RE: GAH Spring Adventure - anyone else going?

I'm Tolsona wilderness rv park tonight. There is one GAH winnie here but I didn't see the people in it. I saw two more GAH rigs headed to Anchorage this afternoon.

RE: GAH Spring Adventure - anyone else going?

I'm headed towards Tok from Anchorage with an overnight near Glennallen in a few hours, I'm driving an old 1978 Itasca with a missing front nose hatch towing a car, so wave if you see me going down the road.

RE: Where to stay on the Kenai Penninsula.

Fred meyer card will now always give 10 cents off, and as you buy stuff the reward can be as much as a dollar, but that is a one time discount based on the accumulated points for the month. You get the Fred Meyer 10 cents at shell stations as well (in Anchorage at least), although I find most shell stations to be higher priced.

RE: Alcan Highway report.

Thanks for the road update, I'll be heading to Tok from Anchorage this morning, although I'm stopping for the day somewhere around Glennallen at an RV park I like. Wave if you see an Old Itasca missing the nose hatch towing a BMW along the road. They re did most of the really bad road last summer between sutton and Glennallen, They were working on the cutoff road right up until it snowed last year, I'm sure they'll be back on that one soon.

RE: Solar Eclipse

We saw up here in Anchorage too. It eas cloudy here but not so cloudy the sun was not visible. With a pair of dark glasses it was visible through the clouds. It was about 3/4 covered here.

RE: Roof Vent Replacement

I had a broken vent this yeartoo, but i accidently stepped on mine shoveling a couple feet of snow off the roof in the dark. Replacing mine was harder though. I have the luck of having an Itasca (Winnabago) an old one at that. So the vents are not standard size and not readily available and not cheap. So I bought a new vent had had to modify the hole in the roof a bit to install it. Hopefulky you have a standard size vent and not a custom sized bramd specific one....

RE: Motorhome Insurance

I have USAA for my cars and they passed me on to progessive for RVcoverage. I have no complaints about progressive through the USAA general agency. I don't know if the rates are cheaper that route, but my insurance is cheap enough.

RE: ros and cons of Tow Doly

No one has pointed out the biggest con....the rear tires are the road and the front tires are not. This wears out rear tires faster, which means more frequent rotation, or if yojr car is like mine and runs staggered tires you get to buy more rear tires more often. Mine cannot be towed 4 down (BMW M3 1998) but can be dollied (99+ must be trailored) i hope to aquire a trailer someday but they are spendy. I only tow my car to autocrosses, but two of them are 700 mile round trips.... I just got a short rv so I can just drive it whereever i need to go so I dont have to drag a car with me everywhere I go...

RE: Arctic Circle Tour?

Kotzebue is neat place I spent a lot of time there when I worked for the state, here is a picture of me fishing in the ocean(chukchi sea of the Arctic Ocean) in 2002, which was my first trip to Kotz. They actually made fun of my fisihng pole because it was so small....I later discvered why, most of the sheefish that come out of there are huge, they told me to throw back the baby 5 pound fish I caught, I ate it anyway it was good. In 2004 I got a 42 inch sheefish ice fishing that thing was a monster and I caught it with a jig tied to a nylon rope that was tied to a stick....who needs a fancy pole for ice fishing....I lost all my 2003-2004 pictures when my hard drive croaked a few years ago. Red Dog mine is a neat place as well but I don't think you can just go there for a visit. The best part of a circle trip is watching the sun do the freaky around the sky circle without ever going down, but you would need to stay up there all night to see that happen. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q267/jshickman/RV%20photos/d3f2ea55.jpg

RE: What did you do to your Class A MH today???

I kicked the last of the ice away from the side facing the street...I also purchaced a new restroom vent since I stepped through the one that was on there since I didn't know exactly where it was while I was shoveling snow off of it this winter, the fan didn't work on it anyway....I also got a new China potty since the the 32 year galaxy original toilet wasn't working right. I'm going to attempt to dewinterize it this week as well since it's right at or slightly above freezing at night and I'm seeing more and more RVS moving around everyday, I want to go camping badly.

RE: Gas Stops - Good Sam Alaska Caraventure

I drove in my at the time 29 year old car down to the lower 48 a few summers ago, and only had to sweat a few times looking for gas (my car barely gets 200 miles to a tank at 20 mpg) but it was early May and not every gas station was open yet. When I came back in early June it was no problem at all finding gas in less than 200 mile intervals as all the road houses and other stops inbetween the towns were open.

RE: Date is set ... sort of

It's been in the 40s the past week here in Anchorage, there's only about 4 feet of snow left in the yard. I can't wait to drag out my RV and go somewhere in the next few weeks if the snow bank encasing it ever melts. Parts of Alaksa had record winters for snow fall this year so spring may come late this year since the snow will take longer to melt. Have fun and enjoy the drive. I took this photo a couple weeks ago in Anchorage right before it started to melt, we have lots of snow still... http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q267/jshickman/e85af36a.jpg

RE: WiFi router on a timer

My netgear router has a button on it that kills all wireless internet without unplugging it (this is also handy if you want to secure your internet while your on vacation), and I can restrict ip address or set up schedules for various Ips. I have a few years left before I worry about this, my son is only 5 and hasn't figured out the internet yet. When the time comes the kid access computer will be in the basement where outside unsecured wifi access is completley blocked. The earth makes a great wifi barrier, so much so I have to run a repeater upstairs to get all the idevices and the RV out front covered by the wifi in the basement.

RE: Williwaw Campground AK

I ususally head to Willawaw or Black bear when I want a quick get away almost out of town. Believe it or not Portage Valley is actually still inside the city limits of Anchorage just barely... Here is one at portage valley a couple of years ago now. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q267/jshickman/RV%20photos/fbe1e5e9.jpg Exit Glacier in Seward is impressive as well. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q267/jshickman/Seward/IMG_2812.jpg Enjoy ypur trip, and have fun along the way.

RE: How do you sanitize tanks in spring?

You want to keep your water at around 50 ppm of bleach for sanitizing. Any more than that and your wasting bleach and risking leaving behind a bad taste and a toxic residue. 50 ppm is about 1 teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water,or about one capfull of a regular sized bleach bottle (not costco sized bleach bottle). A restaurant uses 50 ppm to sanitize dishes, mobile food trucks sanitize their tanks with 50 ppm bleach as well. you don't have to let it sit overnight either 2 hours is long enough to be effective. Be carefull using dichlor or trichlor in an enclosed environment it can off gas Cyanide, which isn't a problem in an outdoor pool, but dangerous in an indoor one (or a water tank), which is one reason why it's banned up here for use in pools since all of ours are indoors. As a health inspector I have a lot of expierence making sure other people sanitize things correctly from dishes, to water tanks, to pools....

RE: Discount for online purchases

I dont think it really matters what item you pick amazon will likely always beat your prices since they ship for free and you do not. Amazon even ships free to Alaska, and you guys charge extra to ship here. So even if you are a few dollars cheaper amazon gets you on the shipping making the overall purchace cheaper. I used a comparison of a Bravura toilet in another thread. The toilet is cheaper on amazon and free shipping. Camping world charges an extra $5.00 oversized shipping fee on top of the regular shipping fee, which is more to Alaska that elsewhere.

RE: I love CW, but...

Even if you did ship to Alaska, I think the price point would make the average person shop and then buy from the lowest price store. What kills me is we get charged second day air most of the time when there is no need for it. UPS now has ground service here, but convincing people it really exists is impossible. allot of us are even willing to wait for parcel post from USPS, but then we hear the post office sucks to file a claim with for insurance when they break it... It could be cheaper to ship here if they wanted it to be I guess that is why we use amazon, they ship for free to here and have almost everything.

RE: I love CW, but...

Friends, I went online for a few minutes to do some comparisons and I am really struggling to find real variances. I will tell you what I would love however. I would really get a great deal of value if some of you would help with doing some site visits for me. We are always trying to get better at everything we do. I would love to use this forum to learn from all of you about everything. I have a quick example. I got to visit a store last fall near San Francisco and I like the selection and would love to shop here. My issue is I live just past the end of earth in Alaska. I need a new toilet since my 30+ year old galaxy toilet has had it. I can buy a bravura replacement in Anchorage at my local rv store for $265.00. Camping world has it on sale for $228.79 plus $5.00 extra shipping and some unknown amount of shipping cost since you have no calculator to tell me what it will cost it looks like I have to get to a checkout screen to see what shipping will cost. I look in the shipping policy and it has charges by weight. I have no idea how much the toilet weighs but it must be heavy since there is a 5 dollar extra charge to ship it. Then I see the clause 48 states only so the chart is useless for Alaska. So I then go somewhere else to shop and am actually upset that I wasted 10 mins trying to find out what shipping will cost . Amazon has it for $203.38 with free shipping even to Alaska. Who will I buy from? Not camping world.

It's 8 degrees right now I don't think spring is coming ever. On the other hand the northern lights are incredible right now.
