We'll be going to Colorado from Las Vegas,NV in April and hope to avoid I-40. (Just looking a different road that is scenic) I would like to go to Grand Junction and take Hwy 50 down to Montrose and then east to Canon City. Is this a good, safe, road pulling a 32' 5th wheel? Thank you for any help or other recommendations.

Absolutely! It is an excellent road and driven daily by big rigs as well as conventional cars. Enjoy!

In April there might be snow. We have encountered snow on that route in May.

It is a great road but you will cross over a couple of mountain passes. Your PSD will not have any trouble with either one. I have taken that road several times in 2 different DP Motorhomes pulling a toad. One was a Cummins 275hp and one was a Cummins 330hp. No problems with either, just a little slow up the mountain.

good road all the way, but do check the weather forecast and highway conditions for the day you plan to use it.

You can also view Colorado Webcams here. Includes Montrose, Gunnison and Monarch Pass cams. So at least you could see what the road conditions are like.

Thanks for all the great information, guess I should have also asked about RV parks, but guess I can look all that up. But if you have a favorite RV park, please let me know. Thanks again.

We did it Westbound in 08 and Eastbound in 09 with a 30' Outback behind an 04 Dodge CTD. No problems.

Comming off of Monarch Eastbound is a LOOOOONG downgrade. Keep the speed under control and stay off of the brakes. Plenty of places to pull pver and take a short rest stop,

In Montrose we stay at the Cedar Creek RV park. Nice peeps run it. From Vegas we go to Salina UT and stay at the Butch Cassidy RV park. If you overnight there be sure to hit Mom's cafe for the Chicken Pot pie dinner Mmmmmmmmmm!!
