When we were in that area, we stayed at Windfall State Recreation area near Gibbon which is just a little east of Kearney.
It was nearly empty, nice level sites, several small lakes for fishing and very inexpensive. If I remember correctly, it was the honor system and we were there in June as well.

We overnighted at Cabela's. Dry camping but they had water and dump station there for free use.

Stayed at Ft Kearney SP a few years ago. If you don't have a really big rig, it could be a good choice, but remember you would need to pay an entrance fee (this applies to all NE SPs) in addition to the camping fee. If you're staying several nights, and like the SP atmosphere over private CGs, it would probably be worth it; not so much for just one night, IMO. We were interested in the state historic park, a few miles away, so it was a good choice for us. The CG is accessed by a nice country road, but you can hear the interstate from many of the sites. Fairly well-spaced sites; bathhouses nothing to write home about but ok.

Another option would be at Minden, Ne at Pioneer Village. There is a really cool museum and the campsites were clean and not crowded. I think it is about 12 miles from Kearney.

Haha, very well could be! I had a heck of a time reading that small print on the map when I was looking up the name of the park! Thanks for setting the record straight.
