First off let me say that I am no wizard when it comes to computers. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would say I'm a 3 or possibly 4. At present I have a 7 year old 17 inch HP laptop with a AMD Turion 64 processor and 72 Gigs of memory, so anything will be an upgrade.
As you can see I don't change or upgrade very often. The HP has Windows XP. Right now I am leaning toward buying a 23 inch all in one. Possibly a ASUS 2410, or one of the HP models with the I 5 processor. Want to keep the cost under $1K. May wait till the new Vizio line comes out in the spring to take a look at those. I know the pros and cons of the all in ones but like their compactness and they have all the features that I need.
My question is, what is the best way to transfer some of my documents from the laptop to the new computer. I am talking about folders like MY PICTURES,and other folders and files that I would like on the new computer? Can it be done from XP to Windows 7? I know I will have to download from the internet programs like Open Office.Org, some DVD burning programs, etc. that I use on my laptop. Is it possible to transfer the Favorites list from XP to Windows 7? Any info would be appreciated.

Just get a usb flash drive and load the pics etc onto it. A 4 gig drive I about $6 & a 32 gig is about $20. This way you can transfer and also have them backed up seperate from the computer

Generally to move files from one pc to the next I use a flash/thumb drive which you can buy at WM for very little money.

Best way would be to get a portable case for your old hard drive. Take the hard drive out of the old PC put it in the case then plug the case to into the new PC using the USB cable. The old HD will show up as a temporary device then you simply transfer data files, pics etc to the new PC.
All software has to be re-installed.

Spend less on a computer. Get a stand alone hard drive. Spend a couple hundred on an external hard drive. Place all of your important stuff there. Never keep important stuff on a working drive.

Kind of a good idea, but that stand alone hard drive is just as likely as the "working drive" to take a dump. Moving parts is moving parts. If you absolutely can't lose anything then make a hard copy, i.e. DVD, CD, dead tree.

I would hate to see you settle for Win 7 on that big touch tablet/pc - wait for Win 8 with its android/tablet like 'Metro' touch OS which includes Win 7 as a subsystem for old fashioned keyboard stuff like Word and Excel.
Win 8 also seamlessly uses the new IE 10 full-screen touch browser. It is so portable to any style computer that it will run on an apple ipad.

For $15 I bought THIS, and have used it on several computers.
Fast and easy, and it transfers everything except programs.

Easiest and cheapest would be a 6' crossover Ethernet cable hooked between the two computers and just transfer at will over the network between the two.

If you have a home router,,, YOu can do it effrotlessy by going to the folder, on the OLD computer right click, chose properties, and sharing, check the box and ok it.
Then on the new computer go to MY NETWORK PLACES, follow the path to the old computer (Which must be running) and open the folder, CTRL-A to select, then CTRL-C to copy, now go to the folder on the new computer and CTRL-V or Edit Paste.
Sit back and watch.
Or as suggested a USB thumb drive or a DVD or CD-R works.
The netbook I'm using now caught cold (A virus) which made it unusable by may daughter... her "Computer expert" soon to be husband spent hours getting just one file off it. (he is now her husband by the way) but was unable to restore it to usable condition.
Took me about 5 minutes to make it usable and perhaps 20 to recover all her photos and such and burn them to CD, and much of that was the BURN process.
But of course she had already given me the computer "If you can get it to work, it's yours".
