RE: Any ideas for a homemade seat shock absorber?

I'll second the truck junker search safari!, but DO disasemble the base of your flex steel. I know it looks like a cube, with two flanges welded on each end.
show the adaptor to the yard manager AND talk around the truckers that are on site, they might have the idea of WHAT MODEL, and where to find would be closer to do the adaptation.
and sure enough the seat will REST higher than normal, but when you sit it will "sag" a little to a more "normal, after installation" height.
hope it helps.

RE: Furnace starts by itself

Not related but once I had a "ghost" story.
a bunch of years ago my electromechanic told us a story:
he also serviced a bakery with an automatic oven, and sudenly in the middle of the night the bakery called to tell that THE OVEN WAS HAUNTED! it started by itself with no reason, all switches to off (it was a fairly modern oven with some electronic boards). This guy first "takes his time" to look around and sudenly he started to LHAO!!! (in front of the VERY frightened owner)
his explanation was that a few days ago some salesperson was selling a "very special" (BS) contact cleaner with free deostration, so the owner of the bakery allowed this guy to hose down the boards with spray.... PPPPFFFFFSHHHHHHHHST!
so the boards where squaky clean...
in the rear of one of the boards, a trail of carbon soot(sp?) made with a trail of a drop that the liquid cleaner had left (the board was mounted vertically) and with the right conditions of maybe ambient temp, humidity or else, the trail became conductive and triggering a transistor that turned on the whole oven!, with blowers, transportation belts, EVERITHING!.
he demostrated to the (very puzled owner) by bridgeing the trail of soot with a wire he got the "haunted FXs".
(now the very ashamed looking down) owner had to pay VERY EXPENSIVE for a swipe of a finger over carbon dirt!
moral of the story... clean your boards!

RE: front brakes overheating and abs warning light

also you better check the "gap" in the push pull configuration of the rods that goes from the pedal to the actual pump, they may me a little "too tight".
in the punp there is a very little hole that let the fluid circulate, if those holes are closed, after a while the heat will lockup the calipers...
OR your brake fluid is OLD enough to have swollen and softened the pump gaskets, and closed the little holes.
hope you where NOT in those situation where you are blocking the trafic!!!! :o
I had my front calipers refurbished and have the parts number HERE .

RE: Adaptive Strategy learns while you drive

actually is NOT that easy, for that to happen, in some units the brake has to be applied to "erase" some partial sections of the meme, on others is a sequence of fuses pulled (with bat on) others the flash mem is NOT erasable by lost of power.
some of the tables goes to original state, but not all.

RE: Adaptive Strategy learns while you drive

Is a bunch of publicity BS!.
in reality is that the ECM has diferent tuning tables (i.e fuel-air ratio, fuel-TPS, fuel-torque demand, speed-gear) and sometimes lets say some are agressive in timing (for hard acceleretion) or others are easy on the gears (relative high speed-high vacuum-low TPS and thus select lower gear) ETC. and the ECM knows which table is used most frecuent and gives a "priority" order in to which to look up before the other tables are looked upon...
in modern ECMs they are cappable in a small engined car (rev limiter to about 7krpm) even at that rpm the ECM "thinks" and calculates EACH explosion (exact mixture) for about 30 (yes Thirty, NOT three HUNDRED!!!!)deg of crank rotation, the rest of the time "waits" for subtle changes in sensor inputs.
the ECM can detect uneven aceleration between "predicted" times of "firing" of each cyl, this is one of the many "tools" an ECM has to measure misfires and detect which cyl is at fault (an even has memory to store history of each cyl NUMBER of misfires) AN MUCH MUCH MORE MANY GOODIES!!!!
yes I can fully program ECM's, (even VIN#s) thanks for asking.
also sometimes the driving are influenced by what are called long term fuel trims, and short term fuel trims. also another variable in how we DEMAND TORQUE to an engine.

RE: 2 new shows on Thursday Eve

I guess this "type" of persons are seldom seen "on the road" much less CAMPING they go to five stars hotels TO THE PRESIDENTIAL SUITES!!! (unless they travel in the RVs, because the limos are "not enough bling"!) also depending on the level of the clebrity status much of the RVs are just "loaned" or agreed to be signed as property only to be sold the very next day with the "exclusive" of LOOK AT THIS DEALER, WE HAVE HUGH HEFNER'S RV!!!
edit: perhaps the exeption of a true RVer is JEFF DANIELS, wich when the begining of shooting RV, all the actors where cited in advance for RV driving lessons, to the surprise of all crew Jeff showed up driving his own RV and such, the lessons where "quicly cancelled"! (acording to the directors comentary in the RV dvd.)

RE: warning about obtaining brake hoses

I had to rebuild my front brake calipers (chev P-30, 89'), in the meanwhile I had custom made steel braided lines to substitute the prone-to-clog rubber hoses to the calipers.
when I was bleeding the brakes I ruptured a steel line (by murphy's law it had to be the longest, hardest to change), again I had to make another custom made, had to take mine to the hyd shop (there is a bunch of brake shops around every other town)for them to "see" the end fittings and install new ones, also there are a lot of hose mfgs that the trucks are familiar with, they could help.
fortunatelly the line ruptured there and not in a very steep downhill a couple blocks away from my house!!!!!!:E
SCROLL TO THE LAST REPLY... but the whole thread is interesting.

RE: Shifting toad transfer case from neutral to 2H

IMHO are doing circles on a stuborn mechanical issue, when in reality is a ANAL ISUE!, let me explain is exactly the same as me when I press de release button of the em brake handle, just for NOT to hear the ratcheting sound, he doesnt like the grinding noise, I understand and simpatise (sp?).
I move toward asimple solution which doesnt involve starting the jeep“ s engine, whenver youre parking to unhook it, BACK UP about two-three feet, this will "unload" the gears and COULD slide into position easier, because they have now some more "end play" between them to mesh.

RE: Axle gear oil change interval?

I really doubt if any of our rear ends has some sort of posy or locking mechanism, also I KNOW that the aditives in gear oils DO wear out, althou much slower that an engine oil, but IF no dirt ever comes to the oil or other contaminants, why when you change the oil is a REAL BLACK MESS!!!.
and to be sure with mine I changed the rear dif with MOTUL 90EP with MoLi. which makes the oil already black and messy, but is reasuring!.

RE: Dreaded Check Engine Light

When our engine shutdown with the check engine light flashing, it was because of low coolant... Simply added more, and it worked fine. ps. the low coolant light/message never came on.
yout water sensor is blocked with lime!
Why such a important "tool" and as small as a calculator is not carried regularly, a garden variety SCAN TOOL!

RE: Propane tank fix for extended stays

I'll disconnect the complete regulator (is a LEFT HAND thread) and plug it to a 20# grill tank.
They are very practical in where you could find anywhere at almost anytime, and accesories like an extension is easily found.
Since theyre so portable and cheap you might as well buy two soyoure not "left" in the dark.

I really enjoyed reading This site, about how SHOULD us be rewiring our lighting sistem, because is so expensive for a factory to do that!.
but the results are amazing, and a reasuring peace of mind (youre NOT thinking about some HOT wire operating around!!!!)

RE: The Fleetwood Mac project

F**F*A*N*T*A*S*T*I*C****!!!!
I have one of those and I wish I had the time (or the will) to do the walls!
in this vehicles the converter crages ONLY the "house" bat, the alt charges both thru the bat isolator.
also in the bathroom there is a GFP swithc that when tripped isolates all the front 110v outlets. (no current).
Unfortunatelly I could not add the background music but if you click it! it might!!!!
good luck!

RE: P30 Sterring, Brake and Shifting issues Oh My!

I feel your sorrow!
well seriously, if youre mechanically inclined, YOU HAVE FOUND A NEW HOBBY-JOB!
as stated before ditto on the fluid level, and if OK just change the whole steering pump, they are not expensive and they could be found in pep boys. the trick is to find the aplication because "most" of the chasis part came from big cars, NOT small trucks.
I would service the brakes I had to change (for my peade of mind) the central pump, and serviced the calipers with new rubber, also new pads, had to change a brake line (out of corrosion!) this where my BRAKE ADVENTURES.
with the trany, I have a chevy p-30 chassis with a TH400 3 sp tranny.
and once I had this major SCARE! (to my wallet at least)!.
and of course in time I has changed a lot of rubber hoses, belts, all the liquids, and ALL filters.
also had my hads full with a AIR BAG change.
hope this helps.

RE: Suicide Knob

I gess is not about "IF" you can turn the wheel, Of course you can!,
that is rested, as a test in where you drive the rig around the block, but ask yourself if you can do the same promptly and sharply after 4 hours of having the arms stretched, and Im not talking continuos (sp?) but after a day of driving... say three days like that...
coul you do it?
What if It starts a little pain... and gets worse.... and NEED TO TURN AROUND! be carefull! (do you have a backup driver?)

RE: Leveling and twisting a frame.

would a TIRE risen about 5 inches would not twist the frame? if I made a u-turn and clip the sidewalk with the front tire... and leave the rig there... wouldn that twist the frame?
if I change a tire and rise the truck 10 inches to change sucha tire would it twist the frame?
I fail to see why a chasys would be severely twisted beyond "return to straight from factory specs" if lifted from one corner only; my point is that the jacks are so slow that you could consider them as "static" loads, but the roads place many times the weight of the whole chasis in one corner as in "dinamic loads", or "instant loads".
I think those with problems with twisting frames are severily weak structures and the jacs placed in a way that the forces would multiply in a weak point of the chasis.
