And I always question the "advice" from someone who makes a statement of fact, when it's really just HIS opinion.

You gotta be careful on this one.

Sometimes an "opinion" may only sound that way. Perhaps many years of experience mixed in with a good sprinkling of common sense, education, and supporting facts can lead to a rock solid opinion that one should take to heart ... especially so if the opinion makes intuitive sense. Some folks don't have the resources or time to always prove beforehand in the laboratory what they say.

I've always found that if someone says something that doesn't seem intuitively to be the case ... in all likelihood it indeed isn't the case. Intuition came be very powerful ... for both men and women.

I like seeing what people's responses are. Usually there is wisdom/knowledge to be gained from somewhere, so this is one reason why I try to ask for input on questions that are not easily searched, and sometimes opinions on specific stuff.

For example, the suggestion when I had the issue a month ago about the dump tank was easily and elegantly solved with a macerator pump. Sure beats trying to coax poop through a slinky to the tank, trying to bury the tank, or raise the RV to unsafe heights.

Product recommendations tend to be on target too. A 1.7 ampere Battery MINDer has kept the OEM jar on my TT in good enough condition to fire up the furnace if the temperature got near freezing. The Camco inline water hose filters do significantly help with water taste/odor. An Extend-A-Stay propane hose is crucial if one has larger propane bottles, and isn't in an area where refills are easy to come by. Where I am in Central TX, it is a PITA to get propane bottles/tanks filled, but easy to get the 20 pounders exchanged.

Of course there is one lesson that I wish I knew when I bought my pickup... Buy a one-ton. There are so many more options available than what can be done with a half ton, such as larger fifth wheels, truck campers, better safety margins and performance when towing in the mountains, ability to use a snow plow, etc.

I make my own discisions but advice from others here gives my a place to start to begin my research. If you go to any product reviews you will see everything from hate it to love it, so how do you really know unless you tried it yourself. Dont know if I make any since? I really do consider all you here professionals though....

For several years my main source of RV education was several RV forums, including this one. After awhile you get to "know" many of the people who answer the questions. You figure out who is full of b.s. and who is usually right on and who may not know but is a good idea person and who actually tries out his own suggestions, etc.

I own a number of good books on the subject but without these forums I wouldn't understand what I've read, and I wouldn't have any place to go when I had a question about something I'd read.

Now that I finally have a motorhome, I can't imagine having gotten here without the forums. I take quite a lot of the advice I get here, and Thank You Very Much!

After reading for many years, the advice I received on the items below was spot on. These were items that came up so often, and the majority always seemed to be saying the same thing.

when chosing a generator...a honda or yamaha. bought Honda and love it
weight distribution.....equalizer.....excellent system, worked properly
surge protector....EMS....again, great system, does what it advertises
towing heavy...get a diesel preferably 1 ton....safe and relaxing towing for me
fridge wont light....purge air from lines on cooktop....bingo, works every time
battery maintainer....battery tender...relatively inexpensive and does the job
battery cutoff switch..install one and forget about phantom loads between trips

sure theres lots of other little things to take or leave, depending on cost, type of camping etc but for the most part folks on here are very passionate about what they do and hate to see others make the mistakes they have already made.

Lots of good results come from someone else's bad experience, and the folks on here are pretty good about reporting what NOT to do or buy. I have a small cabinet full of stuff I thought I needed, but never used. A result of not knowing how I would wind up using the MH. But it would have been a large cabinet if not for advice received here. Anybody want to buy a roof mounted, in-motion satellite dish from a guy that stays at FHU CGs with cable?

I am with "SKIPNCHAR". I do wish some of the people that try various hints, suggestions, advice, ideas would come back and share their experience. We don't all have the problem at the same time, but we may eventually. Does this make any sense?

I rv.net regularly and have taken much advice from the forums. I am not new to camping but am new to having a fifth wheel and have learned a lot here!

That said all offered advice has to be filtered by common sense....

There is a lot of experience and expertize out here and you just need to ask the right questions. Chances are that others have had the same issue. Someone always has a better mouse trap, and its great to see all the options and pick the one that best meets your needs. When you use this source, you usally get some answers that make more sense then others and you want to say "Why didn't I think of that". Its great

When I need advice I come here and read and read. There are those who you ignore and those you look for. It don't take long to learn those you can trust. I have done a lot of mods to my 5er and most of them are thanks to the people here.
