Hello,

I have a bone stock 08 2500hd Chevy Silverado LTZ diesel crew cab 4x4 that seems to have lost fuel economy in a bad way. Around town I used to get around 300 to 320 miles before the fuel light would come on. Now, all of a sudden it has dropped to 230 or so when the fuel light comes on. Any ideas? It is running the same as before as far as I can tell. I can't figure it out. It has been like this for about a month and a half without any change. It started right after I got the oil changed and the mechanic claims he didn't put a computer to it at all.

Sounds like an injector issue.

First thing you need to check is the air filter.

Next thing to pull is the codes.

Next thing you need to check is smell and look at the oil to see if it's "fuelly."

Those would be the top 3 on my list.(there are others)

I purchased the truck this time last year and the mileage was way better when I first got it so I don't think it could just be winter fuel issues. I thought it could be a bad tank of fuel at first but I have run through at least six or seven tanks with no change yet. I think I will take it to the dealership and have them take a look. Hopefully they find something and it doesn't cost a fortune. Maybe I will be lucky and it will be a warranty issue.

Friend told me his motor home with a Cummins had a turbo go bad and his mileage dropped way off. Noticed that it struggled somewhat going uphill. Has about 45,000 miles on it.

Hi, I know this may sound like a long shot, but I have seen this before. You said it happened right after an oil change. Check the oil level. If too much oil was installed, it will interfere with the crank shaft rotation.

Change the oil again, take a 45 minute trip on the freeway, top off fuel tank. That gets any oil issues out of the way, and if a regen cycle is needed, gets it out of the way also.
You know diesels get single digits mpg's when warming up (when it is really cold out) in town, and then 12-15 is pretty good.
