RE: Portable Waste Tanks

Steve & Linda: Yeah no kidding - hope we got enough truck to tow it...Problem with the F350 is that even at an idle it goes too fast!! Nice idea on the flag.

RE: Portable Waste Tanks

It will go into the back of my truck for the ride home of 50 miles then back to the lake the next weekend. I got a big strong 17 boy to load it into the truck for me. Hope he is an ox! Thats a lot of water to lift 3 feet up. Maybe use a ramp. 32G Barker for me. Tows loud and I feel kinda foolish pulling it behind the F350.

RE: New Concrete Driveway for 5th Wheel

Concrete is to suppossed to reach its designed strength in 28 days of cure, depending on your weather it will cure faster or slower than that. The strength of concrete is based on an average of three samples cured at specific temperatures and under moist conditions (submerged in a water tank at 20 degrees C). I do not know psi - only mpa (Canada eh!). Your PSI strength is about 30MPA - most residential driveways are 25MPA. City paving here is 32MPA, Major highways are about 38MPA. From the charts I have seen there is not as much of a strength gain between 4 and 8 weeks, but there is still a slight gain. Air entrainment is primarily used to help with exposure to freeze thaw cycles, unfortunatly a 5 to 15% loss in strength may result with the use of Air Entrainment agents in higher strength mix designs. My driveway was highway mix strength with rebar 10 - 12" on center. It ain't moving and whoever has to remove it will curse me! 11,000 divided by 6 points of contact is about 1800 lbs per (tire/jack), you should be good at 2 weeks, but if you can wait until 4 it is best for all vehicles. (that's the legal answer!) If you looked for a claim and parked before 28 days - too bad, so sad. Hope that helps you decide when to park on your slab, if you do it early and you see cracks - your contractor has an out.

RE: Please assess this (detailed) set up...

I was banking on the fact that I would not actually put THAT much stuff in one. Hopefully that is correct! I have "collected" about 814 Lbs of stuff in mine. Dry I am 6880 (as in brochure) Ready for camping (no water) and I am 7694. Hitch weight was about 836 before I added two more batteries.

RE: Please assess this (detailed) set up...

Estimate how much the trailer weighs with camping gear and you will creep up very close to the GCWR of your unit. When I run the numbers for all the 1/2 tons out there I always find that the limiting factor is the GCWR (Truck and Trailer). I think it poor sport to publish a high trailer tow rating then use GCWR to it that substantially. If you can get the actual curb weight of your truck it makes calculating your numbers easier - the options add weight.

RE: Fix & Keep or Trade for New

Is this a first time offense? How many issues have you had with the truck before this most recent issue? Yes and no, it's the first issue (on any vehicle) to strand me in many, many, years. But I have suspicions about the Exhaust system because of the occassional clouds of white smoke under acceleration or the really bad smell that everyone who parks near me complains about. All other items fixed no problem. It's been a good truck - till this trip.

RE: Fix & Keep or Trade for New

Wow, see I am not the only one on the computer today... Thanks for the straw poll. Answers to some of the questions: I should clarify the truck is being towed to my original selling dealer (#4) who has serviced it all through the first 100,000 Km's while it was under the Ford prepaid maintenance plan. Dealer #1 was near my destination, and I spoke to him by phone. He helped me get going as it was a Friday at 3:30 and didn't want to strand me. The dealer #2 was the closest one and I suspected a plugged DPF they made a wiring fix (TSB on that). They worked on it. Third dealer was on route home and they have a positive local reputation, I died almost in front of their shop. They were 100% up front when I called them before I towed it in that they were busy and it may be a few days until someone looked at it. I just found out how long today, they called me in case I wanted to move it to another dealer. No mods or a tuner - was the first question asked by dealer #2 as well. So I delt with 4 different dealers/techs and would say I have a positive view on three of them. Truck has good value as only 112,000 Kms (approx 69,500 miles).

Fix & Keep or Trade for New

Okay, here is a question of reliability and faith in a vehicle. Out of curiosity I wonder how many here would keep the faith with a vehicle and how many would dump and run. Like all things it boils down to personal opinions, but seeing as I am not camping these days, might as well play on the computer. On May 4th my 08 F350 had a message of "Stop Safely Now" pop up, as I got the vehicle to the roadside it stalled out. With the help of a dealer I was able to limp to my destination by a process of wait 60mins, clear codes, re-start. Drive for 45 to 60 minutes and repeat. On Sunday the 45 mins shrunk to 25 mins and eventually gave up at a dealer and left the truck, and fetched another to get myself, camper, and canoe home. That dealer was not able to get it to perform on road test and deciphered the following codes: P242D Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit High Bank 1 Sensor 3 P242B Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Bank 1 Sensor 3 P2002 Diesel Particulate Filter Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1 Only the P2002 code existed after the work was done, but they reprogrammed the PCM. After picking it up 20 mins later it died. Dropped off at yet another dealer, but they cannot work on it until June, so it is getting towed back to the original dealer to get looked at. Still under Powertrain and emissions warranty for about another year. So would you still trust your truck after it left you stranded?

RE: I-70 in Colorado up to Estes Park

....you want to stay away from the I-25/I-76/I-70 area. ..... I second Billy's advice. I hit Denver on a Friday night at rush hour after a long drive from Yellowstone. Travelled on the I-25 & I-225. Wasn't all that much fun at the end of a long day's drive.

RE: Built a new battery rack, what do you guys think?

I have three Group 31's accross my tongue and you will like the extra juice. Add an inverter and your good to go anywhere.

RE: Walkie-Talkie for backing up.

I read a suggestion on here about using FRS radios. Have a few and one set stays in the TV for use when needed. It's a bit of a gong show - but we have a good time and the trailer gets level and we haven't hit anything (yet).

RE: Still planning the route from Iowa to Al-Can

The prairies have a certain "stark" beauty. That's a polite way to describe it. ;) Elk Island NP is just outside Edmonton (in prarie terms). PianoTuna will be more familair with the area but isn't the Qu'Appelle Valley between Regina and Saskatoon? I drove it once many many years ago between those cities.

RE: 2011 Ford 6.7 Litre?

I tried mine out this summer before the trip thru the US on a long hill heading in a valley. It was late and I was excitedly exclaimed "the engines breaking" as it reved up - Poor family, took them 15 mins to calm down.

RE: Crossing the Boarder

I go with nothing except water, pop, and the a couple of packaged items (mac & cheese & canned pasta) just in case we stop before a store. I find it speeds up the crossing and if I can make their job easier and faster I think we both win! And as pianotuna said- they always go in the rig and in the fridge - just expect it.

RE: Tow Vehicle and Cold Weather Camping Questions

i've heard stories of guys with big diesels with lots of torque hitting 70, but you have a gasser. The stories are true - but not recommended. (sorry couldn't resist) :B 60 is a good speed. You will find your trucks "sweet spot" but wind will wear you, your speed and milage down.

RE: A question for our Canadian friends

I once worked in a butcher shop. I still eat ground beef and hot dogs. You get over it. If it was from Montreal or PQ, not likely to be found out west. It's a Canadian thing.

RE: yellowstone national park

I found we didn't stay much at the campsite and I had a nice site in Bridge Bay. If outside I would find the cody drive too long for a daily commute. Do make reservations.
