Since it appears you are going from WIN XP to WIN 7, you can download the free Microsoft Windows Easy Transfer utility to transfer common files and settings to your new computer.

LOL! Windows 8 does not run on the iPad. It's running on a PC that the iPad is connected to with a simple VNC client. You can make any OS look like it runs on an iPad this way....

Get yourself a USB external hard drive - while this is not a great time to buy computers or hard drives because there is actually a shortage of hard drives due to the floods that took place in Japan last year. Despite this though there are still some bargains out there. If you are a Costco member you can get a 3TB USB drive for $150 or a 2TB drive for $120. Best Buy also will run some good deals. Get the drive now and copy ALL of your documents, data files, and photos to it. When you get your new computer all you need to do is plug this in to a USB port - it installs itself and you copy your files into the new computer where you want them. Then use this drive to back up your new computer's drives on a regular basis so that you will not have to worry about any loss of data in a crash.
The best way to protect your data and computer software is to have two external USB drives- one that you use for back up and the other to use to write all of your data files, documents, and photos to. You then also back these up to a directory on the other drive. Never just have data on a PC hard drive.

To the OP: like others say, use a USB stick or a USB hard drive to move your stuff.
But the main point: you don't have all those pictures, data, and other stuff ONLY on your XP's hard drive, do you? Back that stuff up now. Like today, or tomorrow at the latest. All of us have had stuff lost due to lack of a backup. Learn from our mistakes!

Thx. I thought i watched a vid where it was actually loaded on the ipad, but all the vids are virtual, as you note.
Still, to the OP, i hope he looks closely at the advances in touch screen that win 8 offers for his possible Asus 2410 buy.
I think sufficient options for transferring and backing up his old data have been covered.

Thanks for all the replies. From what I am reading there is no issues transferring files and folders between XP and Windows 7. That was my concern. I do have a external hard drive that I backup info on. As far as Windows 8, the release date seems to be later this year, possibly the last quarter. I don't really want to wait that long to buy something. I assume that you could buy Windows 8 at a later date to install? That ASUS 2410 I am interested in has a 2nd gen I5- 2310 chip. I think that has enough gas in the tank for my general use? Any thoughts on that? Does anyone have any info on the new VIZIO computers coming out? Thanks Wireman
