RE: Towing a 33' bumper pull

I love algebraic questions. 33 + x + mts = y
Can someone solve y?
If you tell me X I will tell you y. If x= 3/4 ton or better then no towing a 33ft TT isn't that bad. If x= 1/2 ton or smaller then yes it will be very difficult and not such a good situation. We need more details. We need to know what you are towing with and the weights of the 33' travel trailer you are looking at in order to give you an informed decision. If you have no experience in towing whatsoever then you may want to go hook up to a uhaul and learn the basic skills of going forward and backward and how it tracks behind a vehicle.

RE: Replace a jack-knife with a sofa sleeper/

Thanks for the replies. We looked at upgrading to a new, bigger trailer, but we just love the floor plan ours so we have decided to keep it. I think we will go with the cot solution, but I will definitely look into some of the ideas the rest of you have posted.

Replace a jack-knife with a sofa sleeper/

I want to create some more sleeping space in my TT for my two kids. Right now they are both sleeping on the jack-knife, but it's getting a little small for them as they get older. I have heard of people replacing their existing jack-knife with sofa sleeper. My problem -- the jack-knife sits over a space that is currently a storage space and where some of the venting for the furnace runs. Do I have any options? I can't/don't want to lose the storage, and I really don't want to mess with re-routing furnace venting. Is there a particular line of furniture I should be looking at? Am I just relegated to keeping what I have?

Need to pick up a dogbone adapter -- which one?

in one of my upcoming camping outings, I am going to be staying at a state park that has electric hookups. But it just has 50amp connections, and I have a 30amp cord, so I will need an adapter. Should I get this one that has a small cord with it:

or this one, which is just the plug itself:

or does it matter?

RE: What am I to do??? rant....

Just my 2 cents worth:
-- I own one of the "nasty" yellow generators, and yes, it is louder than the red or blue ones but not by much. I was in a free CG last weekend and had it running for a couple hours just to run some appliances. It wasn't any louder than all the ATVs running past the CG or the folks pulling in and out of the CG with their diesel TVs. I walked from spot to spot in the CG to make sure the noise was not a bother to anyone else, and nobody had a problem with it. In fact, the noise was not even audible in most of the CG.
-- With that said, this guy should have more courteous and not run it that long. Regardless of noise, NO generator should be run that long. I had a guy last year run his blue one next to us all day long. Guess what? Even with as quiet as it was, it got real old, real fast. If you have appliances that need juice 24/7, go to a CG that has electric hookups. I know that's not possible sometimes, but even most state parks now have sites with electric, and they are not expensive at all.
-- The yellow ones are NOT construction generators. If you ever stand next to one and then stand next to a true construction generator, you will easily notice a difference. The yellow 3500 watt is designed for RVs, and even has a designated RV 30amp plug-in. I do not run it very often, as I am pretty generous with the use of my batteries and rarely camp for more than a couple nights a time. But when I do have it going, I try to make sure I am being as respectful to my neighbors as possible. I never run it before 9am and never after 8pm. Most of the time when it's going, nobody is in the CG anyway; folks are usually out fishing/hiking/biking, etc.
-- No, none of this makes me any better or any worse than those who use the blues or reds. I am just pointing out the we all need be more respectful and courteous, but we also need to step back and look at the situations in which any generator is being used. A free spot at a casino? I am guessing there is not much to substantiate your complaint. A paid spot in a national park CG? You bet - you then have a legitimate gripe!

RE: Keeping up with traffic

I do about 60mph. It gives me the best gas mileage and it is a speed I am comfortable with. I can handle the rig better, I have better braking time and capacity.

RE: Purchasing an RV-Dave Ramsey

I don't believe that the majority of the readers of this thread are 'debt free'. That is just not possible. That is just not possible. It's the chest thumpers that need to type how many 'things' they have paid cash for. Good for them..but don't be thinking that you are alone. Far more owe, than not..and there-in lies the problem. It's not about how much a person owns, it's about how much they didn't pay in interest. In Canada, it was pointed out that a person pays x3 in interest alone, the borrowed amount when buying a house. That's x3 plus the principle. Those kinds of numbers are a fair indication of the cost associated with borrowing vs debt free. plus home mortgages are way cheaper than credit card debt.
It's always best to avoid debt, of any kind, and if you do have it, to get rid of it, ASAP. However, the world lives on credit and not many can just pay cash. It is not an easy argument to make when the family is needing stuff, your pals are going out with the TT, ATV, boat and and and. I don't think that the answer is easy. Straight forward, yes....but not easy.
Gary Haupt
Gary -- it is easily possible. People just need to quit having the "I need it right now" attitude, or the "I deserve it" attitude, or the "The Jones' have one so I should too" attitude.

RE: Purchasing an RV-Dave Ramsey

We have lived debt free for several years, and my wife and I are only in our early 40's. We definitely subscribe to the theory that if you can't afford to pay cash for it, you don't need it. People are way too much in a hurry to have everything and have it now. Just save for a while, and you'd be surprised by the things you can then pay cash for. Also -- you don't need the biggest and best and newest! Buy what you need and quit being excessive. We have paid cash for our vehicles, and just last year paid cash for our TT. They were not new, and they are not the best things since sliced bread. But they are nice and just exactly what I need.

Black tank dumped. Now what?

I am sure this topic has been covered before, I just can't seem to find the exact thread(s) that have covered it in the past. I just got back from camping this weekend, and noticed that for the first time since we bought our trailer last year that we were getting some odor up from the black tank. When we got home, I did a real deep clean of the tank. But what are you supposed to do after you clean the tanks out and then put the trailer away for a few weeks? We won't be back out on the road until after the fourth of July, and so the trailer won't be used for a few weeks. In the past, I have just stored the trailer with the tanks emptied and cleaned, and that's all. Is there something else I should be doing to help eliminate odors? Should I drop some holding tank chemical into it while it sits or what? Your good advice is extremely welcomed!

RE: Coffee anyone?

We use the Braun drip coffee maker when on shore power, and good ole-fashioned percolator when dry camping.
