The breeder called me last night. He said 7 weeks is OK. None of the puppies are nursing anymore. They are on puppy food. So we are going to get her today. Yes it is very exciting. We are gathering things to bring her home in our car. We have three crates. Two that we can carry in the car and a very large one(it was for our lab) that we can use in the house. We have a harness that can be attached to a seat belt but my wife will probably hold her on her lap. Now all we have to do is wait for the bank to open.

My dog Rocky was my first puppy. I'd always gotten older dogs as strays or out of abusive situations. Needless to say I was a experience of a life time. I wasn't for sure we'd make it through the puppy stage. He's now the most loving lil guy. Best of luck with your new pup, hang in there it's well worth it.

Too large a crate can confuse the pup, as it leaves room to potty in one end and sleep in the other. So for a while you might want to bring in one of the smaller ones, or block off part of the bigger one.

We got our latest at 1 week old. He was in the neighbor's litter of Chiuahua/Shih Tzu mix. He was the runt and was dying because he couldn't compete for mother's milk with his ltter mates. Our neighbors have no experience with dogs and were afraid to touch any of the puppies, so he was in the corner getting cold. My wife went over to see the puppies and rescued him. We hand fed him until he was old enough to start eating solid food, and our 3 other dogs provided the socialization. He is now a healthy, happy, well-mannered (as much as a puppy can be, anyways) 7 month old.

We got our girl below at 6 weeks.

The only bad part was that during weeks 6-8, litter-mates teach that it is not acceptable to bite everybody. Our hands and forearms took the place of the litter-mates.

She is 14 now.

Good luck with your new Sheltie pup. We are on our third one. They are beautiful dogs. You will be amazed at how smart they are and how quickly they learn things.
