RE: 1976 Dodge Sportsman 'TravelCraft' (newb)

Skimask - when you put the plywood up to strengthen the ceiling joists, glue them together with polyurethane single component glue (Gorilla Glue). It'll foam up and fill the voids including into the punky wood of the existing joists (the water in those joists should be enough to kick over the polyurethane). Stagger the joints if you put on more than one layer of ply; with G. glue in between layers. Clamp or screw into place. I used screws. If the existing joists are too punky to hold screws, put a layer of ply on the other side and through bolt or screw through. Worked for me.........eddielee
By the way, the mfgs of G glue said it is ok to heat the glue to make it more spreadable - doesn't reduce its strength. I used 180F hot water! The 14ft span ceiling joist I repaired that holds up the 2nd floor wall of my home has held up for the last 16 years wth no deflection ( I check it with a laser once a year - there are no stud wall or posts under it).

RE: I need advice quick please

Usual - for example - my Class C's Ford frame and suspension was built some time in '95 or '96. Jayco ordered the cut away in '98 so Ford put the engine tranny etc in and badged it(VIN #) as a '98. Jayco installed the body and titled it as a '99. So, I own a 1999 Jayco Designer sitting on a 1998 Ford Cut-Away Econoline E-SuperDuty Chassis. Since this is now the 2012 model year - your parents vehicle will, most likely, be a 2012 sitting on a 2011 chassis. If it is a 2011 left over model, then the chassis will be a 2010.

RE: Dragging my trailer hitch

I had one of those rollers on my C for the same reason. Since it could no longer dig in, the rolling pressure broke the welds on my receiver. I say modify the trailer to raise it or change the tongue.

RE: 2007 Jayco Automatic Steps

Unless the steps have weakened due to rust or damage they should work as intended. I'd look to the floor they're bolted to, to see if somehow it has grown weak thru rot or perhaps the mounting bolts have come loose.

RE: 1976 Dodge Sportsman 'TravelCraft' (newb)

Skimask- you'll probably find that the reason for the pump "burping" is that it isn't holding line pressure and bleeding back into the tank. I understand that there is an easily replaced check valve in most of these pumps. But most folks just replace the pump to an upgraded unit.

RE: Wal-Mart deep cycle RV/Marine batteries

Thanks everyone. Looks like I got all I could out of this one. It was a replacement for a previous Wal-Mart battery that failed after less than 1 year (one cell went bad). This one won't hold a charge. I'll just take my lumps and get something better. I always liked Sears products, but, I read recently that Sears is expected to go belly up by the end of the year. We'll just have to see what is out there. Out here, neither CostCo or Wal-mart sells a true deep cycle battery. Also, there is no Sam's Club anywhere in Oregon. Thanks again for your thoughts on the subject....

RE: Class C Pros and Cons

I currently own a 5th wheel but have never towed it. I owned and towed 7 different trailers over the last 50+ years and traded the last one in on our current Class C ('99 Jayco Designer 2930) a 29 ft rig. We have towed a a Mazda 4x4 pu, a Chevy Tracker 4x4, and our current Jeep Liberty 4x4. Since I bought the C, I've aged 11 years and gained 40 lbs. But, I still find that hooking and unhooking the tow'ed vehicle is easier than the TT's or any 5er on the market. JMHO

Wal-Mart deep cycle RV/Marine batteries

Anyone out there have trouble with Wal-Mart deep cycle batteries not living up to their life expectancy? I got about 2 yrs out of it. My PD5500 converter with Charge Wizard is working properly. Cells are filled with water. My digital volt meter shows it's charging at 13.42 volts. But the no load battery voltage is 7.85 volts. I'm beginning to think that this battery, at least, is a piece of %$#^&@. As I asked, has anyone else had a bad experience with these Wal-Mart Exxide batteries? Or was I just unlucky? Right now I have my 30amp stand alone battery charger on the battery to see if I can bring it up (it's only charging at a 6 amp rate - at 12.78 starting volts).

RE: Levelers on Seneca

I might add - put a small bubble level where you can see it from the drivers seat (after you make sure that the rig is absloutly level the first time). Then use it to level the rig from then on - those built in leveling lights are hard to set up properly and are usually out of whack. I used a 12" torpedo level on the stove top initially to set up my jacks to level the first time.

RE: Total Rebuild of a 1979 Dodge Class C

Old trucker - make sure that 357 is loaded with shot if you're going to carry it in the RV. Slugs from that thing will go thru the Purp., thru the wall and take out an innocent three rigs down from you in the campground. It's pretty hard to aim when yu're freshly awakened from a sound sleep! No need to ask how I know - just believe that I do!

RE: california/oregon coast

The Spruce Goose is not at the Tillamook Air Museum. It's in McMinnville. The Tillamook museum is a great place for WWII planes, but not quite as good as the Evergreen Air Museum in McMinnville (on Hiway 18/22). They charge extra to climb into the Goose. If you like camping at State Parks, I would suggest Beverly Beach State Park north of Newport. Also, Honeyman SP south of Florence OR. By the way, Portland is not on the coast. However, you can get there by taking Hiway 18/22 out of Lincoln City, Oregon and going thru McMinnvile etc.

RE: Removing Dinette Seat Belts from Floor

When I took out my Dinette, I just drove the bolts on through. Can't tell you where they went. They don't rattle around and so far, after 3 years haven't caused any problems. In case you haven't picked your chairs yet, I use desk chairs - they go up and down, lock in the upright position or lean back as well as swivel. I can sleep in them w/o a problem. And, they roll well on the carpet.

RE: Relocating rear bumper mounted Spare Tire...

My Jayco Designer 2930 has the factory spare mounted underneath just fwd of the rear bumper. Have used it 3 times in the past 3 years. I would no more hit the road w/o a spare then I would travel w/o water. You can find under the rig tire mount equipment in almost any wreaking yard. Doesn't have to be from an RV. The one I put on my flat bed trailer came off a Datsun pickup.

RE: Selling our Class C

My neighbor passed away recently and his widow wants to sell their Class A. She gets the same c**p from the lookyloos too - want to know why she's sellling it. For some reason many of them don't believe her story. It's a shame our society has become what it is. They all seem to want her to give it away (to them).

Rollers? Well I had a friend that painted his car with a whiskbroom. I used a pump up weed sprayer to stain a shed once - looked ok.... Good luck with the job oldtrucker.

RE: Monitor Panel

Mowermech hit it right on the head - THEY JUST DON'T WORK! Set your own "GOAL" Most of the time it's just stuff hung up on the inside of the tank shorting out the probes. Everyone seems to have a non-effective way of cleaning them off. They still don't work right. Forgiddaboutit.

RE: How to set water valves in our '95 Chevy Coachman Class C?

What do your parents have to say about your problem? Surely they know how to use the cross over, fill and drain valves. Depending on the type of valve, I would place them in the closed position, put some water in the tank and then, watching under the rig, open them one at a time to see which one is the drain valve.
