RE: To Tow or Not to Tow

With a 23' coach, you should not have too much trouble parking in most places. If it was a bigger coach I would say differently.

RE: Providence RI end of July 3 days needed

Try the Mystic area of CT too. Not sure exactly what is available, but there are a few down that way. Strawberry Park in CT may be an option. You are in full summer swing up here at that time and it can be tough to get into places. I also agree that the northeast in general has fewer options for bigger rigs than other parts of the country. Many of our campgrounds are old and not set up for 30' plus rigs.

RE: RV's

Some of it is of course what you earn, and some is what you do with what you earn. I got into a discussion with a guy at work a couple of years ago. We took the MH to FL and it happened, while we were down there traded in our toad on a new one. his comment was "must be nice to travel in that big RV and buy a new car." I happen to know he makes more money than I do. BUT, he and his wife both smoke, 3 packs a day combined. $8/pack around here. They pay more in cigarettes every month than I pay for the MH and car combined.
Then, I'm sure that people look at what we do a think we waste money and can only afford to drive a Suzuki and not a Mercedes.
I started in tents, then TT, then used MH, then eventually new. We enjoyed them all equally. There are some months that I wish we had the paid for used MH. I like the biker motto. I'ts not what you ride it's that you ride."

RE: 2012 Ford Focus

Why do they say disconnect the ground? It seems to me that there are a lot more places to accidentally get a ground by hitting metal somewhere. I always figured that by disconnecting the positive you have fewer chances of mistakingly making a connection. Electrical is not my strong suit so just kind of wondering. Maybe to keep people from accidentally hitting a body panel with a wrench while disconnectiing the hot? CYA?

RE: Ride Quality

Well, a DP is going to give you the best ride. A gasser is just going to be stiffer and more harsh and you are sitting on the engine. Basing your experience on one unit isn't enough to pass judgement over a whole category of RV's. Your P/U is going to be the quietest option, no doubt. Just think, there are no appliences, silverware, pots and pans, cabinet doors, etc. to move around. That said I have no incessent rattles, etc in my A gasser and it is pretty darn quiet, much of that is due to experience and packing well. I think more research is required.

RE: This MH is cooking my goose!

Same here. Besides it's a good way to exercise the generator and I switch my a/c's to run them both too. Most things suffer more from sitting than using.

RE: Other than outdoor showers, what don't you use (and why?)

Can't think of anything we don't use. We don't use everything, every time, but I don't use the oven in the house every day either. Certainly there is nothing I refuse to use.

RE: Virginia to Plymouth MA

We do MA to FL fairly often. I have been making the trip for 35 years starting as a kid with my parents and this is the most consistenly hassel free route with the quickest time that we have found. I live in central MA. From VA,I take 95N to the NJ turnpike and bail off the turnpike on to 287 (about 70 to 80 miles up the turnpike I think). 287 over the Tappan Zee. Roads are in better shape and generally less traffic. Night time is the best, Sunday mornings aren't bad. Then you can either take 287 to 95 and up. This shorter route but prone to more traffic in CT (New Haven, Bridgeport), RI (Providence) and through the Boston area. The other option more miles, but generally less traffic would be 287 to 684 to 84 to 90 to 495.

RE: tires

My father and I both had terrible luck with Goodyears (670's)5 blowouts combined in four years on tires no older than 4 years old. Both now have Hankooks and no issues for a combined 10,000 miles.
On the older Ford v-10 chassis (8 lug) they had problems with centering the wheels and you had to go through extra pains to make sure everything was seated right. There was a TSB I believe. As stated earlier by another poster.

RE: Who is still camping?

We will continue on. We usually go about every other weekend from june until October. Depending on where we go I may get as many as three trips on a single tank. We are not taking the MH to FL this year, but that is only because we have free use of a condo near the beach. Will be taking the car and that will save us about $1,000.00 in gas money. If not for the free place to stay we would be going with the MH.
I would ssay that most of us here are pretty lucky and the price of gas has a marginal affect on our life styles. It's the people wo have to spend an extra $50.00 a week to get to work and have to sacrifice money from their food budgets, etc. that really get hurt. Retired folks on fixed incomes as well.
I will sacrifice a lot of other stuff before I give up the traveling.

RE: RV for family of 4, new to RVing, THOR ACE?

We have a Damon (Thor)Daybreak. It was at the time their entry level model. The quality is decent and we have had no coach related issues thus far. We did get the bunkhouse model. Our kids are 5 and 8. I really appreciate not having to undo a dinette or sofa every morning. Our bed is in the very back and the bunks are across the hall from the bathroom. We have had this floorplan for 5 years now and are very satisfied with it.
It's nice to have that space for the kids to nap of just chill out and play with their Nintendo's for a while and it is their personal space. Some models even have individual tv's and dvd players in the bunks (our doesn't) again, on a rainy afternoon it is a good place for them the hang out rather than antagonize each other.

RE: Excited, but a little sad.

No, we will leave on a Thursday after work and drive straight through. About 19 hours in the car. I'ts the way we've always done it. Like tearing of a band-aid really quick. It's painful but for a shorter amount of time.

Excited, but a little sad.

We are making our annual trip to Florida in April. This year however, we will be taking the car. :( Usually my parents head down the same time we do and stay in their condo in Daytona. Well, this year they took a cruise and will not be heading down. Soooo, free condo for the week. Impossible to justify taking the MH. Either way, we have a free place to stay (sister has a pad with W,E,S hook-ups)but $1,600 worth of gas VS $500. The $1,000 will go into the summer travel fund and will allow us quite a few more weekends this summer.
What I'm not looking forward to is traveling in a car with a 5 and 8 year old with no bathroom on board.

RE: Rest areas with "no overnight parking"

We usually travel south during the April school break and it is busy. I've driven through three or more rest stops in a row that were so crowded I could barely drive through, let alone park. So, if you are expecting a heavy travel weekend, the issue may be actually finding space in a rest stop depending on when you stop. Keep your options open and have a back-up plan. If you have a smart phone there are apps for locating Wal-marts that allow overnight stays, probably Cracker Barrels and Flying J's as well.

Not sure how scientifically CR goes about getting their results, but I do know people squack a lot louder about a bad experience than they do a good one.

RE: can I avoid toll roads?

Not sure what your reasons are, but you could easily spend $30.00 in gas to get around a $10.00 toll....

RE: Have a question for you...

No gloves. Have soap, sprayer and towels in the bay. I work in waste water plants on a regular basis, two kids, and pets. Wash when done or with possible contact. I never wore gloves changing a diaper, or cleaning the toilet at home. Probably more of a chance getting something from any public doorknob. Got to exercise your immune system, keep it strong.:B

RE: 2011 Winnebago Vista Rust

I've lived in New England all my life and don't often see rust that bad on 10 year old vehicles. I had an old plow truck that I didn't particularly care about and I kept a sand/salt mix in the bed all winter for 5 winters and the bed/tailgate/hitch/frame wasn't even that bad and this was an 85 Dodge.
