Leo Benson wrote: Date shakes in AZ. Can't remember the route, I passed thru on the way from San Diego to PHX. Amazing. Try them even if you don't like dates. Tastes like caramel. It's famous, just google it.
along the 10 and 40 you can find many date shacks

My SC faves are she-crab soup, livermush, and BBQ pig. In Nebraska - corn fed beef (Omaha Steaks, anyone??). In Iowa - PORK!

The chicken fried steak with cream gravy is pretty much the official state food, served with corn on the cob, Texas toast, and mashed taters (and more cream gravy).
You should also try this magnificent sweet: Texas Chewy Pecan Pralines
The smoked meats are truly great, and contrary to what many have said, it's NOT the sauce. The meats should taste great with or without a sauce, which should be served on the side.
Fajitas were, indeed, invented here in Texas. Look for the ones who serve a pepper that's not a bell pepper for the best flavor combinations.
If you like tamales, I've seen tamales made out of everything from pork to chicken to beef to raisins. Each has its own unique flavor. Look for tamales with more than just a sliver of "stuffing," so you'll actually taste what it was supposed to have inside -- and this will apply across the southwest.
There's a winery outside Albuquerque, NM that makes a wine infused with either green or red chilis. They're fabulous, and reasonably priced.
If you're passing through the Texas Hill Country, strongly recommend you dawdle along US 290 from Austin west to I-10, and visit the excellent wineries along the way. You'll also pass the lavendar and wildflower farms near Fredericksburg, pass right through that German settlement (stop for some classic German cooking), and see some gorgeous countryside. Lots of RV parks along the way, too.
Enjoy your trip and gutes Geschmak!

Yes, Peaches are thought of as a GA food, but depending on exactly when you come through, they may or may not be in season.. and if the weather doesn't change, we may not even have any..
Also in GA we have peanuts (boiled peanuts are late summer specialty), and Watermelons.. Cordele GA, area is a huge watermelon producing area and has a big Watermelon festival every year just before the 4th of July. (think of the song Watermelon Crawl and you have the entire festival down).
strawberries are a spring thing in Fl and slightly later in GA

LA - Red Beans and Rice, Jambalaya, Gumbo, etc. If you plan on cooking yourself search for a good recipe from a local source on the internet. The boxed mixes or canned products aren't very good. One exception may be Blue Runner Red Beans (if you like the creamy version) just buy some local smoked sausage to go on the side. Beans are very easy to cook, just takes time. If you can steam rice you can cook jambalaya. Gumbo can be tricky without a good cast iron pot.
Enjoy your travels through the south. Bring your walking shoes, so you can walk off all those calories you will be eating if you plan on trying all our favorites.

True,,, Memphis BBQ has sauce NC BBQ has sauce and Kansas City BBQ has sauce. True Texas BBQ NO sauce, it's all in the rub. Even in Lockhart one of the meccas of BBQ outside of Austin, one of the old historic BBQ houses, I think it's Black BBQ refuses to even have BBQ sauce in the building. Other places have it in a squeeze bottle on the table for northern immigrants. Definitly try the chicken fried steak....no not country fried it is chicken fried steak. And Taco Cabana is not a good place for Mexican food. Stay away from the chains and try the places with Taqueria in the name. They ususually won't be in a big fancy building but will serve good Mex food and lots of it....Same with BBQ stay away from the chains.

If you're passing thru Cincinnati, stop at Skyline Chili. They're on every corner. You haven't had chili like this. Its Greek Chili with a distinct flavor of cloves. Three way- Chili, spaghetti, and yellow(rat) cheese piled on top. Four way - add raw onions. Five way - add kidney beans.
Or Coneys. Vienna sausage on a hot dog bun with chili on top. Add raw onions and/or cheese. Also a bowl of plain or a bowl of chili bean, with or without onions and cheese. That's the whole menu. Its really popular after a long night of beer drinking.
A couple other copy cats in town. Gold Star and Empress. Not bad, but not the big dog in town.
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.
