Can you identify this bird, he looks like a hawk of some kind but his all brown head and white underside doesn't match anything in my book.

It looks like a kestrel. They are the smallest of the hawk family and will hover above the ground looking for prey. Often called the sparrow hawk that is common in England. We have one around the farm. Very nice looking bird.

either a broad winged or may be a sharp shinned. We have one here too, but I can never get a good view. Let us know if you find a more definative answer.

The white underside with the pattern shown is typical of a redtailed hawk and there are many color variants of this hawk, particularly in the West.
The tail is not long enough for a kestrel, sharpshinned, or Coopers hawk.
All in all, I think it is a red tailed hawk.

looks like a red-tail to me as well. we had a nesting pair in a huge tree behind our house for years. one morning i was walking out to my car ('88 jeep grand wagoneer) and one of them was perched on the roof rack! i turned around and took another car to work. when i got home, i was pleased to see that he had not flown away with the jeep. good sized bird!

Put me on the red-tailed hawk bandwagon. They are the most common of hawks and colors vary from region to region. Easiest way to tell is to look at the underside of their tail feathers as they fly to see if there's reddish band across them.

I pulled the Broad-Winged Hawk up on the internet and the pictures match pretty good. Yes it is a Broad-Winged Hawk.
Thanks everyone, my book didn't show a good picture but pictures on the net showed really good. I did see him in a field out in the country side by Artesia Wells, Tx.
