I had my engine battery out for several days in our 2005 Sightseer. No problemz when I put a new one in.

RE: Boondocking pet peeves, I really hate it when...

Yup.. no brainer... obnoxious company nearby.
I enjoy having most types of people around. But, I do appreciate them being respectfull of the solitude boondocking offers. Conversation around a fire is perfectly fine - loud boomboxes with rap music and yelling kids is not.

RE: Class A motor home vs. car for trip out west

I've been out West multiple times. I'll tell you, there is nothing like staying in one of the parks (Rocky Mountain, Arches, Grand Tetons, etc), sitting out under the stars at night with a campfire, and just relaxing in a clean bed (no bed-bugs) ..... that, for me, is more than worth the price of gas to bring my home-on-wheels out West.

RE: First Time With No Hookups...

We probably dry camp 3 or 4 times for every time we camp with hookups (which means just electricity for us - we rarely use campground water/sewer). When we had a single 12v battery we experienced just what you did: dead in the morning when the heat was left on.
We made some changes:
1) replaced the frequently used interior lights with LED lights. Major power savings. No need to try to "economize" on light usage with LEDs.
2) Set furnace about 45 degrees. It usually won't come on at all unless we're camping in the late Fall when below freezing is typical. When I get up in the morning, I just up it to 70 degrees and by the time I've shaved and done my bathroom thing, the RV is pretty comfortable. This fan is the major power draw from the batteries so use it as little as possible.
3) Charging the batteries - without hookups we depend upon our generator to charge the battery bank (I have two 6 volt golf cart batteries from Sams Club hooked in series for about 220 amp-hrs). I wish I had solar but, not yet. Instead the generator runs for 4 to 5 hrs which is enough to put charge back into the batteries.
4) Sit outside watching the stars around a campfire until the fire dies down rather than inside with the furnace on watching TV. Or, better yet, do a flash-light walk through the dark park with your honey. Oh.. I love camping!

RE: Does spilled Dextron III evaporate?

Thanks All! Enjoyed the story about the Cat! I think haddy1 figured it out. I checked my fuel tank on a warm moist day after a cold night. You're right, that can generate a lot of condensation!

RE: Why did it take 1.5 hours & three operators?

I've been very happy with Coach Net (only needed them once, but they really performed extremely well in that situation).
I'm glad to see the Good Sam representative monitoring this forum and trying to improve customer's perceptions of his employeer.... it is good to have competition...keeps our prices low!

RE: Best coverage, AT&T/Verizon?

Consider getting a Verizon MiFi. this is about the size of a skinny deck of playing cards. It will connect with the Verizon network (any speeds up to 4G) on one end and broadcasts regular old fashioned WiFi on the other. You can have 4 devices sharing it all at the same time (or is it 5?). You'll get pretty good signal coverage with Verizon too.

How to check fluid level for Kwikee Levelers?

I have the Kwikee hydraulic level system in our 2005 Sightseer. I'd like to check fluid level in the pump. I found the manifold (where all the hydraulic lines terminate - looks like 2 per level jack) hidden in back of the driver's front wheel and just before the first slideout.
If I put my head in the storage bin of the slide closest to the drivers front wheel, I see a tube - about 1" in diameter- angling up from the bottom of the manifold. Tube is about 1" long and appears to have a cap. I was thinking that might be where I would inspect the fluid level. Is it?
If so, there is no way I could get my head in there to see into the tube to determine where the level is. How do people check the fluid level and, if needed, how does one add fluid to the pump?
Also, I presume the correct fluid is Dexron III (according to the Winnebago manual that came with the MH). Does that seem right?
Any advice from those wiser than I would be most appreciated.

Does spilled Dextron III evaporate?

I noticed a "spill" under our Class A about where the driver rear tires are. I thought it might be hydraulic fluid leaking from a Kwikee level jack near the wheel. However, I went to work on it a few days later and the "spill" looks like it evaporated. If I had a leaking hydraulic line, would that have evaporated in a few days?
I also noticed there was a lot of condensation on the gas tank of our MH. If there was a huge amount of condensation, that might have made the puddle. I'd guess the puddle was maybe 3' x 2' in size.
The fluid seemed clear also. Likely water?

RE: Private campgrounds near Yellowstone, Tetons, and Glacier

We wanted peace and quiet when at Yellowstone - and camped at "Henry's Lake State Park" just across the border in Idaho. For us, it was magnificent. Large sites, lovely scenery, good facilities, and about 15 miles or so from Yellowstone's West entrance.
For the Tetons, we camped at Colter Bay Village. Got a great pull-through site right in the pinetrees. Gosh darn it if we didn't extend our time there three times until we just had to get moving on. Tetons are beautiful, good hiking, and go to EACH visitor center. They are all different.

RE: Camp grounds near Pittsburgh, PA

We stayed at Raccoon Creek State Park (about 20-ish miles West of Pittsburgh) for a week and had a fanstatic time. Good sites, facilities, people, and there is a fruit stand down the road selling the best produce.

RE: Fun and Games at Flying J

Just a tip... Get yourself an American Express BLUE CASH card. Buy gas on your card and get a 2% rebate. If gas is $4.00/gallon, that is a 0.08 rebate. Not bad. You'll also get 1% on other purchases.

Good Sam has had this reputation for years (I first heard about it in 2005). This is why any envelope that comes from Good Sam goes straight to the trash.. unopened. I'd think they would be reading this forum and learn about their customer satisfaction issues!

RE: Camping World Poor Customer Service

This is such a frustrating experience for you! And there is no really good solution either.
I'd sure suggest your post your experiences on the www.RVServiceReviews.com website. At the very least let others learn from your unfortunate experiences.
If you are near a big city do they have a TV station that has an investigative reporter? Can you get any assistance from them? Also, if you are an FMCA member, there are examples in their magazine of where they have interceded for people with vendors and gotten a good response.
Good luck! Let us know what happens, ok?

RE: LED bulbs

I agree with RoyB. I noticed incadencent lights were a big battery drain. I bought several LED off eBay and found one that I particularly liked. A 36 led flat panel, warm white, with various sockets, for about $4 each. I then ordered enough to replace all the most frequently used bulbs in the motorhome. It was great! Then, a few months later, I ordered enough to replace the infrequently used bulbs. Two years later, still doing just fine. DW likes the warm white light. I like the brightness. We both like the extended battery life!

RE: Custer State Park, SD campground help

We camped at Game Lodge and it worked fine for us.
You need to go up to the general store and then have dinner at the GameLodge Restaurant. They serve all sorts of wild meat (Bison, Ostrich, Bear, etc). It has a lovely interior and the prices were just fine. The walls are covered with animal heads. It is an unfortetable experience ... and the food was just fantastic!
