I use the Verizon MiFi 2200 3G. I usually put it high in the front window. $50.00 mo. for 5GB. Also has the capability of running 5 different devices at once. It works very well most of the time.

I've found that the "external antenna" option on mobile devices is unfortunately becoming very rare. We only use mobile devices with this port so that they can also be of maximum usability on RV trips. We don't like to be limited when RV drycamping from both a safety-communication viewpoint and from an Internet-access route planning viewpoint.

Yes, the HTC Thunderbolt has the ability to have an external antenna plugged in to it. It's a 4GLTE Smartphone that can also be a 8 device Mobile Hotspot as well as a great many other things.
Verizon has or had it for $99 on their website for a 2 year contract renewal.
The catch is, you have to buy a dataplan for the phone, $30 for 2 gb, and then another $30 for the mobile hotspot which has its own data.
I'm one of the lucky folks that has the unlimited data package from getting the mobile hotspot option.
Bill is around $120 a month for my 400 minutes + unlimited data.

Also fair warning on T-Mobile "unlimited". After 2 gigs, they drastically throttle your speed to near uselessness.

X2 on Virgin Mobile to go. We have used it for 2 years, mostly in CA but went all the way east to FL and all the way north to Niagra Falls last summer, it worked well in all but a couple of places. No contract and when your 30 days of minutes is up no big deal if you don't sign up for a week. It uses Sprint lines.

My Verizon phone has unlimited internet. I use and app called PDAnet to connect my laptop to my phone and have at it.....

Be aware of the "unlimited" data plans...seems they are not so unlimited anymore: IT World article. The article talks mostly about AT&T, but the others could do the same, their contacts are all worded alike.

We have Verizon mi-fi purchased this past June. There is no 4g service here, at this time. Only 3G. So far, I have had a lot of problems (working through Verizon to solve them). I would characterize Verizon's mi-fi as dial up speed at broadband prices.
It took all day to download and upgrade my Garmin maps. I'll have to wait and see about the 4G service if and when it becomes available.
I am glad that others are not having the issues I have been experiencing.
Choose your carrier carefully.

What signal strength are you getting? I find that the weaker the signal, the slower you go. I'm planning to invest in an exterior powered Cellphone antenna assembly to boost my signal range to keep my speed up when out on the fringes.
Also, the only decent 3G MiFi unit Verizon had was the Novatel Mifi 2200, most of their newer units were problematic at best.
