RE: Fluid For Leveling Jacks

Interesting, we have HWH saying that the jacks can be wiped down with WD40 or AFT, lots of us doing just that because it makes it easier, and a lot of people having replaced old springs with new ones to get them to retract quicker and yet we are all wrong? If we are traveling every day, then we don't have to wipe the jacks down, but when we are stationery for a few weeks, it does help. And before we replaced the springs we had one jack that we needed to use a board to get it up - - new springs, up right way. So experience doesn't count for anything, just Doug's opinion? Barb

RE: Sanitizing vs. Chlorination for fresh water ?

Since they use city water, obviously they will be using the water heater. So the suggestion that they leave the water heater open isn't useful. I didn't see where he was going to sell it, guess I missed that. Barb

RE: Sanitizing vs. Chlorination for fresh water ?

If you are running city water through all of the lines on a routine basis, then the need for 'sanitizing' isn't really there. We fill the fresh water tank and use it during traveling down the road for flushing toilet, washing hands, etc. Usually are hooked up to city water when parked. Every once in a while, we dump the fresh water tank (have a valve underneath the center of the coach) which can create a 60-70 gallon puddle in a hurry. Then refill with good city water. We've been fulltiming for 6 years and have never bleach shocked the fresh water tank. The Thetford chemicals are the same active ingredients that are present in the Clorox Disinfectant wipes that you can buy for cleaning counters, etc. There are some concerns about allergic reactions for some people. Cheaper just to use a bleach solution if you feel you need to sanitize the freshwater tank. Barb

RE: Fluid For Leveling Jacks

"Now, the reason your jacks won't go all the way up is lack of lubrication on the jacks. Spray the shinny part with silicone spray." WRONG. It is just as I posted. HWH jacks NEVER need external lubrication. They are IMMERSED in ATF when retracted. Silicone or any other remedy is just a band-aid for the REAL problem. Yes, lubing will work for a few times but is NOT a permanent fix. Also, HWH fluid is clear and does NOT have the red dye that Dextron uses but you CAN mix the 2 with no problem. Doug Funny, ours will get a little slow, Dave wipes them down with a little Dextron III and they come up smooth as can be. Just because you've never done it doesn't mean that a lot of us don't and find that it makes things just a little easier. Also, a lot of people have trouble with the springs, we added the newer heavier ones and it make a lot of difference for us. Barb

RE: Residency ? on Buying New Vehicle

I Have a ? My home address is Texas and we are in Nevada. We are looking to buy a Used Motorhome here in Nevada. Am I gonna have to change my residency to Nevada to purchase here? We wont be back in Texas till next year most likely. I really would like to keep Texas as my primary residency. No, you don't have to change your residency. You didn't say what county you are in, but most counties will work with you to register the vehicle by mail. I know that Polk County does this for lots and lots of Escapees. That said, are you planning on staying in Nevada for an extended period of time? If so, then you need to rethink your status. Barb

Yes, you can drive MH through San Francisco

We were on the west side of the bay (Redwood City) and didn't want to drive clear around and remembered that instructions had been posted on another forum as to driving through SF. We decided to try it on a Thursday morning at about 11:00 am. Take 101 to I-380 (just past SF Airport), I-380 to I-280 (north), then take the 19th Ave exit, stay in the MIDDLE land, go about 4 miles through some stop and go traffic, join Highway 101 just before the bridge and get in the right land to go around the toll booths (no tolls collected going north) and stay in that lane (signs will tell you to) as you go across the bridge. Certainly a lot less time than going around the bay and traffic ran smoothly for us that day. Barb

RE: $100k Budget, Hydronic Heating, Quality Coach

Go look at Motorhomes of Texas at a used Foretravel. They are really good coaches, might be a little older than some others, but they are well built and would be a great option for you. Barb

RE: New to forum, and lots of questions

Is there a reason that you have zeroed in on a 5er only? There are many, many of us that fulltime in a motorhome. Good reasons for each option, but if you are still in the looking stage, you really need to be thinking outside of the box as you try and determine what will work for you. Barb

RE: Satellite Fee's from Direct TV, city to city free

We really don't care about local channels, we're fulltimers, like having east and west coast feed and if we are in an area where the antenna will pick up local channels, fine. Just not that hung up on local stations - don't need the local news to see how many shootings, fires, traffic congestion there was that day and anything on a local channel will probably be on one of the satellite channels. RE: Camping Memberships - how many do you have?

We have a Western Horizon membership, with ROD, AOR, and C2C affiliates. In addition this year we purchased a TT zone membership for the west coast since they pulled out of ROD because we have relatives in Washington plus like spending time in the Sonoma Valley (Russian River Park), as well as other places that were once part of ROD. We have almost given up on Passport America - they have so many limitations and find that they seldom work for us. We do use Good Sam from time to time. Monterey County (CA) parks give the Good Sam discount - was surprised to see that as we self-registered. We are also Escapees members, so use their parks (along with the Co-Op parks) whenever we can. And having the Senior Pass means that we get 1/2 off camping at Corps of Engineers parks - - that is a real value. We also like to use city/county parks and fairgrounds when ever we can find them. Even my hometown has an RV park next to the river (where the old garbage dump was when I was growing up) and we stay there when visiting my mother for our week out from membership parks. Monthly membership costs is a little over $50. Barb

RE: Camping Memberships - how many do you have?

Unfortunately TT pulled out of ROD, we really like them. Barb From talking with the management of a membership campground, my understanding is ROD kicked TT out for refusing to compile with the rules, in regards to ROD members using TT parks. Well, when you agree to do the change, and they rescind the agreement, wouldn't you call that pulling out? What was ROD suppose to do? The agreement was that they would allow ROD into ALL of the TT parks, not just NACO and Leisure Time after an agreement upon time. So I don't think you can characterize it as ROD kicking TT out but rather TT not living up to their agreement. Barb

RE: Getting ready to go full time!!! Where to winter?

Stayed at KM Resort's: Travel Inn RV Resort in Elma, WA this past winter. We had only 1 snow storm all winter and it was on Jan 17th. It was about 8 inches and the snow lasted less than a week. I wore short-sleeve polo shirts, docker shorts, and sandals (barefoot) - even in the snow, all winter long. I think I wore a parka 4 times - because it is goretex, has a hood, and it was raining out. I saved a good $2,400 or so - just in gasoline not purchased for the trip to AZ and back. From Oct 1 to Apr 30 I can stay 21-7-21 and I don't pay for electricity on my KM resort membership. I purchased 7 out-weeks @ $128.11 (includes tax) per out-week. In other words, I paid $896.77 for 7 months and I didn't put a drop of gas in the tank. I'd like to see a snowbird beat that at an RV park. There were some 40-60 RVs here all winter. It was not boring in the clubhouse, to say the least. But the idea of being a 'snowbird' is to go where the weather is a lot more pleasant. The reason we RV is because there are wheels underneath so that we can move with the seasons chasing the 75° mark. At some point we won't be able to move about, but while we can, we sure are going to do it rather than sit in unpleasant weather for months at a time. Barb

RE: What do full timers do to NOT become bored with life style

I have no idea what we do every , that isn't important to us. The first thing you have to realize is that once you are retired, you don't have to live your life by the clock. We get up when we wake up. We have breakfast, maybe sit outside and have coffee and read our email, then we have something we do that day - maybe golf, maybe geocaching, maybe it is grocery day, maybe a museum, maybe it is "utility" day and we need to check the batteries, empty tanks, clean windows, vacumn, etc., maybe it is read a good book and take a nap day, maybe it is something else. Whatever, we always leave an area with things to see when we are in the area again, and a few things lined up to do at the next stop. If it is raining, then maybe we do a museum day, read a book, do the laundry, etc. If you look upon this as an opportunity to learn about different areas, different people, etc., then you'll never be bored. But you have to decide what it is that your interested in doing - - and they will probably be some of the same things that you would do if you were retired living in a S&B in your current town - just doing them in a different setting. BTW - reading the blogs of people who post on rv forums is one way of seeing the wide variety of different ways that people fulltime. Barb

RE: Getting ready to go full time!!! Where to winter?

The reason that the rate is low is that it is out in the middle of nowhere. If you like the desert and don't mind having to drive to get to things, it is an interesting area. We like to be closer to restaurants, shopping, theatre, museums, etc., which is why we go to Mesa. Barb

RE: Trying to plan ahead... all plans written in jello?

I never call for an appointment more than 2 months ahead of time. Our problem is always the constant turnover in office staff meaning that you have to re-educate them as to why you can't drop in for your 6 months checkup when you are in Seattle and the physician is in Tyler, Tx. Barb

RE: Splendide W/D

Most often it is because of an uneven number of items, too many items, etc. Think balance as you are loading - two big towels and two hand towels, two pairs of jeans and two t-shirts, etc. Also, make sure the feet are down and solidly sitting on the floor. We get a little shimmy going to high spin, that's all. Barb

RE: Red Fluid in Hot Water Heater

The motor aid is really nice if you are Wally parking for the night, no need to use propane to heat the water because it will be HOT when you stop and stay that way for a looong time. Nice to stop, have dinner, clean up, shower, go to bed and then go in the morning, all without having to use propane to heat water. Barb

RE: BAd experience with Camping World I-26

Moral to the story use the available gadgets including a map to find your way when driving a large RV. Trust no one but your self. Don't expect accurate directions from a store clerk! Relying on a store clerk to give you directions while driving a large RV is asking for trouble. Just my 2 cents of course. If a business that caters to RVs can't give you accurate information to your store, nor let you know the parking problem, they are the problem and should be reported to others. Don't we all learn from each other? Barb

RE: Red Fluid in Hot Water Heater

That is antifreeze from the motor aid. The motor aid is what heats your water as you travel. It's a Winnebago thing. Not all RV's have it. Lots of different DPs have it. Ours does. Barb
