And the answer is subjective.

Suggestion: Find someone with HD DTV and a similar TV and have them unhide the SD channels (they're usually hidden) in the settings. Then switch back and forth on the same program and compare. Clearly you need a program that is being sent in HD for this comparison.

I have HD at home, Love it...I have SD in the 5er Vu-Cube1000.

I used to camp in a tent, with no heat, bathroom, etc................But, I was much younger then.

'We choose what is important" .

You could get a "King Dome", fully auto HD, but at what cost, is it worth it TO YOU ???

That is the question you must answer.

Without going through each of the previous posts to note the inaccuracies, here's a summary of some of the salient points to consider:

--What's called "high def" TV comes in several resolutions: 720p, 1080i, 1080p. The bigger the number, the better the resolution, "p" is better than "i"
--Most TV's of 32" or smaller are only capable of displaying TV at 720p since your eye won't be able to tell the difference between than and 1080 on the small screen
--HD signals are broadcast in 16:9 format compared to the 4:3 format of SD. Therefore, watching SD TV on an HD set will mean seeing lots of black borders.
--SD TV is more accurately referred to as 480i; the ratio 720/480 is the increase in resolution so 720p HD has more than 1.5x the resolution of standard definition TV. This might not matter to you, but claiming it doesn't exist isn't realistic either.

If all you watch is the news, SD is probably fine. If you like sports or movies, HD is hard to give up once you've had it. Also, HDTV has the capability of 5.1 digital audio, if that matters to you.

Once you've seen HD with 5.1 sound, there's no going back.

First let me say that I am amazed at the quality of HD digital broadcast channels I'm able to get thru my Batwing antenna. I did spring for the $30 addon antenna. BUT, you have to be near a large city with lots of channels broadcasted over the air for this to work...then who wants to be near a big city in your RV anyway???

One thing to recognize is what's required to actually get HD from Dish Network (or anyone else) to a HDTV in a motorhome???

1) you must be able to pickup Sat 129 (Dish). This usually takes a Sat Dish with 3 cones (LNBs) or be willing to spend lots of time with a portable dish aiming for 129.
2) you must have a HD capable Sat Receiver AND pay any extra Dish Network charges for access.
3) YOU MUST RUN A HDMI OR COMPONENT CABLE FROM THE DISH RECIEVER TO YOU TV...the nice small black round cable that is preinstalled in your RV will NOT carry a HD signal.
4) you must have a HDTV...

I learned from experience. A year ago we purchased an 07 Mountain Aire. She's beautiful! So I spent $1500 upgrading the Sat antenna to the Motosat HD....great!

Then I brought a reciever from our house that wasn't HD Capable.

Then I finally remembered on the next trip to bring the correct HD reciever, GREAT! Still no HD. I got the HD channels, just not the HD quality.

So I broke down and purchased a 50 foot HDMI. Cost me $80! I needed the 50 foot cable as my stereo cabinet is in the middle of the MH.

I then spent two days trying to fish this damned cable thru the ceiling. It just wasn't going to happen. And I'm a pretty creative guy.

I finally realized that by removing the Crown Molding on the driver side of the MH that I could get the HDMI to the front TV. A 40" Sony LED 3D beauty that I installed 6 months ago.

By the time I ran this cable across the MH, forward to the windshield and across to the TV I had about 3 extra feet of cable left!!!

I will say the results were awesome. The cable hid nicely behind the Crown molding, except for a small imperfection which I can repair when I get home, it's perfect.

Moral of the story is you need to have everything correct to actually get HDTV..........applause...........Thank you!

If you're going to actually run wire, do NOT run component wire. Instead run HDMI or opt for wireless HDMI.

Or, just run two coax lines from your rooftop Travler (or portable) dish -- one to each receiver. I prefer the two coax solution.

I've had Dish Network for well over a decade now. Started with purchasing my own equipment and not leasing equipment. Switched to HD when it became free. Have been very happy with it. Have it for both the stick house and the tailgater for the motorhome. Could I live without HD? I have not tried it, but I imagine I could if I had to. I've done a lot of things when I had to!

We fulltime and watch a lot of TV. We don't have HD and don't miss it at all. Our DirectTV picture is very very good and we seldom even go to any local channels by antenna to watch a show that is HD.
