RE: Suggested Parks along I-95, Virginia to Maine?

I agree with the route suggestion - we drive it each summer.
Some stop suggestions (not terrific but OK for the night).
Off I-84 at Milford, PA - River Beach Campsites
Off I-495 at Littleton, MA - Boston Minuteman Campground
Off I-95 at Wells, ME - Gregoire's Campground
Off I-95 at Hermon, ME - Pumpkin Patch RV Resort
Safe Travels!

RE: Bull Run Campground, Manassas VA

Bull Run Regional Park, if that's the one you mean, is very pretty. Most of the campsites are spacious, wooded, and the bathhouses are clean. Lots of nice hiking trails, particularly the ones along Bull Run Creek. There is a waterpark - haven't been in it, but my grandchild loves it - also putt putt golf. Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of noise from a nearby rifle range, and, as the campground is close to Dulles Airport, occasional noise from planes overhead. The campround is about 15 minutes from the town of Centreville, VA, where there is shopping and a good selection of chain-type restaurants. Also, if you wish to see sights in DC, depending upon traffic, you can get there in about 40 minutes on Route 66 East.

RE: Rodanthe Campgrounds

Thanks for that report. We were wondering what was going on at the KOA, as in the past it was one of our favorite places to stay in early/late spring before the crowds. We loved its proximity to the beach; the very clean restrooms; the little fenced in off leash dog area and the friendliness/helpfulness of the staff. So glad they have survived and are rebuilding.

RE: White Mountains, NH and Freeport,ME

While you are in Freeport, suggest Recompense Shore Campground (www.freeportcamping.com), which is about 5 miles from LL Bean (downtown Freeport) and located on Casco Bay. No sewer (dump station), but water and electricity on the wooded sites that are not located on the shoreline. The RV Park Reviews are old and don't make it sound appealing, but it is! It's an older campground, The sites are spacious. The bathhouse was immaculate when we were there in 2010. The dirt road in was a bit bumpy, but certainly not impassable. It's located on a farm and the belted cattle graze in the fields. Excellent place for walking and enjoying the beauty of Casco Bay. The staff went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. There is an amazing grocery store on the road between the campground and Freeport - The Bow Street Market - great carryout and a mix of staples and gourmet offerings. We loved it there!

RE: Manassas Battle Field Tour

Yes, I think you would have plenty of time to take a quick tour of the Manassas Battlefield - one that should not be missed! There is a parking lot near the visitor's center, and I have seen trailers parked there - however, it might be wise to call the visitor's center to make sure you can detach your car for an auto tour (703-361-1339). Actually, you may not have to detach, as you can see quite a bit of the battlefield by simply taking a walk from the Visitor's Center. There are interesting exhibitions in the Center as well, which will give you good historical background. Enjoy.

RE: Passport America.... to join, or not??

We have been camping mostly in the Eastern States and in Atlantic and Eastern Canada. Unfortunately, there are very few PA campgrounds in those areas, so we have been members for 2 years and have never used our card and will not renew. If and when we head out West, we will rejoin, as the membership appears to pay for itself there.

Does anyone know of a campground in VT (anyplace in the State) where one can get a full hookup site lakeside and where there is an enclosed off leash dog park in the campground or very close to it?

RE: Association Island 1000 Islands Region

In our minds, this is the ultimate camping spot! Amazing views of Lake Ontario in every direction, welcoming and helpful staff, well maintained grounds and spacious sites, all with full hookups, cable TV and Wi-Fi. (Unsecured, but it actually works!) The bathhouses are a bit old, but spotlessly clean. The only negative is access to groceries and supplies. Anyone camping here needs to plan ahead, as stores are some distance away. There is a small general store in Henderson, but it’s not well stocked and very expensive. For groceries and liquor, one must travel to Adams, NY which is about 15 miles away. We were informed that this campground will become a KOA for 2012, as they appear to be missing a huge part of the “market”, and think they will become more popular if in a KOA directory. Actually too bad, as it probably will become difficult to get in. We camped here on our way back to VA from Ontario, but will make it a point to return to this lovely spot. When we were here (early Sept 2011), it was considered “off season” and our waterfront site was priced at $35.00.

RE: OBX Camp Hatteras and KOA (quick photo after Hurricane)

We don't often stay in commercial campgrounds, preferring state/national areas. However, late last March (2011) we stayed at the KOA Rodanthe for almost a week, and it was fabulous....staff welcoming and helpful with restaurant suggestions ; hardly anyone in the campground; spotlessly clean bathhouse with HOT, strong showers; a fenced enclosure for our beagle and a vacant, beautiful beach just over the dunes....walked for miles, enjoying the peace and the birdlife. We'd planned to repeat that visit in 2012 and hate it that it may not be the same. Please keep us up to date on what's going on down there and thanks.

RE: Washington DC to Dollywood!!

Second the stops on the Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Parkway - too beautiful to miss. However, if you do take 81, there is a good stopping spot about 300 miles from the DC area - Ft. Criswell RV Park in Max Meadows, VA - right off 81, therefore noisy, but a good place just for the night - very clean and full hookups - helpful staff, at least when we were last there in 2008! Happy, safe travels.

RE: Big Meadows VA

The Lodge will be closed the 2nd week of November, but I belive the Wayside will still be open if you run out of anything. We often go there in mid-November, and the views are wonderful at that time of year. You will also see lots of deer that will walk right up into your campsite. We like the sites on the E loop as they afford lovely views of the valley below. It can get very chilly at that time of year, so pack your woolies and have lots of campfires. Be sure to take the hike to the falls. Enjoy

Carrabelle Beach RV Resort, FL

We're read some good reviews about this resort, but have questions that are not addressed in the reviews that we have read. If anyone has answers to the below, we'd certainly appreciate knowing them. FYI, we have a small trailer (Fun Finder 16'), which we tow with an SUV, and a small dog (beagle).
Are there any sites with shade, as we enjoy sitting outside with our dog on his tie?
What is the temperature apt to be in late January, early February?
We read that there are not many services in the area, but is there a decent grocery store, drug store, liquor store closeby?
How about any good seafood restaurants?
It appears that we can walk our dog on his leash on Carrabelle Beach - is that correct? Also, there appear to be other beaches nearby - can we walk our dog on any of those?
Are the rest rooms clean?
How about security? If we wanted to leave our trailer there for a couple of days while traveling to another part of Florida, would it be safe?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

RE: Outer banks

We loved Cape Hatteras KOA, but we were there in March 2011 and had the place practically to ourselves. A lovely beach was right over the dunes (which I hope are still there after Hurricane Irene); the staff was welcoming and helpful and the entire facility was spotlessly clean - and there was a nice fenced enclosure for our dog's playtime. However, I'm not sure we'd like it much in June, as I'm afraid it becomes rather like a large parking lot.

RE: Canada Trip Expen$ive

Yes, Canada is expensive, but worth every cent! We just returned from a trip to Quebec City, then up the south side of the St. Lawrence to Riviere-du-Loup, across on the ferry to St. Simeon, back down the north side of the seaway, stopping in all the charming little villages along the way. We felt like we were a million miles from home, living in the 1600's, surrounded by welcoming and very friendly French speaking people, who were very patient with our attempts to communicate in our high school French. We also traveled to the Laurentians (Mont Tremblant) and then to Ottawa, and finally to the 1000 Lakes area. We avoided dinners out, rather if we frequented a restaurant, it was for a late breakfast or lunch (cheaper) - then we'd just snack on delicious cheeses and pate (unexpensive in comparison to the USA)for dinner. We used our Schwab CC - no fees and subscribed to the Verizon Canada Plan. Gas was expensive, but it would have been a lot more expensive if we had actually been in France, where we really felt like we were!

RE: heading to Canada next week. have a couple ?'s

We've crossed into Canada for the last 2 summers, first into New Brunswick at Houlton, ME, and this year into Quebec at Derby Line, VT.
On both occasions, we've been asked only the following: The purpose of our travels; how long we intended to be in Canada and the amount of liquor and tobacco products we had with us. On both occasions, we were wished a good and safe visit by the customs officer and sent on our way in less than 5 minutes.

Thanks so much for all the comments. I see that there is a duty free shop near to where we will be crossing into Canada, so we will stick exactly to the allowed limits and acquire what we need at that shop.
