DW and I are strongly considering a MH (as in we almost bought one this past weekend). We currently have the 5th wheel in my sig. The model we like is the 2012 Thor Hurricane 31J. It's a Ford chassis with 208" wheelbase, 33 foot length, 18,000 lb GVWR. Other models we considered were three Winnebago's, Adventurer, Sightseer, and Vista (DW liked the Sightseer the most out of those), and the Monaco Monarch (seen some nice used one's). We're leaning towards the Hurricane because of the large rear storage area, drop down bunk over the cab area, straight path from front to rear of the coach with the slide in, and room for my large batteries. We plan to tow a two horse trailer with it on occasion. Does anyone have this particular model or any Hurricane? What do you tow with it? All comments are welcome outside of the questions as long as it's not too OT. Thanks much.

Most "gassers" have limited towing capacity. 4000# or 5000#. All depends on the actual weight, GCWR, and what the hitch capacity is. Do some additional research. Get the weights, and ratings right from the rig's ratings stickers. Do this before making a decision.

The Hurricane does have 5000 lb tow rating. The trailer will be about 500 lbs under that with two horses. It'll be close if anything.

My Son just sold his 34 ft 5th w and bought a DP 38ft turbo Cummins with the allison trans. Coming back from Redding Ca to Sac it would not go over 65 miles
an hour. He is already missing his 5th w. But yours will be new, his is used
but like new.

We drove a '99 hurricane 29D for several years and loved it! Since then we have looded at a number of later, and sometimes larger, Hurricane models. We have also visited the factory in Elkhart, and had some minor service done. We have also talked to and visited with a number of other Hurricane owners.
We would strongly recommend just about all the Hurricane models, and many times you can buy them at a lot less than the quoted or factory price. They are far from the most expensive or fancy motor homes, but do a great job and are well designed for use. Good rigs for a great price.

When you say it has a 5K towing rating are you talking about the hitch or the motorhome? While it may have a class III hitch with a 5k rating that may not be what is left in the GCWR. One other one to be careful of you stated it had lots of rear storage, you need to weigh it loaded up like you were going on a trip. There is a strong possibility you will only 3-4K of capacity left.

BTW I have a 228" wheelbase 22K Ford chassis in my 06 and only have 4K of capacity left to tow with.

Thanks Tahiti. I do plan on weighing the coach when we get it loaded up. Fortunately for us, we travel light so I hope that will give us enough capacity for the trailer.

We wanted to start out with a entry level unit and chose the Winnebago Vista 35F bath and a half. It tows our Jeep liberty well and gets between 6.3 and 6.9 mpg so far towing from Ohio to Florida. We have only one problem that will require a dealer trip and it is a small tear in one of the slide toppers other than that a leak in the cab air hose fixed at a Ford dealership and everything else works fine. Would recommend it to anyone, a lot of coach for the money and much easier to drive than I thought.

We have a 2008 Hurricane 34S. We tow our Chevy HHR behind it. We love the coach and have had no problems with it.
