that's right, I have never seen this question on the forum before. I read a post just now on how to sanitize a fresh water tank, BUT I have never read how to sanitize a fresh water tank that doesn't have a gravity flow. the kind that you hook up the city water hose to and turn a valve to fill the unit's fresh water tank. How do you get the bleach into the tank through the city water hook up?? inquiry minds want to know

When we had that kind of system, we put a cup of bleach into the hose then connected it and turned it on. The bleach is forced into the tank.

OK got it, put the bleach into the hose using a funnel and then hook up the hose and turn on the water. Never thought of that . I was trying to picture pouring bleach in the intake using a funnel and pictured the bleach going all over the side of the TT.

The bleach in the hose sounds like a good idea. But start with a hose that has no water in it. Then prop or clamp the trailer end up off the ground but not connected to the trailer. Then you can pour the bleach into the faucet side of the hose.

If there is water in the hose or the trailer end is connected you will have a heck of a time getting the bleach into the hose and probably wind up with some pretty splotchy blue jeans.

After you pour the bleach into the hose you can connect the ends and fill the tank.

I have seen the question before, and have answered it, but it's been awhile and it's probably in the archives. (posts over a year old)

What make and model unit? What does the fresh water valve/manifold assembly look like?

On my Coachmen Class-C, and many Coachmen MH & Trailers with their "Waterworks" system, you put the valves into the "Tank Fill" position (the diagram is on the panel), remove the "Winterize" plug adjacent to the valves and connect a short hose to the system at that point (the hose with fitting was provided with my rig.) This hose is then placed in a container with sanitizing solution. When the water pump is turned on, the solution is drawn into the FW tank.

The directions from my manual are stated below. I have redacted the portion about gravity fill systems. I assume some other manufacturers, who do not use Gravity Fill on their FW systems, have something similar.

-Prepare a chlorine solution using 1/4 cup of chlorine bleach to a gallon of water. Prepare one gallon of solution for every 15 gallons of fresh water capacity (e.g. 2 gallons of solution for 30 gallon system capacity).

-For products with a Water Filter System, remove filter and install bypass line or, if equipped, place bypass valve in the bypass position. Replace with a new filter after the sanitizing procedures are completed.

-For products with the Water Works Panel (Diag. B & C), remove fitting from the suction plug and connect hose to it and place other end of hose in container with the chlorine solution. Place water valves in the “FILL” position as indicated by the pictorial diagrams on the Water Works Panel.

-Turn Water pump on and after the recommended amount of solution is in the tank turn water pump off. Connect a water supply hose to the city water fill connection and complete filling the tank with clean fresh water. Place valves in the “USE” position after tank is filled. Turn the water pump on to pressurize the water system.

-Open hot water lines on all faucets (kitchen, lavatory, tub/shower, and if equipped, the outside shower) until the solution begins to flow continuously and a chlorine smell is noticed. Close and repeat with the cold side of the faucets.

-Let solution remain in system for at least 3 hours.

-After required period of time, open faucets, low point line drains, and remove water heater drain plug to drain the system. Drain fresh water tank. Some solution will remain in the water heater, but
will flush out in the following steps.

-Close all drains and faucets and reinstall water heater drain plug. Fill fresh water tank with clean fresh water. Turn pump on and allow water to flow through water heater, all faucets, lines and drains
until tank is empty. If a chlorine taste lingers, flush system with a solution consisting of one quart of vinegar to five gallons of fresh water. Follow with another clean fresh water flush.

-Follow local public codes regarding dumping gray water tank.

Winterizing is done in a similar manner only the valves are set in the "Winterize" position (bypassing the FW tank) and the RV Antifreeze solution is used. (if you winterize with solution, I merely drain my system between uses as the RV is used year round).

Not a new question actually and the solution is easy; buy one of these at any rv equipment/supply store.

Set your city water to the tank-fill position, connect the hand pump to the inlet and then pump from a jug of bleach.

A 25' x 1/2" hose holds about 6 cups of liquid, and a 100 gallon fresh tank only needs about 1-3/4 cups of bleach to sanitize it. Just connect the RV end of the empty hose as usual, pour the bleach in the other end slowly using a small funnel, and then connect it to the supply spigot.

Going along with all the above, we had a trailer that we bought new in 2006. The fresh water tank did NOT have a drain valve. Fortunately, while still under warranty, the tank developed a crack so that a new tank was needed. Before installation, I had the dealer install a drain valve. Very difficult to get to to open but it did work.

Hi All.

A peice of cake there old guy. I have that system. For many years now, I have used a Whole House Water Filter to keep particles out of our TV's Water Systems. I even used it on other RV's that had regular Fresh Water Fill Outlets. Our Motorhome doesn't have one. We just take the Filter out of the Whole House Filter Canister, and add the amount of Bleach that we need. This way, it dilutes the Bleach, so its not so hard on Seals and Rubber Parts in your System. We also use a "Battery Operated Water Meter" on our Water Hose, that is re-setable. That way there is no guessing as to how much water we are putting into our Fresh Water Tank. We also use this Water Meter to tell us how many Gallons of water we can use, before we have to regenerate our Water Softner. Comes in real handy. As I said, it takes all the guess work out of it. Its also good for anyone who doesn't know what size Tanks are on thier RV's. Good Luck. Happy Travels. Dan & Jill
