RE: Need campgrounds on the Astoria Oregon coast

a good overview ... don't know if ALL CGs are listed - but most appear to be (at least the public ones - NOT so much on the PRIVATE Parks!)

RE: Just Back From Crater Lake N.P. & S. Oregon

If you have both propane/electric water heater - just turn on the LPG first for a few minutes and you get almost instant hot water (in a TC 6gal tank anyway :B).
Then switch it back over to electric (cuz there's no use to waste any more propane than needed)!
When we're dry camping or boondocking on LPG - at night we turn the hot water tank OFF and then turn it back on first thing when we get up. After it gets HOT and we're done with breakfast/dishes & getting ready in the morning - we turn it off until usually around mid-day (depending on how much we've used the hot water.) AND then OFF again. Otherwise ours is so HOT - that we have to keep diluting it with COLD anyway.
With the fiver sticky toilet lever - it didn't matter whether we used a regulator or not. BUT after it happens a couple of times - you tend to make sure that you've taken enough precautions to make sure it doesn't happen again :p
With the truck camper - we have a CHECK LIST posted by the door :C
Just when you think you have everything covered - occassionally one slips by!
Have fun camping. Awesome country the West Coast (of course the WHOLE Country & Canada are beautiful... I think we're going to have to live to be over a 100 to see it all on our Bucket Lists!!)

RE: Cape Kiwanda @ Pacific City, Or

Not familar with Webb County CG - we usually stay at USFS Sandbeach CG (MID-WEEK OFF-SEASON!! #52-60 or beyond in the first come first serve NONreservable sites)
http://www.ocnsignal.com/northern-oregon-coast-camping.html
If you eat at Pelican Pub & the weather's nice - the pups are allowed to stay on the sand next to your table on the deck :C
Be sure to visit the Cape Meares Lighthouse AND stop at Tillamook Cheese for an ice cream cone :B

Been there done that ... :B
We had a 35' fiver where the lever would occassionally stick - so if you didn't make sure to push it all the way back - the toilet bowl would just keep FILLING/FLOODING! At least it was FRESH water!! One way to clean the carpet :E
Glad to hear that you had a great time otherwise. :C Soo much to see - too little time to see it all ...

RE: UPDATE YAY! got the Frig restarted!!

I am glad you got your rig back and all systems are go. My biggest hassle with mine is getting that fridge to work consistently. This fall I am going with a new burner assembly and complete cleaning. The unit is sitting on the table now awaiting parts. Stepping back are you exagerating when you speak of a 45+ degree angle. I now things are not exactly flat out there but at 45 degrees unless you are parked on granite with wheels blocked you should just slide downhill untill you come to rest at a slightly less angle. Side ways you most likely would just lay over on you side due to high center of gravity. I am sure some engineer will come along and confirm or rebut this but. Picture a line drawn diagonaly across your computer screen. If you have a square screen thats 45, if its a wide screen more like 30. My fridge will not work outside 3 degrees one way and I believe 6 the other. Tween here and the black hills its hard to find a slope like that.
Okay okay ... I may have "overestimated" the slope just a wee bit :@
But when yall are pitched on your nose - it certainly seems like more than say a mere 7-8% grade :E
AND then when ya witness your tranny smokin - HOLY COW ... no doubt I've been babbling like a loon for the last few days!! (but then again some might think I'm always an airhead :h so it would just be "normal" for me :W)
But I sure am relieved that we didn't go slidin down no hill nor end up layin over on our side :p Just when ya think things are bad ... seems they can always be worse. Kinda puts things in proper perspective!
I did take some pixs with the cell phone - but they probably won't do the situation any justice.
However - WHOEVER layed out the Campground - must have won an award for creativity. :B
AGAIN - I want to thank EVERYONE for all their comments. It's times like these when you're far from home and feelin' UNSETTLED that it's so good to know that there are folks out there who UNDERSTAND ...
And all in all ... save for the $4200 repair bill :E plus hotel & pet boarding ... WE HAD A REALLY GREAT TIME :B
As Always Cheers,

RE: UPDATE YAY! got the Frig restarted!!

Oh happy day ...
Finally things are going right again (knock on wood).
Picked up the truck AGAIN this morning - after the Ford Dealer in Sonora "replaced the replacement transmission". Seems two gears were faulty in the remanufactured tranny they first installed!! Hammond Ford really came through for us - to get us back on the road - they installed TWO transmissions, a deeper bigger capacity pan, and a fan in three and a 1/2 days. (From Mon. afternoon when they got the 1st one in from Sacramento which they ordered that morning - to Thursday before closing at 5:30)
So we loaded up the camper, hitched up the Harley trailer, picked up the dog & cat from the kennel ... and are headed for home.
Now as to the "no co"/fault code problem with the frig. We stuck a bag of ice in the freezer compartment along with what we have left of the frig/freezer food. Then "shook, rattled, and rolled" down I-5 for over 3 hrs plus the two or so hours from Sonora/Jamestown to Stockton. :B Settled into a very nice National Forest CG WITH elect/water/some pull-thrus/& honors the old folks pass (can't believe that there are only 6 out of 30 campsites inc. us & the CG Host that are occupied for a Friday nt?! we figured it would be full by the time we pulled in after 4!)
Anyway - we made sure the camper was LEVEL - followed the instructions per ejmorgan and cleary's posts on how to do a RESET and YAY our frig is working again :@
A huge heartfelt thanks for the info ... AND if the TC Forum doesn't have the link in the TC library - IT DEFINITELY SHOULD BE ADDED.
It's so good to be back on the road again :B
Opa,

doing a happy dance here ...

RE: UPDATE - Expect the Unexpected!

OK HERE'S THE LATEST!!
I'll post it - so that maybe others might find the info useful ... and anyone who has already responded can add additional comments/questions if they think of any :@
As you know - the FIRST rebuilt/remanufactured transmission the Dealership installed, started acting up yesterday when we were coming back down 120 from Crane Flat after picking up our utility trailer.
Thus BACK to HAMMOND FORD in Sonora.
THIS AFTERNOON - we get the call that THAT transmission was FAULTY!! BUT they were able to get a SECOND reman (the 1st came from Sacramento - don't know where the 2nd came in from?!). The truck is now ready to be picked up AGAIN!! Sooo WE'LL SEE (only have 1 more nt here as the Condo Resort was full up for the weekend - but we were prepared to "camp out" in the Ford Dealership parking lot if need be!)
So to try to answer some of the questions here is the breakdown:
F81Z 7V000 LBRM: (REMAN) TRANSMISSION ASY = $2515
E40D/4R100 PAN = $370
this is supposed to be the BIGGER, DEEPER, MORE CAPACITY PAN (which was one of the contributing factors in our original tranny going out as it came stock with the SMALLER pan)
XC3Z 7A095 BA: OIL COOLER ASY = $209
(assuming this is the FAN)
Misc. gasket/Oil = $48
Labor = $874
(Tax = $228)
GRAND TOTAL = $4242!!
*NO ADDITONAL CHARGES* FOR SECOND INSTALL (well I should expect NOT!!)
3 year UNLIMITED Mileage Warranty
... hmmm guess we're going to have to drive it like he!! to recoop the expense:W
BUT what are you going to do?! Especially when you're a 1000 miles from home!!
Thanks to all for your responses.
Still Cheers,

RE: UPDATE - Expect the Unexpected!

btggraphix -
Right now we're actually "camping" in style:W It seems that we have a condo membership which happens to have a RESORT AT ANGELS CAMP (bought a few years back in a fit of giddyishness which is quite contrary to us!! boy I can see how easy it is to get swept up in such "purchases".) AND we arrived quite stylishly, too - "on the Harley with our matching set of luggage ... four Safeway plastic grocery bags" :R :B lol
ANYHOW - as to the utility trailer.
Seems there are would-be-thieves-afoot-in-Yosemite (and I don't mean bears)!!
Yes - someone tried to steal it!! And it was parked right by the Ranger Hut. However of course it is NOT MANNED 24 hrs a day.
So what the attempted thieves did was to try to take off the hitch extension because my husband had padlocked the ball cover (sorry I'm not good with all the lingo). They succeeded in removing two of the nuts from ONE of the tiedowns(?). BUT they couldn't get the nuts off the second one - because it was JAMMED when we "caught the CREST of a service station exit which was incredibly HIGH" :h And the only way to get them off is to CUT them off (hmmm my dear Aunt always used to say that everything happens for a reason)!
So a heads up that there ARE 2 legged THIEVES working Yosemite. :? Be sure to keep your rigs, utility trailers, and toys LOCKED.

RE: UPDATE - Expect the Unexpected!

sleepy -
could it be that TC people are just naturally hardier :B
perchance our ancestors were TRAIL BLAZING pioneers ...
bobndot -
After chatting with quite a few Rangers at various National Parks & Monuments - I get the impression that many are actually "migratory birds" ... following the jobs with the changing seasons and according to seniority. Perhaps some gain enough senior staus to stay at one park for most of their career - but quite a few seem to be pretty "transient" (at least the ones we've talked to at the Federal Parks we've visited?)
However, the two up at the CG Station, were we inquired about whether it would be alright to leave our trailer until we could get back to pick it up, were very sympathetic to our plight and readily gave us permission (as long as it was well off the road).
In this case, the AAA DRIVER (STEVE with the Sonora AAA tow service) AND the DISPATCHER were the life-savers in not only calling around to find us a room for a Friday nt - but then the driver actually made a point of STOPPING at the hotel so that we could "unload" as much stuff as we needed. He even expertly backed the towed TC right around the corner & up a hill to the back of the hotel and positioned it right in front of our door!! WOW (and this as a storm was quickly moving in.) Anyway thank heavens we didn't have to deal with ANY of those extra headaches.

RE: UPDATE - Expect the Unexpected!

Thanks Buzzcut - I'll pass that info along.
spacedoutbob - I'm not sure what the transmission is. It's a 2000 F350 7.3 PSD 4x4. So we'll have to double check that. Thanks for the heads up.
mooring product - :E not only would our truck have burned up ... but our CAMPER along with it!! I guess the perspective is that things could always be worse ... And we were also thankful that it didn't go out - COMING DOWN HWY 120!!!
SoCal - I'm glad you commented. In retrospect, we're pretty sure that the transmission was beginning to go out while we coming from Manzanita Lake thru Lassen NP, and all the way down Hwy 49 to Yosemite Valley. My husband had checked the transmission fluid before we left home, but when he checked it again at Upper Pines - it was low. So when we took the Harley up over Tioga Pass, we stopped in Lee Vining and bought two more quarts. (One to bring it up to Full and one spare.)
As it turned out - our truck had only a small pan rather than a LARGE pan. So instead of having some opportunity to cool off while circulating - the transmission fluid just continued to run HOT. Now I don't know whether the larger/deeper pans were available back in 1999/2000 for the Fords ... or if "coming from the land of perpetual rain, where a 90 degree day is one for the record books" - they didn't even THINK of "offering a bigger pan". At any rate - it's unfortunate that when we had the tranny serviced a few years back - that they didn't at least mention the option then!! We definitely would have gone for the upgrade.
$370 now - but well worth it.

RE: UPDATE YAY! got the Frig restarted!!

sleepy -
Thank you for your kind advice. (I'm feeling a little beat up here. And increasing stress is beginning to make me a bit cranky:R)
Your suggestion goes along with one of our thoughts. Seeing as how we've managed to "eat up most of our refigerator/freezer stock" while we've been unexpectedly layed over. We were kicking around just buying a bag of ice & a cooler to get home with, as we only have a few things left that need to be "refrigerated"!!
So we might go ahead & do that and then wait til we finally get home (when the camper is perfectly LEVEL:R) and had a good chance to "get all shook up" to try the RESTART one more time.
But I have a feeling that we'll have to go ejmorgan's route ...
That's what I love about the Forums. There is ALWAYS good folks out there who have helpful advice to offer a fellow RVer in need. :C
A HUGE Thanks to All. And hope to see EVERYONE on the road sometime.

RE: UPDATE YAY! got the Frig restarted!!

I think the point is if you keep having the fault code you have an issue that needs to be taken care of. Either the fridge has a problem or the operator is doing it wrong. Trying to run it while way out of level is a good example of the second one.
I noticed in your other post that you tried AC after it didn't work on gas. The fridge needs to be level (or nearly so) in order for gravity to circulate the coolant. Whether the heat source is gas or AC doesn't change that.
wnjj - an interesting comment ...
We honestly don't make it a point to go around "camping" at a 45+ angle. And we were undoubtedly not thinking too clearly at the time - after just witnessing our transmission have a major melt-down!!
Yes we are aware that the RV frigs don't work very well when "unlevel" - although WE'VE never experienced the situation before ourselves. So as you pointed out - it was merely a lesson in futility (or foolishness) to try AC even though it would not run on LPG!! :S
We then SHUT it off.
AND did not attempt to RESTART until the Camper was LEVEL again. Hence the NEW post.
But thank you for your reply anyway. Maybe it will help someone else down the road ... you never know
... until it happens to you.
Cheers,

RE: UPDATE - Expect the Unexpected!

UPDATE
Good News - Bad News ... or UH OH - BACK TO THE SHOP!
Late yesterday afternoon we got the call from the Sonora Ford Dealer that our truck was ready!! They were able to get a rebuilt tranny out of Sacramento with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty.
Oh happy days :B
We picked up the truck (with the camper off loaded at the Ford Dealers) and headed out to pick up our utility trailer up at Crane Flat CG in Yosemite (more on that a little later).
We were thrilled and amazed at how QUIET the new diesel tranny was as compared to our old 2000 (which you had to wear earplugs just to hear yourself think :R). Everything was going smoothly.
We hitched up the trailer. No problems. And set off to retrace our route back down Hwy 120 to Sonora.
UH OH
Almost immediately the tranny started to balk at shifting itself up and drag its feet at shifting itself down!! :E (The utility trailer is a 14' aluminum HaulMark and was empty. Shouldn't have had any trouble at all at any rate.)
We pulled over at the first opportunity and double checked to make sure that they actually put fluid in the new transmission?! Yep - it was full.
At first we thought that it needed to be reprogrammed or adjusted. But honestly, we don't know what to think any more. So we pretty much coasted downhill for most of the way. And made it back to the Dealership!!
LEFT IT THERE AGAIN ... and are at least thankful that we didn't have the CAMPER on AND towing the Harley down from Yosemite!!
Still here in Angels Camp,

UPDATE YAY! got the Frig restarted!!

If you've read my first posting "Expect the Unexpected" you know that our transmission died up at Yosemite and that our frig refused to run at a 45+ degree angle ...
OK - we got the camper off the truck at the Ford Dealership in Sonora and it's now level (in their back parking lot).
So we turned the propane back on and attempted to restart the frig, which is a 3 way Norcold. NOPE - it doesn't want to run on LPG. We lit a stove burner to bleed any air out of the line. Doubled checked the propane tanks & connection. STILL A NO GO.
We fired up the genny and tried it on AC. ANOTHER NO.
The fault code says "co no"
We dug out the manual and found the info on fault codes.
It seems we used up our ONE AND ONLY RESET some time back ... and NOW apparently our ONLY recourse is to have it "serviced by an authorized dealer" :E (or something along those lines) sheesh ONE RESET?! come on - how stingy is that :?
"co no" = cooling unit not working
We even took off the outside plates and took a long hard look. But didn't see anything that we could do ourselves. So we put them back on ... and are now debating our options.
Remember the old saying that goes "When it rains, it pours"?
Well, I also have to UPDATE the "UNEXPECTED POST" :p

RE: Wet Bath Shower Floor Question

For a wet bath - if the rubber BATHTUB mat is too big - get a KITCHEN SINK MAT which is smaller instead. (made by Rubbermaid, etc.)
We've had ours for seven years now and still looks good & works great. When it gets dirty - simply rinse off, shake, and put it back. If it gets really dirty - just use a little "dish soap":W & elbow grease.
The nice thing is that you can leave it in ALL the time. Don't have to take your shoes off or take it out when you shower. Don't have to worry about it getting WET or icky moldy ... or having to WASH & dry it when it gets dirty.
It helps keep your feet & socks dry and your floor clean & protected. The weight of it keeps it from slipping & sliding around.
... Or you could cut a rubber bathtub mat to fit. But I would definitely go with something RUBBER rather than cloth.
For the countertop - we cut a piece of that "gripper stuff" to fit what counter space there is in a wet bath. Again you don't have to worry about it getting WET. AND we find that both the shaving kit & my small case RIDE okay. I arranged it so that it fits up a bit around the walls - so maybe a little extra grip. I snug my husband's shave kit into the corner and his has NEVER bounced off (knock on wood). I don't recall that my smaller case has either! (However the medicine cabinet is another matter. Even WITH the gripper stuff on the shelves - it's always a SURPRISE to open the cabinet door and stuff STILL comes tumbling out :P)

UPDATE - Expect the Unexpected!

... or so the old saying goes. But how does one truly go about anticipating that which is unexpected?! Perhaps "y'all just gotta go with the flow" or "roll with the punches" would be more appropo when you're out there traveling about on the road far from home.
For the past 7 years, I've followed along & empathized with fellow TCers & other RVers here when yall have encountered those "unexpected situations" ... thinking gee that could have been any of us!!
Well now I find that it's my turn to share The Dreaded Tale of UH OH.
After spending 4 awesome days seeing all the sights in & around Yosemite - we were moving down from Upper Pines to Crane Flat CG last Thursday afternoon. Pulling into a tighter site than expected with the utility trailer - we were backing UP to get a better swing angle around the TREES. (Whoever writes those Site Descriptions must have been 1) a travel brochure writer in a past life and 2) never camped a day in their life ... with anything bigger than a tent :h Yes, we FIT. However as WE all know, TCs along with OTHER RVs are TALL and of course merely trimming the trees & branches to truck cab height doesn't mean that we're not going to do some UNEXPECTED pruning as well!! But I digress.)
So the DH is backing hard uphill with at least a 45 degree slope while I'm out spotting - when hmmm what IS all that stuff running out from under the truck?! Hopefully, I suggest that it's merely water from the AC? More skeptically, the DH pokes a finger in a BIG puddle - and upon closer inspection, determines that it's TRANSMISSION FLUID!! UH OH
And while we're checking to see if we're at least off the road with the tail end of the utility trailer. A large PUFF of smoke billows from under the hood of the truck. UH OH - THAT'S NOT GOOD!! Then the DREADED STINKY SMELL wafts back over us. UH OH THAT'S REALLY NOT GOOD.
Yep - our transmission is cooked ...
What to do?
We decide that we may as well spend the night at Crane Flat and get up at the crack of dawn to call AAA. No use to arrive Wherever after dark and have to scramble for a place to stay?! (Did I mention that we're traveling with a huge pooch :Z & a sweet little kitty!!)
Now most of you know that 45+ degree angles give RV reefers hissy fits. And ours was no exception. We even tried switching it to AC with the genset BUT NOOOO - it just kept blinking & BEEPING away - until we finally had to throw in the towel and turn it off.
Also since sleeping on our heads, wasn't too appealing, I remade the bed in the waning hours of dusk - and then slept fitfully - worrying about what "tomorrow was going to bring" (despite our best efforts to NOT worry. Upon reflection - I think a body is in some state of shock.)
BUT at least - 100 miles of towing coverage with AAA was some comfort. Of course, is anything ever that easy?!
1) Yosemite's insurance doesn't allow them to tow "outside the park". 2) Big Oak Flat doesn't have anyone with a commercial license to tow anything that HEAVY. 3) FINALLY - yay Steve at the AAA towing out of Sonora to the rescue (for more on that part of the story you can read it here on the Open Roads Forums if you're interested.)
OK - as it also turns out - our AAA coverage will ONLY tow the utility trailer to their NEAREST STORAGE facility ... UNLESS you want to PAY to have it towed along with your RV. Hmm 75 miles PLUS from the time the tow leaves his shop to the TIME OF DROP-OFF vs at least $50 A DAY back up at Yosemite Village!! :E But EVEN IF we have it towed to the Ford Dealership in Sonora - would there be a place to store it there?!
What to do? What to do ...
While we're waiting for over 2 & 1/2 hrs for the TruckCamper tow - we decide to ride down (with the help of a Yosemite garbage guy, we managed to get the BIG Harley unloaded from the trailer - pushing it UP the 45+ degree site slope YIKES!!) and chat with the Ranger at the CG entrance.
Soooo - if you happen to see a HaulMark utility trailer parked forlornly on the side of the entrance road up at Crane Flat CG - that would be ours!! Hopefully it will still be there by THURS/FRI when the Ford Dealership THINKS they may have the truck's NEW TRANSMISSION done?! (Does anyone know anything good or bad about the Sonora Ford Dealership?? We didn't really have too much choice.)
So now that I've written a book - that about sums up "Mr. & Mrs. Boomer's Tale of the Unexpected ... or more aptly titled UH OH - THAT'S NOT GOOD".
Thanks for following along. Please feel free to digress (heaven knows I do more often than not :R) The DH is out panning for gold - although it's a sure bet that he won't find enough to cover the new tranny (but at least he/we are having fun, while we're stranded. And hey - we still have TWO wheels. Tomorrow we're off to Murphys & the Wineries and Mercer Caverns :B Today we went up to Columbia State Historical Park and Mark Twain's cabin (the latter NOT reccommended for RVs).
I actually do have some pixs - but they will have to wait as I don't have a way to download them here.
Cheers to All.

RE: Generator size?

It really does depend on the size of your A/C unit.
The bigger the model - generally the larger genset will be needed.
We can run our SMALL air conditioner with the Honda 2000. BUT as others have already pointed out - we can't run the A/C AND the microwave at the same time. Also our microwave draws a bigger initial power surge than our A/C - and it will trip the generator sometimes if it's set on econo mode.
Ditto on running the frig and water heater on propane unless we're on shore power. You would be burning that much more gasoline to run them with the generator. If you're worried about running out of propane - we always top our tanks off if we're going to be boondocking or dry camping for any length of time. BUT you can usually find a place to buy propane when you're traveling if needed.
... and no - it's NOT a dumb question :@
Welcome to TCing :C
