Came home from work to 3 wet Collies. I have a heated and A/C shed with dog beds and dog door. The house has a dog door that allows them into the kitchen where there are additional dog beds. When I leave for work they stay outside. If I'm home they will stay inside. I wonder if they think they have to guard the place or just get bored inside.

They probably just want to be where ever you are.

My Chesapeake Bay Retriever does the same thing. We have a dog door going out to the backyard, so she has free reign while we are gone (she's well past the age of mischief). If it is raining, she will go outside and hang out there, getting wet.

Dogs like to be outside, get wet, then come in and shake it all over you, especially if you worked hard to stay dry coming in. It's in the job description. They were probably disappointed you weren't home, but were willing to wait. Long-haired dogs, like Collies and Shepherds, are especially adept at this, soaking up lots of water before coming in. It's the canine equivalent of the Super Soaker...

Maybe it's too warm for them inside or they like seeing what's going on outside. Could be the guard dog thing like you mentioned. But since they'd rather be with you they come in when you're home.

Yup, waiting for you.

Once years ago we had two German Shepherds. Went for a walk in heavy snow to help a neighbor. Came home a different way and went in front door, no dogs. Looked out window into run, no dogs. Starting to get WORRIED here!!!!! Went out thru garage and called. Two big snowpiles erupted in dogs, hi dad. Idiots were buried, and quite happy. Yes they had a dog door into house from run. If it was me, I'd have curled up on a bed, but what do I know, LOL.
