i understand the concept behind the pullrite trailer hitch. however, i don't understand what keeps it centered under braking or backing up. does it have springs to center it?

Think of it as an upside down 5th wheel hitch. The pivot point is near the back axle so the TT naturally follows the TV. The hitch ball is not a pivot point at all. It is locked in place.

I had one with my first TT and a Hensley on the 2nd. I'd say the PR was ever so slightly better. I switched to the Hensley only because of the PR install hassle.

Take a look at the photos below... Notice that the spring bars are locked firmly into the hitch head via pockets in the head and at the far end of the spring bars, there are square head set screws which put the bars under tension laterally... The combination of these two lock the trailer coupler to the ball and force it to pivot at the king pin just aft of the differential...

Disregard the comment on the photo regarding shims - that was another Pullrite topic of days gone by...

BTW, I have towed with the Pullrite, my current Hensley, and several different types of standard w/d hitches, and I personally consider the Pullrite hitch to most stable and overall best hitch of any hitch made today...
