I have two 98 vintage chevy trucks. The K1500 with the 5.7L vortec was bought new and the K3500 with the 454 was bought a little over four years ago. No rust issues on either one. I've had intake manifold gasket issues on the 350. It's on its fourth one in a 121,000 miles. No real issues on the K3500 since I've had it. Just maintainence stuff.
I don't know if I would dump a bunch of money on the paint and rust issues but it would make for a good towing truck unless you are towing real heavy.

I've heard Fel Pro gaskets are better than the GM ones. Had installed on a '96 Oldsmobile after two sets of GM intake gaskets on the 60 degree V6. Then went with the Fel Pro. However unloaded the Olds about 5 months later so I don't know how well the Fel Pro held up.

I always use Fel-Pro replacements on my GMs, and have never had an issue.

x2 on the intake gaskets. Keep up on maintenance (like changing antifreeze) and it should work well.

Fel-Pro's were used on the second replacement but were just like the originals so they did not last. On the last replacement, I used revised ones from GM that had the metal inserts around the bolt holes. So far I think this repair is holding since I'm not losing any coolant from the overflow tank.
GM again revised the gasket set after the version I currently have and this set is made of metal instead of plastic.
I fully expect that mine will leak again since I don't have the latest version of gaskets installed.
I have examined the Fel-Pro version of the GM version that is currently installed in my truck and they looked identical except for the color of the rubber gasket part.
