on my olympian grill even w/o the reg on the grill. Hi-fire is about 16" WC orifice pressure on the olympian. My old regs split between the 1st and 2nd stages with a 1/4" npt nipple and there I found ~ 18 psi. I teed in there and use a 25' hose to the grill and it hits hi-fire, no problem, even with the reg/control on the grill so I still have full function of the oem control. I found the fittings at a LP supplier. It was much cheaper than the CW type kits and I have a lot longer hose. Craig
