RE: Grand Isle State Park , LA , query

The improved RV area is somewhat like a parking lot so all sites are about the same. The park is at the far east of the island kinda off by itself. Nothing special to do. If you want peace and quiet you may well be the only camper there in November. In summary, I live about 100 miles from Grand Isle, have been there a few times for charter boat fishing and have camped in the park once. There is nothing more that I want to go back for. For a visitor like yourself, there is surf fishing and charter boat fishing. It will be a deserted little town in November.

RE: I-20 Birmingham, Alabama

I like the bypass. Wider and better surface.

RE: Wine and Liquor in Utah

There is a problem carrying tobacco and alcohol from any one state to another because of the tax issue. I certainly would not do it with a case or more of each.

RE: Dodged one bullet, looking at another

Thanks to everyone who responded about the 2005 Sightseer I was looking at (78,000 miles). My brother and his mechanic friend had a look at it and said that, while a lot that was wrong was cosmetic (which I knew), they had concerns over the transmission and recommended I pass.
For my future reference, what were their concerns?

RE: Internet access question

My nephew does complete jobs just like that for small businesses. Maybe you can find someone like that near you.

RE: Another test, another GM win

Impressive data, and close, but I travel the South to lower East so it would not, in its enterity, affect my choice.

RE: Battery overflows.

As for the stain, just last weekend I got a lot of printer ink on my hands (why I did is another story). I went thru acetone, lacquer thinner, paint thinner, hand cleaner, 409, and nothing worked. Then I tried full strenth Clorox and right off it came. What I am saying is you may have to try a variety of things. Oh, how about muratic acid that is used to clean bricks after a new job?

RE: A/C is sooo Loud

Yep, the combo of compressor and blower just over your head is loud. Still better than staying at home all the time.

RE: 5th wheel or class A HELP!!!!!

One other thing, if I were to buy a 5th it would have to have a fiberglass or non-rubber roof like my Winnebaga Class A. No rubber roof for me. I have read that non-rubber roofs in a 5th are not available.
OK, I am sure that someone knows of a 5th brand or model that doesn't have a rubber roof.

RE: 5th wheel or class A HELP!!!!!

Here goes my view:
Class A for couple on the move a lot. Stays only a few days to a week or so in one place.
5th wheel for 2 or more and/or that stays in places for 2 or more weeks at a time.
There are other plus and minus but I think the above should govern the decision.
Sounds like you need a 5th (RV not adult refreshment).

RE: Mobile Al to Topsail Hill

You would go an extra 20 miles and 20 minutes but it's a good route. I have been that way coming from the East. You would save the toll and miss a little of the Destin traffic.

RE: Mobile Al to Topsail Hill

On 10 east exit at Hwy 85 (exit 56)
Go south to Florida 20 in Niceville turn left. Get in Center lane as far right will become a forced right turn lane.
Continue to the Midbay Bridge Turn Right and cross the bridge (toll bridge)
Once on Destin turn left and proceed to Topsail Hill
That's the way. I have tried them all and it's the best. Just be prepared for, IMHO, a large toll.

Deep cycle battery question

True deep cycle batteries like Trojan have no cranking rating. But my generator is started by my coach batteries. Would this damage true deep cycle batteries?

RE: Hot Springs Arkansas Area

I have been to Quachita SP a few years ago. Was going east on I-40 when I got off at Hwy 7. There is one short steep hairpin just before Quachita SP. Went up in 1st gear at 10-15 mph in the Class A. Don't remember any other outstanding curves or grades.
I will be going to Lake Catherine SP in the first of November. Never been there before. Will sightsee what there is in Hot Springs.

RE: Installing new outlets?

Yes, I feel your pain. I use what I have and use extension cords and/or lengthen appliance cords. I would not attempt to tear into an RV wall like it was a house wall; and I do electrical work!

RE: Towing with Camry or Matrix

My first RV was a PUP a number of decades ago. It was nothing but a metal box on wheels with beds that pulled out and canvas held up by fold-up metal poles. Nothing, zip, zero, inside but it was LIGHT. Don't know if something like that is still available. So start looking as small a PUP as you can find and work up to the rated weight of your Camry.
But do you really want to give up your cooking, refridgeration, shower, bathroom, etc conveniences?

RE: Golf carts

I live in Louisiana and have RVed for 7 years now and never saw a golf cart in a campground. Ok yeah, I only go to state parks. And thankfully any vehicle on a campground road has to be licensed for the highway.

RE: is the 'extra' maintenance the dealer pushes important?

Twice (different cars, different dealers) I had my wife take a car in for some siimple maintenance and she came back with a $$$ bill for xx,xxx mile service. Both times it was a "mistake" they said "but it needed it anyway". Both times I made them take off the charges that I did not authorize. They must think some folks will pay anyway.

RE: Michellin Tires

The only Michelin dealer near me was very unresponsive when I wanted to replace the XRVs on my P30. I went with Sumitomo and got a great price and (IMO) a better tire. It's an all steel radial truck tire. It has a real deep rubber tread and it is regroveable. No, I won't wear the rubber out but that is some indication of how tough the tire is. I feel that I have better blowout protection than with the XRV.

RE: What happened to friendly RVers who you pass on the road?

In my Class A on two lane roads, I am so intently watching the road and traffic that I don't ever have a chance to really zoom in on an aproaching RV driver, much less manage a wave.
I find two land roads much more dangerous that interstate because of the intersections, drives, parking lots, etc. My A does not stop anything like my truck for unexpected things. Trying to keep the speed up to 55 and being able to stop unexpectedly is a full time job for me.
