RE: old cats and rabies shots-

When we still had our two cats, they were given rabies and their other shots on the recommended schedule until they were around 15. Our vet told us at that time, (I'm paraphrasing here) that they should have some built-up immunity from the years of shots they had already received. She said she couldn't tell us it was ok to not give the rabies shots but didn't recommend getting any of the other regular immunizations anymore due to their frail state of health. They lived until 18 & 20. I did have all 15 of my Mom's feral cat colony get rabies shots when they were spayed/neutered. We have traveled to and from Canada several times over the years when we had the cats and were never asked for any proof of rabies shots for the cats. Not to say you won't be asked, but something to consider. I wouldn't hide her or lie about having her but I might not have her vaccinated unless I was told I had to have it done. It would depend upon how much it would mess up your schedule if you were turned away from the US border until you got her vaccinated.

RE: A cargo Slide Tray

RV Exit - Kwikee Slide Trays We bought a set of rails from RV Exit. You have to buy the rails and a trim kit (the ends). Then we added plywood for the bottom. RV Exit was very helpful when we called with sizing/weight questions.

RE: What do full timers do to NOT become bored with life style

I read your post a couple times. I guess my response is to ask you a question - If you were to decide to NOT fulltime when you retire, what will you do to not become bored at your house? We visit friends more than we would if we were still in a house. We have made more friends than we would have if we were still in a house. We spend more time with extended family. We have taken the grandkids to places we would never have been able to if we still had a house to support.

RE: Walmart parking lot stays - need advice please

We have stayed overnight at WalMarts without any problems. We only stay at stores that are open 24 hours. We always have an alternate plan in place if we arrive at the WalMart and it looks to be in an area that doesn't so good. Basically we plan our overnight stays at WalMart the same way we plan our stops at campgrounds in a new area. If we pull into the campground and it doesn't look so good, then we move on to our alternative plan.

RE: Where to find pet sitter when on the road?

I would only have put our cats in a cats only kennel but luckily we never had to do that. We were always able to make new friends who were able to care for our cats the couple times we had to leave them. I wouldn't have been able to leave the cats in a room with a bunch of barking dogs or even in the next room. I don't think the cats would have made it to 18 & 20 if I had.

RE: Possible Purchase

We have a 2007 Monaco Knight 40PDQ and have been fulltime with it for almost 5 years now. The only thing that we wished we had done when we bought it was to have four corner weighed it BEFORE we loaded it. We run very close to the max weight on the rear axle but then again we carry everything we own with us. We love the coach and have put almost 50,000 miles on it.

RE: Wash.DC. Closest Military RV Pk?

We prefer to stay at Fort Meade, but Andrews is fine too.

RE: Sleep Number Beds Versus Memory Foam

Not all Sleep number beds are created equal nor are all memory foam. We love our King Size Sleep number bed but I'm not sure if I would like it as well in a smaller size.

RE: Generator vs Inverter

Can someone explain the differenct to me, if there is one? Why one over the other? Above poster pretty well explained the difference. As to why one over the other - The generator will provide AC power for as long as you put fuel (gas/diesel/propane) into the generator. The inverter will only provide AC power until all the batteries are depleted. To recharge the batteries, you need one of three things - 1. plug into shore power. 2. Run a generator 3. Install and use solar panels. Actually I guess there is a 4th option of using a wind turbine.

RE: EZ pass questions

We use the I-pass because they don't charge any inactivity fees.

RE: How much longer is the drive in an RV?

After thinking about it a little more, came up with another suggestion. If you are going to stay at Fort Wilderness inside Disney, why not try to spend two nights on the road but spend the 2nd night close enough so that you arrive at Fort Wilderness as early as they allow check in on the 3rd day. That way you can set up camp without having spent a full day on the road, ride the bikes a bit around the park, hit the swimming pool, and see the fireworks from the pier, all on the first full day there. Then you can hit the park(s) bright and early and well rested on the 4th day.

RE: HELP I think our refrigerator just took a dump

Unfortunately Dale, the yellow powdery substance is from your cooling unit. It;s toast. You now have to decide whether to invest in a new fridge or get a new cooling unit. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. x2 - either need a new refrigerator or if you decide to replace the cooling unit, depending upon which model you have, you can replace it with an Amish Cooling Unit.

RE: How much longer is the drive in an RV?

450 miles in a day is a long day for us. We both drive which helps a lot but it is definitely doable in two days even with one driver. ON the other hand, spring break at Disney is very, very crowded.

RE: Monitor for tanks and LPG Gas

I have a monitor panel that was working fine. I went to de-winterize it and the monitor panel that gives readings for LPG, Fresh water, Holding and Gray water does not give me reading when I press the "test" button. The water pump switch and the the hot water switch for gas both work. The fine print at top reads "Customed Designed by KIB" (not sure of the KIB) It also has reading scale for the batteries (L,F,G,C) I checked the two on boad batteries and they seem fine. I am looking for help or any ideas. Do you think the test switch is bad? Do you also have similar monitor in the wet bay? When our inside display stopped working, we swapped the board out with the monitor in the wet bay to determine it was the board. We ordered a new board from KIB for under $40 including shipping.

RE: Small cracks in tires

I just went through this. I had put a new set of Michelin tires on our RV in July of 09. The DOT codes were 3 weeks old at the time I bought them. Last August (at 26 months old) the tires were already cracking in a 1/2" wide area all around each of the tires. I took the tires to the Michelin dealer, sent pictures to Michelin, and spoke to the Michelin rep. on the phone. They did nothing to help me. I take excellent care of all of my stuff, including my tires. I also kept them covered. We recently bought a different motorhome with 10 year old Goodyears on it that still looked like new, just as the 10 year old Goodyears on our former motrhome looked when we bought it. I bought new tires again, but this time I didn't buy Michelins. I am really disappointed to read your post because I hoped by replacing the Goodyears I was unhappy with, with Michelins would be a good thing. The Goodyears we replaced were just under 6 years old. When they removed the rear tires, on the inside of two of the dual tires, where you can't see of course, there were cracks large enough to put my ring finger into. They couldn't believe we didn't have a blow out. These tires were well cared for AFTER we bought the rig new but they sat on a dealer lot for well over 1 year with likely no care. We weigh our coach every year. If we travel with 100 gallons of fresh water on board we are about 750 pounds over on the rear axle but we very, very rarely travel that full or for more than 100 miles if we do have the fresh water full. Is it possible, I'm just asking here, that being overweight or having tires not rated for the load, be part of why different owners have good and bad experiences with both Goodyears and Michelins? Or is it just a bad day at the factory when some of the tires are made? I just can't understand why there doesn't seem to be a clear winner when it comes to tire brand for motorhomes.

RE: Traveling through Canada

We like to have about $100 in Canadian Cash just for those places that do not take plastic. We normally just stop at a WalMart and get cash back with our purchase. When using credit cards, we check with the credit card company prior to going as exchange rates and fees for foreign transactions vary from one card issuer to another. You also want to let your credit card company know that you will be traveling outside your normal area of usage or they may disable the card until they can reach you to confirm it is really you using your card.

RE: Fridge is toast. New cooling unit?

We seriously considered a residential refrigerator last summer when our cooling unit failed on our Norcold. We elected to go with the Amish cooling unit instead because we didn't have the space or weight left for the additional batteries that we felt would be necessary with a residential unit to allow us to dry camp as often and as long as we like to do. We went to Shipshewana, Indiana and had ours installed where they make them. Either Amish Cooling unit or residential fridge are a good choice - just depends upon your camping needs.

RE: Mailing address question

We use Good Sam Mail Forwarding Service out of Pensacola, FL for our address of record. When we are moving around a lot, we will have Good Sam forward our mail to General Delivery at a small town Post Office where we will be for a couple days. I prefer a small town because it makes it easier to find the Post Office and our package. They will hold the package up to 30 days if I recall correctly.
