We had to stay there last summer because no campgrounds or RV parks for at least a hundred miles had openings. It's a real problem. Oil companies have already built many trailer parks and dormitories for their workers and there still are not enough accommodations. A Walmart cashier told us that they're short 200 workers. If you're going either east or west on U.S. 2, detour to some other route at least 100 miles short of Williston. If you google williston oil boom, you'll get a large number of articles.

WalMart's actions sound reasonable to me.

Probably going to open some heated discussions. I think Wal-Mart's original intent was a stop over for people traveling and to spend a few bucks in their stores. Not long term 'camping'. It's been (dis)cussed on many RV forums.

I have no problem with Walmart's actions based on what the story says. Walmart traditionally is only a place to over(1)night while transiting. They have never been a place to camp.

I have been quite thankful for that.

From the Article: ...the camping was causing safety, noise, litter and property problems...

This is what happens when people abuse a privilege.

As mentioned earlier, the offer made by Sam Walton all those many years ago was intended to be a convenience for a VERY short stay... overnight or two at the most, NOT a destination.

When the store's bottom line started to suffer as result of the large number of rigs in the parking lot and the "issues" associated with those rigs and the people occupying them then the store had to do something about it.

The store is there to sell "stuff" and make a profit NOT to provide free accommodations for longer-term oil workers.

The municipality needs to step up to the plate and work with or "entice" the oil companies to provide somewhere for all these people to park their rigs that would provide the most basic services... Water, Sewer and electricity in order to ensure a relatively healthy "Work Camp".

24 hours is more than reasonable for an "overnight" stop. I agree, Walmart is being more than reasonable and well within their rights.

A couple of years ago, we stopped at the WalMart in Gallup, NM for some last minute Christmas shopping and a few hours of sleep. The next morning was 40+ mph winds and about 6 inches of snow. We stayed the next day and night until the roads were cleared.

We felt horrible for staying 2 nights, even with the storm hitting. I could not imagine abusing their generous offer and using them as a campground.

I agree with everything said. I read on another post, no idea how true it was, that there were something like 140 rigs parked in that store.

I have never camped or boondocked at WalMart but I have pulled into their parking lot after midnight many times and slept for 6 or 7 hours before moving on. I appreciate WM for allowing me to do this but an extended stay should not be tolerated by WM. The city or the oil companies should step up and at least provide a gravel lot somewhere for them to park, maybe even a honey wagon to help out.
