RE: Wilson RV Cell Phone Booster

Has anyone pieced together a Wilson amplifier kit, we are looking to boost our cell phone signal and internet using the dual band amplifier 801245? Leo's looking at the 841295 Ambulance RV Kit but maybe you might have some suggestions, if you have put one in..
Thanks
Trying to stay on topic and answer your original question....
I have used that exact model for a few years with a flat panel interior antenna and an external Wilson Truckers antenna. The external antenna is mounted to the railing on the roof of the RV via a stainless steel boat railing mount which folds back for travel.
In extremely remote locations, I take 3 10' sections of galvanized chain link fence top rail pipe and connect them together. A yagi directional antenna is mounted to the pipe and the whole assembly goes in the flagpole mount I have on my rear ladder. With that setup, I have been successful in obtaining a signal from as far as 27 miles away.
I am using a Verizon aircard and AT&T cell phones. It amplifies both signals simultaneously.
Much more detailed info HERE.

RE: Puncture precautions - what do you do?

Here is a question for those of you who regularly travel way off the black-top (and therefore away from roadside assistance services) with their campers:
Steve.
In the Brush Country of South Texas, it is 10ply tires (load range E) and 2 spares.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Yes, a gate guard is working. You would be helping get campers checked in and out. Usually they won't ask you to clean the laundry room or latrines though so that's a bonus. Been stuck with some pretty nasty jobs in the past. Got away from workamping. It's not for me but I talk to just about everyone when we're out and most folks seem to love it.
LOL. :S Could you imagine the workcamper at the local Jellystone waking up one morning to see what we normally see parked outside the gate?

Yeah, I read most of it-looks like we're getting an EOG gate down here, so I hope it works out for us. Don't know where to get FRC's but they can't be hard to find.
They are damned expensive. Wall Outlet was the cheapest in the Metroplex . Carharrt also makes FRC gear.Jeans and a t shirt for Kath, coveralls for me were $171 on sale at their Outlet.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Okay.... this week I have called our service man 3 times, he told me he would be here tomorrow each time. Well here it is Friday I am down to a little under 10 gal of desiel. He told me yesterday he would be here this morning early with desiel, water and weed eat the weeds to keep snakes out. So far no one has showed up, I am really getting tired of being way out here in nowhere land and not being taken care of. I am about ready to call Jay and let him know the type of service we get.
I have been reading each and every message and thought it was time to chime in since we now have quite a bit of time on the books with GGS.
We have not met a service guy yet that does not work his butt off 6-7 days a week sometimes trying to satisfy all of our 'demands'. Just by the nature of the business, their whole schedule can be thrown off by one phone call. Something like an emergency with a down generator, a rush-rush new set up or somebody suddenly discovering they are completely out of water or fuel is enough to disrupt their whole day. A phone call like that will push everyone else back in the schedule. Sure, some guys are better than others but they all work HARD from what I have observed.....
We always seem to get assignments that are a good ways from the closest yard ( We are 335 miles west of Carrizo Springs on this assignment) -- maybe Roger doesn't like us so much???? :) Being this far from the yard comes with some additional considerations as far as service. I think they would probably apply in most cases even if you are 5 miles from the yard.
When fluids are getting low, I call 48 hours prior to entering the critical zone just to give them a heads up.
I insist on spare fuel lines, belts, filters being available for the generator. I do not mind doing an emergency minor repair. If you are not mechanically inclined, just skip this step.
I keep 2 5 gallon fuel cans full of diesel on the generator trailer which belong to me. In a pinch, they will extend my generator run time 1 day+ and the service guy can refill them his next time out. If I don't need them, I can dump them in the MH tank when we move locations and re-fill them at some point to keep the fuel fresh.
I make contact with every vendor delivering supplies to the rig as I am sure everyone else does. It takes ONE extra step to ask them if I had an emergency where my service guy could not make it out for several days --could they help out? All of them said a splash of diesel or some potable water would not be a problem.
The rig has adequate supplies of both diesel and water. In a real pinch, I am sure the Company many would send someone down with 50 gal of diesel or 100 gal of water. This is NOT something I would ask for unless we were really in a bind as it reflects poorly on the way I (and GGS) do business.
I joke with the service guy and my supervisor about me calling them... I tell them if they ever get a call from me outside of the normal service window heads up type call, they better be dialing 911 for me next because it is a serious emergency! :)
Face it, many of us are in fairly remote locations and the logistics of supplying all of our needs must be formidable. Just by the nature of our jobs, I think some resilience and resourcefulness is called for on our parts as part of the job.
Just remember-- this job doesn't suit everybody.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Anybody working for EOG out there? Has anyone heard what their gates are like. Don't need specifics-just how the work experience was.
Mark,
Most of my blog entries from last year were from an EOG gate. We liked all of the EOG guys and the way they did business. This was all up in the Barnett Shale. I would work for them again without hesitation UNLESS it was their new program where you are attached to a frac crew and follow them from pad to pad.

RE: Gate Guard & Taxes

I know this can be a touchy subject, but I would like some input from the more experienced gate guards. I do not have a regular CPA or Tax Advisor so I would like to know some of the reliable people that you use.
Honest advice so far but not a single tax professional has responded. I do NOT fool around when it comes to the IRS; they take their business very seriously.
I have enlisted the help of a real CPA who also just happens to have an MBA in Tax Accounting. She is answering questions and helping out Gate Guards and RVers in this forum:

............Understand , No ONE , with any sense is going too comeout and provide a listing of the UNdesirable companies and their poor managenment and attitude practices !!! That information should be conveyed through private messaging .
I guess that would be a 'Well, it depends.'
If I have actual first hand experience which I know to be true and factual, I have no problem reporting those facts in a Public Forum where it will get as much exposure as possible. It could be a scam, an unscrupulous RV dealer, repair shop or gate guard company.

RE: LP GENERATORS

Of course the disadvantage of propane is that it is virtually impossible to find a place that refills bottles. Exchanges are the only way to get propane in my part of Texas.
Heartily DISAGREE. After almost 5 years of boondocking all over Texas, refilling my external tanks has never been a problem. Sometimes it is the local hardware store, sometimes it is the RV park or the propane jobber for the area or the welding supply or in one case, an auto repair facility but there is always someplace to refill if you look.

RE: LP GENERATORS

Are you having a problem with the generator, or just not turning on both tanks at once gives you "Cause" for thinking the generator is somehow broken or using to much gas?
LP gas generators are not really highly recommended by those who own them. It does take a really large LP supply to run one for a few hours. Also LP gas only has 95,000 Btu's per gallon, while gasoline is 115,000 Btu's per gallon.
Let's clear some things up here. I have 3 generators that I run quite often. A 12.5kw Perkins diesel that runs 24/7 --running outside right now as we speak since we are working off grid completely. A 7kw Onan as a backup. The one on the RV is a 6.6kw Generac propane generator. It is 19 years old and has about 2k hours on it. Would I buy a propane generator again? Obviously not.
With that said, your problem is the surface area on the 30lb tanks is simply too small to feed the generator when you add the additional requirements of the furnace. If your problems have manifested themselves this winter during the cold weather they may go away when it gets warmer as the gas converts more easily to gaseous form when it is warm. Another thing to think about is when the weather does warm up, there will be no need for the furnace and your problem will go away.
Propane has multiple advantages over other fuels for an RV generator. Most RV generators are run only a few hours each year especially if it is on a trailer or fiver. Most folks with coaches accumulate the majority of their generator hours driving down the road with the roof AC on in the summer. Since most of us don't use the generator often, propane is a desirable fuel because it does not degrade over time. No gummed up carbs or fuel lines etc.
While propane does not produce the btus other fuels do, it is also cheaper. Last week, I purchased propane at $2.82 a gallon--which I thought was high. My generator uses .6 gal/hr at 70% load. A 40lb tank will run the generator approx 18 hrs straight.
Propane generators produce less deadly CO than a gasoline or diesel generator. Mostly, the byproduct of combustion is CO2 and H20. Some folks think the propane generators do not produce CO at all which is simply not true. A small amount of the deadly gas is produced during combustion.
Lastly, propane fuel is wonderful for the longevity of the equipment. It burns clean and produces less wear on internal components.
If you simply MUST find a solution to the problem ---other than simply running both tanks open at the same time, I would look at two things. Perhaps it would run better on a 40lb tank? while the surface area of all vertical tanks is identical, the larger tanks have higher pressure for a more sustained period of time. The only time I have had a problem with fuel supply on mine is when it was VERY cold outside, the tanks got low on fuel or I tried to use a 20lb bbq tank to feed it.
I would also look to see if a horizontal tank would work. They have more surface area because they are laying on their side.
A conversion to gasoline fuel would not even be on my radar.
Hope this helps....

RE: Cell amps and antennas

Texan,
We have been using one of the Wilson SOHO amps with a wireless indoor antenna for several years now with good results. It will amplify multiple cell phones or laptops with the addition of a wireless router.
Wilson service after the sale is beyond reproach.
