Hot water heater is 8 years old. Primarily used it on electric. Now the water heater light is off and only cold water. Propane still works and all breakers and fuses are Ok. Any ideas before I call the nobile repair guy?

Make and model of water heater?
Tripped breaker? Turn water heater breaker to off position applying pressure toward off, turn breaker back on.
50 ampere rig? Does all other 120 volt items work? Both AC units? Could have lost power to second phase of shore power.

What make of water heater do you have. If it's an Atwood, it could just be the heating element that needs changing. Remove old element, go to Lowes/Home Depot purchase a new heating element and install the new one, reconnect the wires. I had to replace the heating element on my Atwood Gas/Electric unit, so it's not hard to do.

It's an at wood heater. 50 amp service. All breakers and fuses ok. If the heating element is out would that make the inside water heater light not corm on?

If you have a meter you could disconnect the wires from the element and check to see what amount of resistance is present. If the meter reads "infinite" or no resistance, the element has failed. You would not begin to check this until you are certain that there is no power at the switch, the wiring, or the heating element. If you are unable to do this, don't try it. A 1500 w element rated at 120v should have resistance of around 8-10 ohms.

It could but it could also be a failed switch, a failed switch light, a disconnected wire, or a failed circuit breaker. Do you own a meter?

Not much of an electrician, no meter.....however I am probably able to replace the element. Would the battery cut off switch by the door cut off electricity to the heater ?

It would kill the 12VDC power, but NOT the 120VAC that powers the element. You either need to disconnect from shore power, or turn the breaker off.

Do you have 120vac at the heating element? If so, what kind of ohm reading do you get across the element with the power disconnected. If infinity or OL on a digital meter, then I'd go for a new element, but couldn't tell you how to replace it without seeing it.
