RE: Major fuel leak 6.7L Ford Powerstroke

If it's any consolation, my semi truck which is assigned to me had just over 600 miles on it when I noticed a wheel stud had broken off and remaining 9 lug nuts could all be turned by hand !!! This discovery after I just drove 150 miles!! Long story short, truck has alum rims and someone didn't torque to spec or re-torque.

Do you have USDOT numbers on your truck?? If not, IMO, don't need to pull into weigh stations.

RE: The old buggy met its match!

215 may not be hot for todays engines, but given his Bronc is of an older truck, 215 very well could be too hot for it. Most of todays engines are designed to run between 180-200 degrees and engine fans kick on around 215-220. Cooling capacity has increased as well over the years.
Sadly though a consequence of todays engines is that they are designed to run at max efficiency at around 65-70 mph which equates to 2,000 rpms (at least on diesels) .

RE: Height from bed rails to bottom of 5th wheel

Just keep in mind that you should NOT go over 13' 6" in overall height. 5ers don't like bridges if they are over that!. Doesn't help matters any when truck mfrs keep putting larger tires in them.

RE: making the RIDE a little smoother

My F250's door jam sticker says 55 front, 70 rear. I too have Timbrens installed, but for some reason, I don't have the clearance between them and the axle that I should. That being said however, If rear tires are aired up to 80 and fronts between 70-80 for towing our 5er, yes she rides rough when 5er is NOT hooked up and a bit harsh when it is. Let air back out to 55 and 70 and rides good again.
Are your Timbrens touching the axle all the time? If they are, contact Timbrens to see about getting a different Timbrens.

132K on truck, 100K on motor. Runs good and still getting 13-15 in town upper teens to low 20's solo on hiway, 10.5 towing. Shoot, our '11 Buick LaCrosse only gets upper teens to low 20's and that's half the weight!! What Gives?? Oh, the Buick is AWD too.

TT storage in Auburn, NY area

Does anyone know where one can store a TT indoors w/ a concrete floor preferably? Have a relative who recently purchased one and though several months away and not a member of TL's forum, I'm asking on their behalf. Auburn,NY area would be great if possible.
Thanks in advance.

RE: Ford F-350 6.7L Dually 4x4 or Chevy 3500 LTZ 6.6 L

Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge. Not going to add to the flame war as this thread is getting a bit far from what the OP had asked.
However in regards to the DEF vs EGR debate, I will weigh in. DEF is far superior than a EGR equipped truck. Why do you think trucking companies went nuts ordering new trucks in '06 BEFORE the '07 EGR emission trucks went into effect?? Talk w/ a semi truck dealer and he'll tell you if your looking for a used semi, avoid model years '07-'10 simply due to the emissions and EGR components. Most of the trucks in our division are EGR motors and they are in the shop more than on the road (they do NOT have the DPF just EGR's) motors are Cummins ISM's. Currently Cummins, Detroit, Mack, Volvo all use DEF fluid. Navistar or International still employs EGR valves and they by far are the worst performing motors used in semis. In fact IH tried suing the other engine mfrs stating that their claims to meet emissions were false. Courts ruled AGAINST IH and it turns out IH hasn't a engine to meet the '14 emissions whereas the others are meeting it NOW. So what am I saying? Yes DEF is another added cost to diesel ownership. However, the results in better mpg's, less problems and better performance tell me that despite the cost, it's the way to go.
As for Ford and their warranty issues, am not aware or live under a rock as I'm not sure what's up with it. Cannot be due to Navistar. Yes GM is Gov't owned and funded by the US taxpayers and the D-max (Isuzu)/ Ally is a great running combo. But they too have their fair share of problems. Seems that no matter what brand of truck, the vast majority run great w/o a big stink. Those w/ "X" brand that have issues make them out to be the biggest pieces of metal on the road far out shouting those w/o problems.
Getting a new Freightliner at work that has a Detroit engine, Eaton trans. Truck is made in Mexico. Aren't all Dodges made there too? Because it's a Freightshaker, does that mean it's the biggest piece of crud to tow trailers compared to a Pete or KW? Time will tell. Everything has their day. Just when it happens to you or me, then, we start to cuss.

RE: fifth wheel storage preseving tires.

I have China bombs on our rig and have been on since 2008. During the winter, it's stored indoors in an unheated storage barn w/ a concrete floor. I place a 2x10 under each set of tires which I check before storing to make sure their at 80 psi. Knock on wood, every spring upon taking it out and bringing it home, tires still at 80 psi and no flat spots and she weighs around 11,500 or so during the off months.

RE: Screen cover for large rear window on fiver.

Last year I bought some stuff at Home Depot in duct work section. Cannot recall the name off hand, but it came in a roll form. It is insulated and I also bought a roll of "aluminum" tape as I had to cut/tape pieces of the roll together in order for it to fit the Kit window by table on our Creek. Good sticky tape BTW. The product is of solid type as no light will pass thru or very little at most. It DID work great as the sun was blasting thru the window due to way 5er was parked. A/C kept rig cool. When done or sun went down, simply pulled insul roll stuff from behind the day/nite shade, rolled it up and put in BR closet until next time. Cannot recall cost now, but not very expensive at all. Took longer to cut/tape. I'd recommend this route.

RE: 2013 Ram 1500 offers new V6 option & new 8 speed option.

ACZL - no response??
Tell me about offroad clearance again!!
I agree tires will add ground clearance. But by a factory offering a system to only increase the body 2" to me is worthless. True off roaders will take a stock body and install a "X" inch lift kit to get body away from ground by far more than 2" plus they will add humongus tires. On top of that, how many rver's are going to spend 40-70 grand on a truck that tows their RV's and go off roading wether HD or LD?? Perhaps some rver's have deep pockets and will go offroading w/ their tv's. I'm just stating an observation from a laments persons perspective.

RE: 2013 Ram 1500 offers new V6 option & new 8 speed option.

Sorry to burst the Rammers bubble, but the additional 2" gained for off road does NOT increase the ground clearance. Body yes, ground clearance NO. Is the air level system air shocks or air bags?. On paper, the new ideas look good. Let's see how they work in the real world.

RE: Just purchased a New F-350 XLT Power Stroke LB CC

Does anyone know for a fact if the mention of adding additives is said during a sale along w/ draining of pump/filter? OR is it only after you sign on dotted line this is said? Seems to me that a owner shouldn't have to drain "X" at each fill up or add something each time as well. I find it hard to believe that a MFR would build/sell something if this is the case. OR am I missing something? As for the NAV system, I always thought a 7 dollar Rand McNally road atlas would work just as well. At least it has for me. Problem w/ some GPS units is that they don't tell you of low underpasses/bridges. Truckers atlas will as well as some GPS units. That's why I cannot understand why dealer load up stock trucks w/ a whole bunch of******that some buyers don't want. And if ordered, cannot get certain options unless you get something else which you may not want that's why you're ordering it. Guess I'll keep my '03.

RE: Tire replacement time

Should have been moved to towing/trucks section. But seeing it's here, I'll say I'm happy w/ Pirelli Scorpion STR's all season. I use them during the summer and switch to winter tires on their own rims for winter. Just make sure the air psi is up to snuff on whatever brand one uses before heading out. ESPECIALLY when the temps are warm/hot.

RE: Cedar Creek 36RE or Pinnacle 36REQS

While not a "new '12" model, our '06 (purchased new in '05) Silverback is one fantastic unit. We went to the big RV show in Harrisburg in fall of '04 and looked at about 20 5ers w/ bunks and once we left and made a comparison sheet, the CC came out on top. Features, std equipment, layout, fit/finish, quality of workmanship, room, storage, etc.
Wife's parents had a '03 Jayco 325 BHS and while it was a very nice coach, it had it's downside which prompted us to look at something for ourselves. Non slide BR reminded me of getting dressed in a cabover tractor as the place with any real room to get dressed was at corners of bed. TV shelf in BR was a flip up kind and looked kinds chinsey IMO (never got used). Kitchen/LR layout was and still is pretty much the norm for all coaches w/1 main slide. Not much counter space. Bathroom was probly my biggest gripe as it was an all in one and when sitting on the john, knees weren't that far from hitting the tub (I'm 5'7"). Tub was real small but got the job done. 4 blade fan in ceiling as opposed to the 10 blade multi speed on others. Rear layout for the 3 bunks wasn't too bad. Though the door steps at times were very high off the ground. Had just the front storage compartment as the main one which had 2 doors. Made it difficult to load/unload things. Another storage compartment in the rear w/ small doors. Overall, was a very nice coach, but wife and I wanted something of our own w/ more room and better design of things.
The CC has 2 LARGE exterior compartments for storage and a flat floor in basement one. Plus on ours, we have 2 more add'l ones in back which hold oddball things. If we didn't have them, would have to fit everything into the front 2 w/ a some re-work. BR has a slide and the bath is the walk thru kind which is a love/hate w/ folks. We like it as when the pocket door is closed, you get kind of a "suite" feeling being all open to front w/o accordian door pulled across. Closet is HUGE and we are able to pack enough clothes for 1 week into dresser and OH cabinet. Kitchen/LR is as I said above, is typical and works. Much more counter space. Large window by kit table. Bunkhouse slide has 2 full bunks and a 1/2 bunk. Son outgrew the 1/2 bunk, but it holds things nicely now. Has nice closet, dresser, tv shelf w/ 6 pigien holes under it and storage under bottom bunk which is same as the one I mentioned above as well.
We only added or changed 4 things when we ordered it as it came std w/ many already. Upgrades we made were: 12v battery disconnect, 15K A/C, 10 gal water heater and paint pkg. We did have a problem w/ one side of paint a couple years into it which CC took care of. Axles were replaced due to being faulty (CC wasn't alone with these axles). CC not only sent new axles, but 4 new tires and alum rims where I had painted steel which IMO looked nice too. We don't tow long distances (500 miles or more one way) but do tow several to 10-12 w/e a year with each way being 70 to 100 miles. We, like many others, tow w/ a 3/4 ton truck and very happy w/ combo. Trailer has weights of: 1800 pin, 10,800 empty on both and 13,800 GVW. Fully loaded the pin is 2,000 and 12,800 on trailer so we still have room for 1,000 more pounds!
Overall with the CC, we've been more than completely satisfied and receive many compliments on each outing as folks think it's new. I'd like to upgrade to a new rear LR CC, but the DW says not as long as our son (12 years old) still goes w/ us as the BH offers a place for him to go and make a mess of it and can just shut the door from rest of coach so we don't have to see it! Darn it!!
Like others have said that own each brand, they are happy w/ their rigs and are brand loyal. For us, it was features, ease of use on things, room to move inside w/o hitting something, fit/finish etc. All coaches have their flaws, but for us at least, we've been blessed w/ a great unit that has served us very well in the 7 years of ownership.
FWIW, we never owned any type of RV before ourselves. Not even a tent or TT. Being a semi driver, it seemed fitting that we go w/ a 5th wheel as it offers many advantages over a TT. DW can tow it w/o a problem and she drives nothing more than a car 99.9% of the time and does well towing it and is very conscious of things. Nice to have her along to relive me when needed. We looked at several brands, researched on the net, asked lots of questions and still came back to CC. Even the techs at dealer like seeing me come in for routine service (primarily NYS inspection) as they know they don't have to do a whole lotta work. They tell other customers or potential ones about our coach (so they tell me) and they seem quite proud of the coach as well.
Good luck and let us know what you decide.
