We normally travel using Streets and Trips so we don't need anything as elaborate as Rand McNally's RV GPS or the High end Magellan for RV's.

We would like one that shows lane preference, has FREE map updates, and you can enter Longitudes and Latitudes. We would use it supplement Streets and Trips and also be able to move it to the truck for when we travel just in the truck.

I get so confused when going to the Web sites for GPS's I thought I would post here and get some REAL WORLD users to guide me....

Thanks Lee

We have only used Magellan for years. They are inexpensive and have many campgrounds all ready installed. Magellan is the base format for Good Sams New application.

DD has TomTom and to me it is more difficult to use than my Garmins. Go play with the cheapest TomTom and Garmins at someplace like BestBuy and pick the one you think will work for you best.

Go to Costco for best price..
Get a Garmin with LifeTime maps.
Lane Assist is nice but not a deal breaker..most Garmins have it as standard feature.

I am a big Garmin fan but since I started RV'ing I find locating Parks not so easy. I believe the Magellan may be superior in this regard - so test this feature out when shopping. Magellan does have the AAA books installed which is a plus.

You may consider adding this database too..

We have no problems with TomTom. We added a file to it, with all TT and RPI parks. Amazon sells them for a discount price, "Including Lifetime Upgrade of Maps." We bought a 5.5" and we get new upgrades of the entire US and Canada free about four times a year. We just connect the TomTom to the USB port, and their program pops up to download the Maps.

We bought a Garmin Nuvi for a trip out to Annapolis about two years ago and it took us, to the doorstep, of every place we put in. It was, I think a Nuvi 265 with lifetime maps and we paid around $150 for it. Got it from Amazon and it has worked great.

You might want to find a GPS that is compatible with Streets and Trips. I do all my planning in Streets and Trips and then export it to my portable Garmin GPS that way I have the best of both worlds.
