RE: AC

I would just park next to a light pole in the Wal-Martand tie into the power there. just a thought!
Isn't that "stealing" electricity, unless you have permission from WalMart management??? Also, unless there is an electrical outlet on the light pole, (which there usually isn't) how does one "tie in" to the light pole??

RE: Generator Selection Problem

So< Now I guess the big question's are will 2x2000 Hondas run a 15000 BTU A/C and/or will 2x 2000 Yamahas run a 15000 BTU A/C? Sure am leaning toward the Yamaha with a few extra features ie. fuel gauge and longer run time. Please advise!
No question at all. Either red or blue "2000" models (twins connected in parallel) will run your 15K BTU A/C. My two reds have been running my 15K A/C for 3 years in a row without a hick up! Red or Blue are THE quietest options available on the market today by the way. ....they're also the most $$$ if that's a factor for you.

RE: Generator Selection Problem

3600 Watts is the magic number for an RV with a 15,000 BTU AC.
I don't know anything about "magic," but I do know that RVers have been using twin EU2000 Hondas in parallel for around 10 years now with 15K BTU A/C's. 4000 "peak" watts (30 minute rating per Honda) and 3200 "continuous" watts (until you run outa gas). When starting the A/C, the power surges literally one second. The 4000 watt "surge" rating is more than enough to start a 15K BTU A/C. If one wants to go further, installing a $19.00 Supco "hard start capacitor" on the A/C itself makes starting up even easier.

RE: Generator Selection Problem

Unless one is going to permanently mount the 4500 and doesn't care about the weight, it could only then be an option worth considering for a family camping trip.Using your logic I could say the same of using twin Honda EU2000's. This isn't for me, as I just use battery power and find generators unnecessary except for full timing off grid, long off grid trips where you need to recharge batteries, or hot weather camping. That said, there are people out there that use generators for whatever reasons which I think is the point of this thread. If you need more than an EU3000, I think the Yamaha EF4500 is a better deal than twin Honda's. People mention weight a lot but you're only going to put it in the truck and leave it there while camping. Some leave their much smaller generators in their TV's all the time, why would the Yamaha be any different? And who the hell runs around the campground carrying a generator?
What can you say about twin hondas? The twins combined weigh 100 lbs LESS than the Yamaha 4500. The twin Hondas Combined cost $1,000 LESS than the 4500. The twin Hondas will run a 15k AC as asked by the OP. Many people disconnect their trailer at a campground and leave the generators behind while the tow vehicle goes elsewhere. Lifting a 200lb Yamaha 4500 in/out of the truck and paying $1,000 MORE for something one doesn't need is just..... Just......
..... Yeah, I'll stick with "my" logic on this topic.

RE: Bike Rack

I simple motorhome class III hitch welded to the frame will do the job. Another Passport owner on here (and in SD) has had it done and no problems.
My dealer charges $300 for the hitch and welding.
Provide the ready made hitch and seek welding estimates from a pro. The dealer is about 40% higher cost than a professional welder.

RE: Generator Selection Problem

I'd get the Yamaha EF4500 with 4000W continuous compared to twin Honda EU2000's with only 3200W continuous.
At a couple pounds short of weighing 200lbs and an MSRP at $3,300, why would any RVer want to break their back and bank for that? We're talking about simply running a 15K BTU A/C and a TV, light or stereo, not a swimming pool pump. Unless one is going to permanently mount the 4500 and doesn't care about the weight, it could only then be an option worth considering for a family camping trip.

RE: Generator Selection Problem

Get two small 2000 watt models. With just a heavier 3000 watt model, you can run that AC, but that's about it. We like running the AC and the coffe pot or TV or whatever without having to turn off the AC to run something else.
Plus, if you don't need the AC during the other times in the year, you only need to. Ring the one single 2000 watt genny.
Easy.

RE: Enough Truck?

The Toyota dealer told me that yes, the Tacoma can pull the Jayco, but he wouldn't do it, saying the 26 ft. length was too much.
Yup, I tried it with my Tacoma and a 24' trailer. Didn't work! Sold it that week and bought a bigger truck. ...eventually bought a bigger trailer too.

RE: AC

Things to consider..... Red or blue generators (Honda/Yamaha) are mucho $$$$ yes, but your campground neighbors will be more forgiving with you versus using two or one champion generator.
Ever been in a campground where that "someone" is running a loud generator? Couple that with running it at night????? It's louder at night! Everything is louder at night. It sure makes for "hating" your camping neighbor that much more! So much for a nice relaxing quiet camp spot in my opinion!
I told my friends and family that if they want to buy an RV (or trailer), that they SHOULD consider the total purchase price of the trailer to INCLUDE an additional "investment" of adding a top quality (and quiet) generator(s).
There's nothing more frustrating than hearing a camp neighbor running his "lawn mower" next to you while you're trying to hear......peace & quiet.
Out by yourself in the boondocks, well anything goes. Everywhere else, "camp neighborly."

RE: Bike Rack

Fortunately for me, I have several welders in my metal fab shop (at home garage). I welded a small hitch receiver to my trailer frame and made a simple bike rack that easily slides into the receiver. I would NEVER try to muscle bikes up and down, on or off the roof of the trailer. Too much hassle and dangerous.
I recommend you find a welder and tell him what you want to do. It's a very easy install that takes just a couple of hours of fabrication for a custom bike rack and custom receiver.
Now if you weld a "store bought" pre-fabbed bicycle hitch receiver to a trailer frame, that can be done in less than 10 minutes. For what it's worth, during "welding," 90% of the time and labor is spent "prepping" the metal, while 8% of the time is actual weldIng the pieces together. (2% of the remaining time is drinking beer).
If you buy a pre fabbed bike type hitch receiver and give that to the welder, he can have you up and running in less than 30 minutes. Plus your labor costs will be lower by providing the hitch receiver itself. The welder will still have to weld up the proper cross beams for that receiver however and that is simple!

RE: Portable campfire for the space-challenged

I've made two before, then again I have my own metal fabrication shop in my garage at home. If you know a little about welding, you could make your own super cheap. I do not have any pictures of the two I made for friends over the years. I wish I did have the photos.

RE: Which generator should I get?

Just kidding.... I haven't seen that question come up in about a week. ;) ;)
And yet no comment in the post made just a few hours after yours :w
http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/25487487.cfm
The topic has been beaten to death, perhaps more than any other topic here on RV.net. A simple search would yield tons and tons of opinions on the subject. Questions already asked and answered.

RE: Tranny temp.

Think I read once, that the trany temp while towing, should be around 100% above ambient temprature.
That's pretty much the rule of thumb. Of course there are other variables which would make the temp higher or lower, but that's a good general comparison.

RE: Yamaha 2400 Genny oil light issue.

I doubt that the oil viscosity break down would cause your oil sensor light to come on. Like others suggested, probably a bad sensor or LOW oil level.

RE: portable surge protectors

I have one. It's the portable one from Camping world that is for 30A service. It also protects against "brown out" (aka: low voltages) which is great protection in RV parks when the electrical draw is high because everyone has their AC running!
Those guards are worth every cent!

RE: What Oil for the Old 454?

Well, being heart concious, I strictly use oils low in saturated fats. Id probably use olive oil for me and the immediate family. Grandma on the other hand gets good ol'fashioned "Crisco."

RE: Running a Tassimo Coffee maker off a generator

This is weird. Just one of my Eu2000's runs not only our 1300watt coffee pot, but when the wife plugs in her 1600 watt hair drying, it performs no problem.
I'm not sure what problem you have, but it doesn't sound good. Are you running a 100' extention cord from the genny to the coffee pot? The longer the cord, the worse your situation can become.
