We have driven US-54 from Wichita to Tucumcari, NM several times in the past five years. From Tucumcari, you could take I-40 to Flagstaff or stay on US-54 to Carrizozo, NM and take US-60 West to Show Low, AZ and then AZ-77 North to Holbrook and I-40. US-60 does climb from Socorro, NM to Show Low but I do not think the grades are much if any worse than those on I-40.
Unless you want to go to Capulin Volcano and Raton, You can stay on US-412 at Clayton, NM; go North on I-25 a couple of exits to NM-58 and pickup US-64 at Cimarron. US-64 has a pretty good climb from Cimarron to Eagles Nest and more twists and turns on to Taos and then to Chama. US-64 is a beautiful scenic drive through Northern NM, but it does have some grades at 6-8%. We've done it a couple of times and the road surface was good. There is a campground at Cimarron Canyon State Park and several at Eagles Nest, Taos and Chama.
In May you could still run into some periods of bad weather at the higher passes the farther North you go so plan on watching the weather.
