RE: What is your favorite pass in Colorado?

Just wondering what everyone considers their favorite pass in Colorado....also what you consider the "scariest" pass..
Don't believe I've been over a pass in Colorado that wasn't just great! Seems like every time we do a new pass it is just a little better than the last -- could be that we take them a little slower now and usually do them two or three times before we leave. One pass that we always enjoy would be Berthoud Pass, Just love the decent down on the way to Winter Park or Grand Lake.
On a little different sort of pass that might have been the best drive we every took was Cinnamon Pass (12,620 ft.) the ride up to, from Lake City, and the decent down to Animas Forks and Silverton is a trip that is better every time, As soon as I leave I wonder when I'll get back -- The San Juan's are just full of great rides and even better passes.
Like I said -- hard to find a pass/or road in Colorado that is just GREAT.

RE: Diesel loss of power

Since you just had the filters changed, I would start there first. Make sure they were filled and tightened properly. If they check out ok, examine the lift pump....Dennis
On edit: What is your turbo boost showing....:h:h:h
Had a similar issue a few weeks ago and it turned out to be the turbo was not tightened when they worked on the exhaust leak -- tightened it up and ran like a champ.

RE: route co.springs to grand junction,co

Driving from the springs to Grand Junction, have a 35 ft MH (gasser) pulling a toad. Ford 6.8 engine any ideas on best route would be appreciated.. Thanks
Because we have always enjoyed Buena Vista I might suggest Rt 24 then Rt 50 to Rt 550.
Just a great trip with lots to do along the way.
As I always say hard to take a bad road in Western Colorado, so many neat little towns and sights along the way.

RE: From Glenwood Springs, CO to Bullhead City, AZ

The last leg of our summer trip has changed again, and now we need to meet up with family & friends in Bullhead City, AZ (right across from Laughlin, NV).
We had planned to head north from Glenwood Springs to Salt Lake City, and then West across Nevada to Lake Tahoe for the last week of our trip in order to stay at higher elevations and avoid the desert heat in August.
http://christineboyce.com/roadtrip2012/RouteMap2012.jpg width=900
So I'm trying to find one or two stops along the way between Glenwood Springs, CO and Bullhead City, AZ that are at higher elevations and won't be quite as hot in August. One thought is Bryce Canyon, but we've done that recently and are looking for other ideas.
Any suggestions?
Love the trip -- have actually driven all the routes you are taking -- just a couple of thoughts -- Canyon de Chelly is more than worth the effort, especially if you have a native American as a guide on the tour through the monument. Leaving RMNP and Grand Lake think about driving north through Steamboat and Craig to come into SLC fron the north Park City area is really fun in the Summer. Might even catch Dinosaur NM on the way.
Can't wait to see the trip report when you finish this year.

RE: Batimore MD to Denver CO

Thanks evryone for your recommendations. I'm going to take 70 out and pick up 34 just as we enter CO, then on to Loveland/Estes. The 74-72-36 Rt looked interesting, but with a larger rig, and concerned about fuel stops, I'm going to stick to 70.
thanks, sam
Fuel ever 60 miles or so and drove my rig at 64 the whole way out -- but I-70 is not bad just a little more boring and an hour longer.
Either way Colorado is well worth the drive.

RE: Easy 1st Trip to Colorado Recommendations

We have now upgraded our TV to the point where I can consider a trip to the more hilly, mountainous terrain areas and am looking for some recommendations to break a novice in to this type of towing experience.
There are many areas I want to go however some of them seem pretty intimidating when watching videos, pictures, reading stories...etc. So basically Million Dollar Highway is OUT at this time.
We live in Kansas City metro area so likely quickest route would be to take I-70 to CO and then from there pretty much open to recommendations. Would like to keep it to the western side of the state (just looking for a 4-5 day trip with at least 2 of them parked at the final destination to enjoy some R&R.
Thanks in advance.
One of the easier spots to get to would be Leadville then to Buena Vista (about 30 miles south on Rt24) Possible to do Rt 92 -- Independence Pass -- over to Maroon Bells - so much to see and do in the area Twin Lakes - Arkansas River - Collegiate Peaks - 4X4 trails and many just gravel roads with scenery to die for. Turquoise Lake - Quincy's for steak dinner - I could go on and on.
This will give you a taste of the mountains without making it to difficult.
BOL,
If the Million Dollar Highway is out of the question, Independence Pass (Hwy 82) would be way out. Otherwise, I agree that the Leadville/Buena Vista area would be a good introduction to Colorado. Limit yourself to 4-5 days and you'll be wishing for more.
Happy camping!
Sorry I didn't qualify the Independence drive as a TV ONLY -- the highway is restricted length so driving in the 5'er is out of the question.
Just get to Leadville or Buena Vista, set up a base camp and explore in the TV -- talk to the locals in the area to see if you might be comfortable driving Rt 24 back through the Springs and back to I-70 home.
Just one of the easiest spots to cool off in in Colorado -- next trip when you have a little more time might be to the San Juan's -- again with a base camp and lots of great drives -- just a little further and again with just no wrong drives -- this will give you a chance to acclimate your self to the mountains and mountain driving.
Just so much to see and do.

RE: Batimore MD to Denver CO

Heading out west in a few weeks. Looking at taking the central route, RT 70, or the northen route, RT 80. Both routes are about the same mileage wise. Looking for feedback from those of you that have taken these routes. I know there's always construction on RT80 near the the Great Lakes. I will be taking my 5th wheel.
Have made three trips out in the last 6 weeks - two on I 70 - I 68 - I 79 - I 70 - I 72 - I 74 Rt 36 - I 70 And one on I-70
All three where good trips but the Rt36 route is my preferred route, shorter, and faster.
I'll never take I 80 again TRUCK TRAFFIC and CONCRETE ROAD JOINTS THAT WILL SHAKE YOU APART.
Hurry out the weather has been great and Colorado is about three weeks early across the board.

RE: Estes Park, CO to Glenwood Springs, CO

One of the legs of our trip this summer will take us from Estes Park, CO to Glenwood Springs, CO. Looking at Google maps, there are 3 routes that are each estimated between 4 & 4.5 hours:
Option 1: Go East out of Estes Park, back the way we came in, and go through Boulder & Golden on our way back to I-70, and then directly to Glenwood Springs.
Option 2: Take Trail Ridge Road through RMNP and head Southwest on US-34 to Granby. The take US-40 South (and a little East) toward I-70 near Georgetown, and I-70 all the way to Glenwood Springs.
Option 3: Take Trail Ridge Road through RMNP and head Southwest on US-34 to Granby. The take US-40 West through Kremmling, and all the way to I-70 near Eagle, CO.
If we take Option 1 (mostly I-70), we'd take our time and stop at some of the towns along the way such as Georgetown, Vail, etc... and make a day of it.
My guess is that Options 2 & 3 would be a bit slower going, but probably more scenic. Is there anything in particular along those routes that we should be checking out?
I'm on the fence, and looking for any suggestions that might push me one way or the other.
Having done all three -- we enjoyed all -- but the favorite was Number three. Take a little time in Grand Lake neat little town near the lake and the kids might enjoy walking in town -- a little hokey but our grand daughter's loved it. When you drive through Kremmling take a look at stopping at Stagecoach Lake State Park -- just a little bit of Heaven in the middle of some beautiful country. (the lake and the old ski resort is just eye candy) Winter Park is also an interesting stop
Many of the roads in this area are a little tight but I can't remember any that were an issue -- we just bounced around the area for a few days and just loved the wildness of the area.
This summer will be a lot different that what you saw last summer -- a lot less snow in the high country so you will likely see everything pushed in fast forward by about three weeks -- lot less water this year and a lot warmer in the high country already.
Once again no wrong choices on the drives in Colorado, JMHO.

RE: Walmart parking lot stays - need advice please

Thanks all. This is great.
Its not so much trying to save money, as opposed to flexibility in schedule.
For example, if they decide to say longer at an attraction, or see something interesting along the way, they might have to cancel the campground for the night, and stay at a Walmart someplace in between for the night instead.
So I'm gathering that 24hr super-centers in decent neighborhoods are reasonably safe. My wife and her friend are "street-smart" and have good discernment in that respect.
Wal*Mart is one of the highly controversial and personal topic's -- over the years we have found that staying in the Wal*Mart parking lot is Safe, Convenient, and for us enjoyable. We often travel after dark on travel days between locations and have found that the Wal*Mart parking lot has camera's, security, lights and space, one of the great bonus's that we have found over the years are the number of food establishments and lower priced fuel-- add that to the ease in restocking in the store is just an added bonus.
We use this web site to find ocations;
http://www.allstays.com/c/wal-mart-locations.htm
For me Wal*Mart is a great stopping spot for us when we are travelling, giving me a location without overhanging tree's large Rocks on the curves, or neighbors that we would wake up arriving late.
IMHO Wal*Mart is a great resource for the traveling RV'er -- we use it often and without issue.

RE: Grand Canyon North Rim

Oh well, we will check when we get close. Dry camping is no biggie to us. We will make sure we arrive in the area with water tank full & holding tanks empty so we are ready for whatever happens. Bryce is next stop. Wonder what the situation is there? We have been there twice. Both times shoulder & off seasons so inside park CGs were virtually empty.
Also full is Dead Horse SP, a favourite. Done that one twice too. Shoulder season, no reservations, each time. That one is full too but a few sites appear to be unreservable, the very sites which interest us the most.
Welcome to the prime time at the National Parks -- we decided many years ago to try to only make our visits in the shoulder seasons, but sometimes you just gotta go -- go ahead and just dry camp -- it is truly different than the south side and IMHO it is not to be missed. one year driving my son to a summer internship in LA we stopped on the North Rim -- June 6th 4" of the most beautiful SNOW you have ever seen! He has never forgotten it and neither have I.
Even back then the place was full--campers all along the road dry camping and if you check with the Rangers they will usually find a good spot for you.
Don't miss lake Powell and Antelope Canyon -- Monument Valley -- Maybe do a search on many of the little spots that are so often missed.
If you are looking fo a change of pace after the desert of Utah slide over to The San Juan's of Colorado -- Much cooler and truly spectacular.

RE: HELP-- onan 8000 quiet rv generator error code 32

Found several answers by searching on here. In a previous post I answered that I could not fine an error code of 32 in my 10K book. Others have posted that it "indicates low cranking speed or low battery power".
Thanks, Ivy
That's what I concluded but all the connections are good -- although the shop that had it let the whole electrical system die -- all charged back up just not allowing it to crank.
Any way to get around it?
Busskipper
RESOLUTION
The white starter wire on the starter had been pulled off -- pushed it back on and the generator works as it always has -- some mechanic's are just not very competent.
One more thing to check with the error 32 code.
