We purchased a Kindle Fire, but haven't registered it yet. I hope the 400 books I have on the Kindle 3 don't automatically go to our K Fire just because it's the same account.
Is there a way to keep all those books from going to the K Fire?

You know, I don't keep any of my books on the Kindle. Every one is removed after reading. However, once removed from the Kindle, each book appears in the archive thereafter, and if I want to reread one, all I have to do is to turn on the wifi and retrieve it from the server. (This applies to purchased books, not ebooks borrowed from the library, where I have to go through the borrowing process again.)

By the way, one time I managed to let the battery go completely dead, and I had to do a reboot. No big problem really, but even more crucial is this: The machine retrieved the whole of the archive from the server after the reboot. Nice!

My wife and I each have a kindle. She has the new kindle with keyboard and I have the fire. Her kindle is registered in her name and mine is in my name. I don't get her books and she doesn't get mine.

If you can't fix it with a hammer you have an electrical problem.

I have both and the original books will remain on the "cloud" until you download any you want to your device (KFire) in your case. My "cloud" contains several hundred books but I only keep about 8 or 10 of the unread ones on my Kindle or KFire. Then after reading them, I send them back to the cloud for storage. Works great. Just remember you have to have Wifi service to be able to move the books around from the cloud to a device.
Since I bought my KFire, my Kindle just sits, getting very little use except when I am outside. Then the Kindle is much easier to read. I have had my KFire for about 2 months now and have read 18 books on it so far. So nice to be able to check emails, play a few games, etc. Both devices still serve a useful purpose for me.

When you do activate your KFire, enter your acct # with Amazon and punch in "books" the first page up will have at the top of the page, one box with "device in it" and one will say "cloud" Your device will be empty till you go to "cloud" and download any books you want to your device.

Yep, I have both....registered mine, went on there and looked for my books, and couldn't find my books. Hit the cloud button and they ALL showed up. All 300 or so of them. IF you want to re-read something or haven't gotten to read them yet, then you will need to go to the cloud and hit the arrow button and it will then put it on your FIRE.

NOTE: You have to have wifi in order to download anything, even from the CLOUD.

In order to read mine easier outside and during the night when DH is driving, I will change the background color to black and the type will be white. Works for me with not as much glare.

I'm not sure I'd call what Amazon does a "cloud" per se, though they do offer data storage on their servers, including (of course) for your books. And, yes, you do need some kind of Internet connection to move books from an Amazon server to your Kindle, if that's what you're asking. (It's also very easy to download books to some other device, then tether via USB to your Kindle and move them there -- and vice versa.)

Here's more on Cloud computing from Wikipedia:

Quote:

Cloud computing is the delivery of computing as a service rather than a product, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices as a metered service over a network (typically the Internet).

Computing clouds provide computation, software, data access, and storage resources without requiring cloud users to know the location and other details of the computing infrastructure.

End users access cloud based applications through a web browser or a light weight desktop or mobile app while the business software and data are stored on servers at a remote location. Cloud application providers strive to give the same or better service and performance as if the software programs were installed locally on end-user computers.

444, Yes you do need a wireless connection to move books from the storage cloud at Amazon to your device. When you buy a book from Amazon, for example, it is sent to the storage cloud for safe keeping. To get it to your device, Kindle or KFire, you then download a copy of the book to your device. The copy on the cloud remains there. When you finish the book and no longer want it on your device, you delete/send it back, but the copy remains on the cloud at all times.

When I know I am going to be gone for several months in the summer and may be out of wireless range, I will download to my Kindle perhaps up to 20 or more of my books from the storage cloud before I leave home. This way I won't have to have access to wireless to read those books. I will do the same thing this summer with my KFire device. When I return home or have a good fast wireless access location, I will remove the ones I no longer want on my device, and add any to it I want. I do most of my book buying before the trips and may leave most or all on my storage cloud till I want to bring them to my device. At any given time I may have 50 or 60 unread books resting on Amazon's storage cloud, some are free ones, some are 99 cent ones and some are whatever they costs me.

What is kind of interesting is the way that library copies of Kindle books are handled. You check them out eletroncially via a library website, but download them from Amazon.

By the way, if you're a voracious reader, you'll want to learn how to return ebooks to libraries so that you don't bump up against the max limit of checked-out ebooks. For Kindle ebooks, you return the ebook to the library not from the library site, but from Amazon.
