Hi Slate –

I took the blind spot test. A real eye opener. Thanks for posting.

Absolutely correct. I have driven up on many unsuspecting animals while trail biking. Foxes, bunnies, deer, bear, turkeys, etc. My bikes were mostly 4 strokes with competition pipes. Certainly not quiet. But wildlife couldn't hear me coming, until I was right on their tail.

I can tell you that a fox can run 22 MPH on a trail. And unlike a deer, a fox is not smart enough to turn off the trail. And he will prefer to follow the route of less obstruction. A deer will take about two or three hops and ASAP turn off the trail into deep cover. As will a bear. Although a little slower. If a bear doesn't jump off the trail, you better.

I used to have a fast little motorcycle (Yamaha RD350) and loved to ride - except in bad weather.

I became an EMT, got rid of the motorcycle.

Except to the lawyers, it absolutely does not matter who is at fault in an accident, so there is no point in blaming any class of drivers (no matter how much they may deserve it).

If you are in an accident, your injuries are the result of the physics of the situation, especially the momentum (mass times velocity). Car vs. motorcycle, motorcyclist takes the brunt of the damage, semi vs. car, car driver takes the brunt of the damage, motorcycle vs. bridge abutment - I hope to never see that again.

Some car occupants fare better in some accidents because of safety equipment, but there aren't air bags, seat belts, crush zones, etc. in motorcycles. RVs do have seat belts, but not much else (although I think it is better to be in an RV than a motorcycle in most accidents).

I loved to ride. But stopped because I love to walk and live more.
Still enjoy my bicycle. Always ride it as though drivers cannot see me.

In another post, in another forum, Someone spoke of seeing not one but TWO class A motor homes coming down the road towards him with the driver's side slides out.

Now, part of my "Scan" when I pull out of a parking spot is both rear view mirrors,, They do not work well with the slides out,, and I scan them often when traveling.

That said.. What is being called "Motion induced blindness" has been known for years and is called "highway Hypnosis" You basically zone out and switch to 'Auto Pilot' alas, auto-pilot does not see motorcycles.. or in some cases Semi trucks.

Still.. better than homo non-sapius erectus, (Ask if you want to hear that joke/explanation)

It's well known that if you expect to see something, you may think you see it even if it's not there -- or if you don't expect to see something, you may not see it even though it is there (like a motorcycle pulling out to pass a truck). Also less well known is that what you hear can be altered by what you see. etc. etc.

LOL

My son had a squirrel try and jump on him as he rode past the tree it was in when we were dirt biking once. It was funny as heck seeing that thing all stretched out trying his best to nail my son. I am sure the aquirrel was screaming like a ninja...

Another interesting phenomon is that the color of many cars on the road today matches or blends with the road color. We see various subdued silvers, greys, and bronzes which are almost identical to the color of the road surface when viewed from a higher vehicle such as a large truck. I almost pulled out onto several of these vehicles while operating my truck. We drive a yellow Xterra and red car for that reason.

I changed the color of my motorcycle from black to white to improve visibility. The intent was to attempt to engage people's instinctual threat reaction to seeing a police vehicle. While I'm not wishing to be mistaken for police it seems to be that people notice me more. The down side is that drivers will often slow to below the speed limit and crawl along in the mistaken impression that a police vehicle is following. Funny!

Why is it that our subconcious worries more about authority than a transport truck which seems not to be stopping at an intersection?

Anyone else notice the blending with the road effect of so many vehicle colors today?
