We are looking at a puppy. It's been over a year since we lost our 15 year companion. She was a toy poodle. The puppy we want is a sheltie. She was born December 19 2011. They say she will be able to leave her mother February 13 2012. It would work out better for us if we went and got her 2/12/12. Would one day cause any problems for the new puppy?

Not a vet or expert here...just a long time dog owner.
We picked up one of our Britts 3 days earlier than the "release/ready" date.
She is a strong, health and happy girl 2 years later...

Given the massive amount of love, attention and affection you will lavish upon the lucky pup from the first moment you get her I don't see a problem.

Certain jurisdictions have laws regarding when a pup is allowed to leave its birth mother.

Might be the legal issue . . . if I calculated right, the pup would just be eight weeks old on 2/13.

I am no way knowledgeable in this area but common sense would tell me that the puppy isn't going to know the time difference and in a situation about the welfare of an animal who cares about "the law"..The puppy rules.. IMO..

Often times eight weeks old is fine but there are some breeds of pups &/or individual pups that do better if they are not taken from the litter and mom until 10 or even 12 weeks. This is mostly for socialization and learning to interact within a pack, in other words, getting valuable lessons in doggy manners.

If the breeder is reputable and has said the pups will be ready to leave their first pack at 8 weeks I guess one day won't make a difference, unless there are legalities involved, ask the breeder. As far as if it really is too soon for this particular pup, time will tell.

Good luck with your new puppy, it's an exciting time!

Dogs can't tell the date and wouldn't care but the person you're buying from MIGHT. I'd ask that person if they'll allow it and if not what the reason might be.

Sorry for the loss of your old friend. Since you've been out of the puppy game for 15 years, let me give you a gentle reminder: puppies are a royal pain in your ah, assets. They will inconvenience you on an hourly basis, regardless of what day you bring him home.

Depending on who you listen to, the "acceptable" age to take a puppy away from its litter ranges from 7-12 weeks.
If you are dealing with a reputable breeder, he/she may be bound by the code of ethics for the parent club to which they may belong. For example, the PWCCA (Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America) code does not permit breeders to place puppies younger than 10 weeks, and many believe that it should be at 12 weeks.

At 7 weeks, the puppy is learning how to be a dog. These lessons come from the mother and the littermates. Between 7-11 weeks the puppy learns how to interact with humans. This also happens to overlap the fear-imprint stage, where seemingly trivial happenings can cause emotional problems for the rest of the dog's life.

The dog that is the most devoted to me, most strongly bonded to me, came to live with us when he was 9 months old. It most certainly did not affect his bonding to me. Anyone who has ever adopted an adult dog can tell you that, too.
