Oh I really like this! All my dogs have labored under multiple names. Most of the time I just called them Dog. My Canine Soulmate's name was Shadow. However, I called him Dog, Shad, Shadrack, Moon Shadow (after the song), Nut Job, Idiot, Fool, Diplodocus (because a Dip had two brains and it seemed Shadow had a head brain and a tail brain).

He seemed to understand I was always speaking to him so I imagine it's the tone of voice more than the name.

I've got a cat I call Dog. I also call him Forrest (after Forrest Gump). He's also got about a dozen other names in addition to his real name.

So..whatever you name them... you can always add more.

Tipper - because she had four white tips on her legs and one more on her tail.
PoLar - because when she was a pup she looked just like a baby polar bear.
Ginger - because when she was a pup her beagle coloring was that of a ginger root.
Pasha - when we rescued her she already had that name and responded to it.

My granda got a new puppy. He called it 'puppy'. When I asked what he was going to name it he replied "Not sure....it hasn't shown what a good name would be yet....so for now it's puppy"

15 yrs. later it was still 'puppy'
